the rev merrill miles moore rector of trinity episcopal church has been named as speaker for lehigh university's combined baccalaureate and commencement exercises on feb 18 the program will be preceded by the traditional academic pro plans for the graduation which will be held at 11 a m in packer memorial church were announced today by dean philip m palmer chairman of the university's ad ministrative committee debators play host friday in packard laboratory the jos eph klein reading room this fri day delta omicron theta will be host to five colleges joining togeth er to form the lehigh valley de bating league the league includes cedar crest college lafayette moravian college for men mora vian college for women muhlen berg and lehigh although lafay ette and moravian college cannot contribute their share in the league in the active debating sche dule since they are without debat ing teams at present john tuberty arts feb 46 president of d o t after initiat continued on page 4 cession and graduates and their parents will be guests at a tea to be held during the afternoon the rev moore who has been rector of trinity church for 17 years is active in bethlehem com munity life president of the board of direc tors of the council of social agen cies he has also served on the board of the family welfare asso ciation community chest the le high valley child guidance clinic and the northampton county board of the department of pub lic assistance the rev moore was graduated from mount hermon school col gate university hamilton n v and the general theological sem inary new york city ordained to the deaconate by bishop charles fiske of central new york in april 1924 he was advanced to the priesthood of the protestant episcopal church in december of the same year by bishop e h coley suffragan bishop of central new york both ordinations took place in syra cuse n y following his ordination he was appointed oneida county mission ary with headquarters in utica n v and was in charge of mis sions at deerfield trenton hol land patent brookfield and bridge water n y in 1925 he was named curate of grace church utica serving in that capacity until coming to bethlehem in 1928 grace hall is scene of ball this saturday les saunders band will provide rhythm the interfraternity council is once again sponsoring the famous if ball this saturday evening jan uary 20 1945 dancing from ten to two on the upper floor of grace hall les saunders and his thirteen piece outfit will be on hand to provide the music for the gala evening les and his band hail from harrisburg and have been having unusually successful en gagements here in the lehigh val ley they should be well worth coming to hear to make the evening complete there will be an exciting wrestling match between the lehigh engi neers and the princeton tigers on the lower gym floor just before the dance the contest is scheduled to begin at 8 p m and with the brown and white smarting from last week's heartbreaking defeat the meet should be interesting in deed tickets are on sale at the mem ber fraternities of the interfrater nity council and can be obtained from the heads of the various houses petitions for week-end guests should be in the dean's of fice not later than this friday as usual all privileges will be offered to students as is always done dur ing promenades refreshments will be provided in the form of coca-cola candy and soda by a concession the committee for the dance consists of william day bus june 45 william wehner ch e june 45 richard craig e p feb 46 and william schwemlein m e feb 46 new bio lab given by estes plans for the complete recon struction of the present elemen tary biology laboratory have been made possible through the grant by dr w l estes jr one of the first lehigh students to use the present laboratory the project is a memorial to dr estes father who served as lecturer on physio logy and hygiene from 1883 to 1923 he received the honorary degree of doctor of science here in 1934 the announcement was made public at a recent faculty meeting it was disclosed that the new fa cilities which were provided for in the original gift of the late pro fessor edward h williams jr will be known as the william lawrence estes laboratory dr stanley j thomas head of the department of biology declared that the gift will be of infinite value to lehigh students dr thomas also stated that the gen eral zoological laboratories will be continued on page 3 grapplers bow to big red a breathless home crowd saw the lehigh grapplers go down in defeat at the hands of cornell's crimson-clad for the first time in eleven years the final score of 18-12 indicates that the margin was three falls in the ithaca team's favor as the bouts were split evenly the result was uncertain up to the final heavyweight match when lehigh's joe koran was pinned by what the crowd considered a fluke campbell cornell heavy was behind in score throughout the first two periods and koran was clearly the superior wrestler of the pair as the third period started koran reversed and plac ed campbell in a near pinning position but even as the near capacity crowd roared the cornell wrestler rolled over with a mighty heave and came up with a pinning body press veteran too tough the score as the match went into the final bout was 13-12 for cornell and campbell's five-point er made the margin 18-12 an other fall came in the 175 pound class when lehigh's dave gerb met cornell's 1944 holdover rod ney steiff . gerb a newcomer to the wrestling ranks did not have a chance as he went down before a double bar arm in 1:35 of the second stanza lehigh started off well as bruce hinlein managed to eke out a 3-2 decision over the crimson's kuhl in the 121 pound class confronted yesterday the intercollegiate debating meet scheduled for last evening has been postponed until friday evening of this week the members of d.o.t have announced that the meeting on fri day will take place in the giant klein memorial room in packard lab the affair will get under way at 7:30 o'clock and as previously announced refreshments will be served at the close of the program every
