* wlw m/+jn fairchild/martinoale libr n0.008a & m / i%v4 friday may 7 1993 lehigh university fraternity rush rules defined for next year vol 100 no 46 be very beneficial it will help cast a better image for the greek system foltz said besides every one is here for school first deciding what penalties should be as signed forrush violations was another area of concern foltz said the proposal more clearly defines the penalties for rush violations in the past we've had problems with houses giving out early bids foltz said but the penalties were not as structured as they could have been the new rules should prevent problems from occurring next year foltz continued according to foltz the fraternities were upset with the administration'sproposal and therefore met with alumni to draw up a proposal to keep things basically the same fraternity rush will begin as it has in the past with open houses in the fall bids will not be allowed to be given out until the spring semester begins one reason for holding bid day in janu ary is to make sure all those rushing have met a minimum gpa requirement this year the requirement was a 1.8 next year it will be 1.9 and in the 1994-95 school year it will be a 2.0 foltz feels this requirement will prove to by deborah schwartz news editor after much deliberation between the ad ministration and the interfraternity council a compromise was agreed upon establishing fraternity rush rules for the next two years the administration wanted to move rush to the spring in order to give the incoming freshmen men an opportunity to assimilate to life at lehigh before joining the greek system garry foltz 94,ifcpresident,believesrush canhelpthe freshmen getusedtobeingat lehigh rush is a good way to meet people and get comfortable with lehigh foltz said see ifc page 5 another change in the system provides for more interaction between rush counselors and rushees foltz wants to set up a program where rush counselors contact freshmen during their first week to teach them aboutthegreeksystem the rush counselors would almost be like big brothers foltz said also four criteria will be used to evaluate the new rush system foltz said in addition to looking at grades random groups of parents freshmen men and gryphons will also be interviewed to determine which aspects of see gap page 8 lehigh president peter likins has au thorized a committee to chart the university's future and avoid financial trouble but it may recommend a plan to the board of trustees that would shrink the university ' s workforce . the goals and priorities board will an nounce recommendations for a new special retirement policy on may 17 according to james gunton dean of the college of arts and science and gap board member the plan will help lehigh counter formidable financial difficulties in the long term the problems are sufficient enough to lead to a probable downsizing of the univer sity workforce he said but john woltjen vice president for ad ministration and treasurer said the plan is still in the discussion stages he said the gap board is considering retirement plans to shrink the university workforce but could not rule out outright firings those things are difficult to do he said wewanttobe]as humane as possible in terms of how we're dealing with people we haven't gone that far at this stage of the game woltjen said lehigh s financial problems are not peculiar to higher education we didn't get enough graduate stu dents enrolled he said because of this lower enrollment the university had to adjust its budget to account for an addi tional 1.3 million that they would have to pay lehigh is not allowed to accrue a deficit by order of its board of trustees he also said lehigh aggressively spends money to provide financial aid for under graduates he said he could not provide specifics clubs offer new alternatives to regular routines page 9
