vol 99n0.19 friday january 24 1992 lehigh university the brown and white lehigh dispenses morning-after pill by lydia federico news writer for more than two-and-a-half years the lehigh university health center has quietly distributed a morning-after pill to prevent unwanted pregnancies in female students who request the treatment the medication ovral is not related to the highly controversial ru-486 abortion pill although it is available for legal pre scription by physicians ovral has not been approved by the food and drag administra tion female students who have had unpro tected sex including rape or sex in which their birth control failed can receive a pre scription for ovral treatment by health center doctors patients take two ovral pills within the first 72 hours then two more in the next 12 hours each pill contains os mg of estrogen and 0.5 mg of progestin natural hormones which combine to induce menstruation by preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg in a woman's uterine lining the pills are taken while it is still too early to determine if fertilization has taken place the health center firmly backs its deci sion to provide ovral dr stanley yellin health center director said that people who accept that the health center provides birth control should be able to accept that the center provides ovral we are not encouraging it but things tuition to increase by 1 050 next year by marc j goldstein news editor the lehigh board of trustees approved a 6.7 percent increase in tuition a jump from 15,650 to 16,700 for the 1992-93 academic year at its meeting last friday the $ 1 050 increase in tuition was accompanied by an increase in the 21-meal plan fees from 2,070 to 2,220 and an increase in residence hall fees from 2,870 to 3,020 making the total cost for a lehigh undergraduate 21,940 the tuition increase follows the general plan of the university to continually decrease the percentage in creases in tuition according to james tiefenbrunn director of the budget office we have been working each year at bringing the percentage down said john woltjen vice president for administration and treasurer in terms of the $ 1 050 increase this year which is 6.7 percent it is the lowest percentage increase we have had in 22 years from that perspective we are sensitive in endeavoring to bring that percentage down since 1988 when lehigh began its resource man agement program the percentage increases in tuition have fallen from a high of 9.21 percent to next year's low of 6.7 percent over the past two years the absolute change has been constant at 1,050 to compete for the best students we have to offer an education superior to our lower-priced competi tors said peter likins lewgh president we also must keep our costs down and raise as much money for scholarships as we can so the price our students actually pay doesn't become too much more than those lower-priced institutions likins said in other words we face the same challenge as the rest of private education and i think we're leading the way in meeting that challenge one major force behind past tuition increases was newprograms and services woltjensaid but expenses in the form of salaries and the new financial aid program are now the greatest factors lehigh recently adopted the policy of guaranteeing to meet the full financial need of all regularly admitted u.s students or permanent residents the university expects to spend almost 1 7 million on financial aid next year up from this year's 14.3 million we are in a campaign at this point to try to raise tragedy strikes lehigh b&w photo by jason stanford students faculty and staff mourn the loss of three students and one professor see lehigh page 3 see controversial page 5 see tuition page 4 siblings at lehigh page b1
