delta tau delta announces the pledging of three new men this semester namely james h mearns m e oct 47 james wallace bus oct 47 and george seeley e p june 47 the newly elected officers are robert e jones bus feb 46 president john jay shipherd iv bus june 46 vice-president and treasurer earle a compton jr bus feb 47 assistant treasurer and house manager and edward c luckenbach chem e oct 45 corresponding secretary student heads on arcadia are chosen committee appointments released at meeting willard s boothby as president of arcadia submitted his commit tee appointments to the arcadia cabinet at the arcadia meeting february 5 in drown hall these approved committees listed below comprise the student government at lehigh university the student activities commit tee a joint student faculty com mitee is headed by dean congdon and student chairman william g wehner it has jurisdiction over all petitions and activities pertain ing to student affairs the arcadia athletic committee has as its chairman sanford w wilson it takes care of all rallies and decides athletic policies re garding students the arcadia alumni contact committee headed by bill booth by will serve in conjunction with the student chapel committee this semester in regard to services on the campus all contact between alumni and the student body is arranged through this committee the arcadia finance committee with fairfax s landstreet as chairman deals with financial rec ords of arcadia doctor claude g beardslee chairman and robert m treser student chairman head the drown hall house committee which as signs all rooms and space in drown hall the student clubs finance com mittee is presided over by lido a lacocca and dean congdon it serves to control the finances of student clubs on the campus don l shettel is the student chairman of the board of publica tions which makes the decisions on matters concerning all the publi cations at lehigh the student concert-lecture series committee is headed by harry b kern it seeks to provide the most worthwhile entertain ment possible for the students the student chapel committee with e melvin ramberg as chair man is investigating the possibili ties of non-denominational services in the lehigh chapel these had formerly been in existence but were cancelled due to the war lido lacocca will preside over the dance committee which will schedule all dances and decide on their dates and sponsors for the next two semesters robert w mayer is the student representative on the athletic eli gilibity committee this committee decides the eligibility of students to participate in athletics on the basis of scholarship and discipline a recent problem has been that of continued on page 2 asme sponsors engine lecture this thursday march 8 the lehigh group of the asme will meet at 7:30 p m in room 466 of packard laboratory to hear a talk by mr h e linsley of the wright aeronautical corporation on wright-cyclone engines mr linsley will discuss the la test developments in these mach ines and the talk will be illustrat ed by films all freshman mechan ical and industrial engineers are invited to attend this first meeting of the semester and all other en gineers are urged to attend notice . . . the lehigh collegians are sorely in need of musicians especially alto sax men anyone interested in trying out should contact bob annual flag pole day exercises be held this year the petition was granted and the exercises will be held on friday morning may 18 at 11 o'clock athletic certificates for basket ball and wrestling and intramural cups for football softball and bas ketball will be presented at this time the bosey reiter leadership cup and the beta theta pi leadership cup are also to be presented the newly elected president of the five man committee will receive the senior president's cane from the present chairman w e wehner ch e june 45 other cups and medals to be awarded during the flagpole cer emonies include the archibald johnston football cup and medal the phil mcgrath track cup the theodore meyer field cup the mannie lamberton wilbur base ball cup and the lehigh home club wrestling cup and medal .' g i.'s note servicemen thank alma mater for news deep in the steaming jungle is lands of the south pacific or in the oozing mud-bogs of central europe a weary g i relaxes for a few minutes with a lehigh alumni news letter and is carried back to happier days at his alma ma ter this news letter is the only link between lehigh men in ser vice and the activities on the cam pus they were forced to leave today more than 3400 copies of the news letter are sent to lehigh men in all corners of the globe al though when first started in 1942 by messrs shick and herrick it had a circulation of only 300 the letter comes out bi-weekly and contains all the important cam pus news interesting bits sent in by servicemen and pictures of the campus for which requests are constantly being made more than a dozen letters a day come into the alumni office thanking the editors for keeping the spirit of lehigh alive within them one of the most interesting stories to come out of the news letter was about lieutenant j.g charles edwards class of 41 who while flying a mission in the south pacific thought he recognized a familiar voice over the intercom system he identified himself with the password lehigh men make lehigh and learned that he was correct the man at the other end was lieutenant joe riley 41 a classrrfate whom he had not seen since both graduated from lehigh packard site of new lab professor erdoss of the m e department has announced offi cially the opening of the schlieren laboratory in packard lab the primary object of the lab is to make flowing air visible the idea started when profes sor stewart in 1937 on sabbatical leave worked with the westing house company on a method of making air visible upon returning to lehigh he suggested a lab for this purpose and met with favor the navy was interested in air flow at the time for restricted rea sons and offered to pay for the building of the laboratory the m e department decided to take the contract and build the lab in an attic room of packard the investigations were completed in 1943 after which the navy with drew leaving the laboratory un der the supervision of professor erdoss in its one and a half years of ex istence the lab has acquired a number of very complex optical instruments and a twio dimensional and a three dimensional air vent most of this was paid for by the navy and funds are now being provided by outsiders who are working in the lab lehigh is fortunate to be one of the few schools in this country to have a laboratory of this kind it is also a very definite credit to the department to be able to use these modern flow methods 1 in analysis mereersburg wins wrestling meet winners garner 30 points and three titles gilman finishes second and brooklyn poly third lehigh played host to the prep school wrestling tournament last saturday and a fairly large crowd saw the mercersburg academy grap plers take three individual championships place second in two events and take one third place to walk off with the championship the win ners amassed a total of 30 points oilman took second place with 25 points including three winners two seconds and a third brooklyn poly prep placed third with 15 points blair academy shady side and wyoming also competed in the 121 pound class the feature attraction was the final match between spragg of mercersburg and dealaman of blair academy in an exciting bout spragg took a 4-2 decision dealaman took sec ond and mengies of gilman was third dan ray of brooklyn poly had an easy time in the 128 pound di vision winning the final by pin ning crawford of gilman the lat ter took second by virtue of a close 2-0 decision over lear of mercers burg in the 136 pound class the title bout brought together tavares from mercersburg and red fin ney of gilman the maryland scho lastic champ in a thrill-packed match tavares just eked out a 7-4 win nesbitt put mercersburg way out in front by beating pirman of brooklyn poly 5-0 to cop the 145 pound honors ruch of wyoming placed third evans of gilman took top laur els in the 155 pound competition by taking a 7-4 verdict over lou ria of brooklyn poly rossman of blair academy placed third jim jackson a good leg wrestl er from shady side won the 165 pound title by defeating mercers burg's lemmerman 6-3 lemmer man beat phillips of wyoming 4-1 to walk off with second place dave baker of gilman probably the best wrestler of the tourna ment pinned anderson of mer cersburg in 1:40 with a half-nel son and crotch hold to carry off the 175 pound crown kuncowcki of gilman won an easy 11-4 decision over berger of mercersburg to take the heavy weight championship geran of blair was third 289 men now enrolled a total of 289 undergraduate students enrolled at lehigh uni versity during the registration period which closed yesterday george b curtis university reg istrar announced this morning in addition there are 67 stu dents doing graduate work at the university and 22 men and wo men have enrolled for courses given under the lehigh adult education program registrar's of fice figures show among the undergraduate stu dents are 48 new men 44 of which are new freshmen and four stu dents entering with advanced standing there are now 38 dis charged veterans studying at the university of which 21 were en rolled last semester and 17 en tered or reentered this semester of the 289 students more are registered for engineering or chem istry courses than any other cur riculum seventy-six men are studying mechanical or industrial engineering and 46 are enrolled in the chemistry and chemical engi neering departments tau beta pi appoints officers brown and white lehigh university at the meeting of tau beta pi held on wednesday afternoon february 28th in packard lab two new officers were appointed they were ed manning e e june 45 who assumed the post of vice president and lido lacocca m e june 45 who took over the office of corresponding secretary re cently vacated by v warren fox tau beta pi honorary engineer ing society is to engineers what phi beta kappa is to the arts men however there is an addi tional significance to this society inasmuch as it was founded here at lehigh university by profes sor e h williams in 1885 this organization electing its members from juniors in the up per eighth of their class and sen iors in the upper fifth of theirs demands character leadership and participation in extra-curricular activities in addition to scholastic attainment of their candidates delts pledge three elect house officers subscribe -- epitome . . . a
