boothby shettel students select five man group wilson wehner landstreet last issue finds b&w in stew of staff situation with this issue the brown and white concludes its semesters ac tivities and waits and hopes for for enough men to compose a staff next semester all present staff members who will remain in school are urged to register for brown and white next semester with these returning men it is expected that a nucleus for next semester's b&w can be formed around which the new men coming here in february can cluster to increase and improve the staff wehner new if council president group sets plans for proposed handbook at a meeting of the inter-fra ternity council in drown hall last night william g wehner chem e june 45 was elected president of the body to fill the place of william j day who will leave in february albert e vetrosky arts june 45 was elected vice presi dent the post vocated by wehner no other new officers were elected since this was not a regular election regular inter-fraternity council elections are held every two semesters william schwem lein m e feb 46 and richard craig chem e feb 46 retain their posts of secretary and treas urer other business discussed at this meeting include the plans for the proposed freshman handbook which will be printed by the council it was decided that the handbook which will be the first of its kind published at lehigh since september 1942 will in clude pictures of the fraternity houses as well as the house offi cers the next regular meeting of the council will take place the second instead of the first monday in march astrp cadets move out last saturday 112 men of the astrp left lehigh university their original destination was v m i but as this institution was unable to accommodate the group the men are going to be split up and sent to c c n v north georgia college and clemson ag ricultural college in south caro lina of an incoming class of 190 only 112 succeeded in finishing the term the men have already taken the national achievement tests which are given under the spon sorship of the war department the results of these tests are how ever unknown as yet to finish the term successfully the men will also have to pass the tests which will be given by the uni versity during the coming week end the reservists will report to their new destinations on feb 3 in preparation for classes which will start two days later they will have a furlough between the time that they leave lehigh and the time that they are sent to their various locations during their stay here at lehigh the cadets had their quarters in the university dormitories in richards house they were pro vided all meals in lamberton hall the astrp remained enrolled in the university for two three month semesters boothby retains presidency as landstreet wehner shettel and wilson are elected results of the election of the new five man committee on classes elected semesterly to replace class officers for the duration showed willard s boothby i e oct 45 as chairman with the remainder of the committee composed of william g wehner ch e j'4s don shettel ch e f'46 fairfax s landstreet ch e f'46 and sanford w wilson ch e j'4s ballots were tabulated friday evening by a committee of the re tiring five man committee and dr beardslee faculty advisor of ar cadia the newly elected members are invited to attend the next meeting of arcadia at which time officers for the coming semester will be elected the five man committee on classes was originated several semesters ago when it was found that the procedure of having class officers was not feasible because of the large number of classes and the small enrollment in each it was decided to combine the duties of all the class officers into one group the committee on classes under the jurisdiction of this com mittee fell the planning of all uni versity banquets such as that held at the hotel bethlehem last month the planning of all sports rallies and the administration of what would ordinarily be class dances also among the duties of this committee was the student con cert-lecture series but with the return to a more nearly normal student body president day of arcadia appointed a new commit tee to relieve them of this duty engineers learn cold facts as beating system buckles a somewhat tempermental boiler over at the sigma phi epsilon house apparently became overcome with the ennui of fraternity life last friday night and went all-out to beat the record set by the johns town flood in 1889 said boiled let loose and spread water rather promiscuously through out the cellar making the coal bin a rather damp place to be at the time ly uneventful day the silence being ee honorary taps four in reorganizing eta kappa nu national honor ary electrical engineering society has been resumed as an active or ganization on the lehigh campus with the pledging of four men re cently the electrical engineering stu dents selected for membership in clude paul buehler june 45 ed ward manning june 45 donald hamme june 45 and richard t smith feb 46 professors beaver and graber officiated in the tap ping ceremony officers elected in clude buehle r,president hamme vice-president smith secretary treasurer and manning custodian saturday proved to be a relative punctuated only by the sound of ice-picks as several of the more enterprising members harvested ice cubes for the next ho-s-p — ty but saturday's tranquility was alas merely the lull before the storm for on sunday the hot wa ter pipes cracked in two places flooding the dining room and sending a cascade which threat ened to put niagara falls to shame from the opening between the sec ond and third floors on monday when all the mem phi eta sigma has initiation banquet on monday evening january 29 the lehigh chapter of phi eta sigma freshman honorary frater nity held its banquet for this sem ester in lamberton hall the main objects of the banquet were to ini tiate 15 freshmen and to elect five new officers as the former officers will no longer be active the main highlights of the eve ning were billy sheridan's talk on the eastern intercollegiates urg ing that the control of the event go back into the hands of the students where it was originally in order to create more student interest and dr anderson's re sume of the history of the chapter founded in 1930 by g herbert clark then dean of the univer sity of indiana it has grown to the respected position it now holds at lehigh dr anderson's speech was enjoyed by all and the appre ciation of everybody for his splen did headquarters if anyone in the city has any tents he wishes to lease will he please get in touch with the president of the fraternity at the soonest pos sible date class agents hold meeting with 69 per cent of its goal al ready achieved in receipts or pledges the council of lehigh class agents looked hopefully to a 51,000 total at its mid-year con ference here saturday meeting at the hotel bethlehem 31 agents representing lehigh classes from 1883 to 1937 heard dean philip m palmer chairman of the university's administrative committee stress the need for the promised fund total while reas suring the group that the univer sity's over-all financial picture was more than satisfactory cooperation between trustees faculty and alumni has never been better the lehigh dean stated and he praised the faculty for its sacrifice in teaching an additional term at no increase in salary a report from the alumni asso ciation covering fund totals show ed 30,529 received in cash and 5,105 in pledges by january 19 as a direct gift to the university representing an 18,547 increase over the past campaign at the same time an additional 12,199 has been received in alumni dues magazine subscriptions and stu den grant contributions the a v bodine cup awarded annually to that class agent voted as having achieved the most out standing record went to william a cornelius of the class of 1889 who raised his class from 76 per cent participation and collected 2,361.50 for the fund in the 1943 44 campaign after a talk by george r bro thers president of the lehigh alumni association the conference was concluded by a dinner vol lii no 27 price 5 cents bethlehem pa wednesday january 31 1945 brown and white lehigh university modern art ... in art gallery the lehigh university art gallery will be the scene of an exhibi tion from the museum of modern art on mystery in paint from feb 4 to 25 the exhibition will include salvadore dali pierre roy peter blume and others sculpture work will be by julia a weder wm w swallow and lucille l fatzinger mrs fatzinger will be at work in the gallery on feb 8 from 3to 5 the exhibit itself will be open from 3 to 5 on sundays and tuesday through friday the lehigh astrp basketball team which won six of the ten games it played as photographed with its coach captain sumner
