brown and white vol 99n0.19 friday november 15 1991 lehigh university it's the end of the globe your pulitzer prize winner stops its presses permanently by chris dolan brown and white news writer the voiceof the bethlehem area since 1867 may not be as loud or as clear after last week's purchase of bethlehem's globe times by the thomson corp publisher of the express in easton the sale of the paper has numerous implications for lehigh including possible impact on local coverage of university events and the printing of the brown and white lehigh week and other lehigh publications which were printed at the globe-times decreasing circulation and the deepen ing recession which hit the entire newspa per business particularly hard prompted the sale john bitzer jr president of beth lehem's globe-times publishing said we were ready to sell because of the deteriorat ing conditions in the newspaper business the circulation of the globe-times had declined more than 50 percent in the last decade according to the audit bureau of circulation figures the figures show circu lation peaking at 38,726 in march 1982 and falling to 18,468 on sept 30 1991 ann taylor publisher of the globe-times this alternative would offer better quality objective and more responsible journalism than any other possibility taylor said according to a statement by bitzcr the sale of the 124-year-old daily to the toronto based thomson corp was contingent upon assurances that bethlehem would continue to have a positive advocate express-times publisher timothy sowecke said the paper will continue a strong com mitment to bethlehem news and public af fairs some believe the competition between the morning call and the new express-times will improve coverage by both papers the morning call is already gearing up for the battle to become bethlehem's new hometown paper walter trimble associ ate professor of journalism and an editor at the morning call said the call has al ready introduced a new sunday magazine a new saturday weekender edition for be thlehem and has already beefed-up cover age of easton and bethlehem in response to the loss of the globe the globe-times b4w photo by anne weit2man considered other options and decided merg ing with the express would be more appro priate than with allentown's morningcall oooh la la hy saporta 94 of kappa sigma performs in drag at the annual mr ms lehigh con test sponsored by alpha omi cron pi sorority more than 300 students packed lower grace hall monday night to witness 18 participants dance sing and give knee-slapping imitations the event raised 700 for the arthritis research foun iation derek bcringer 94 of kappa sig was crowned mr lehigh lu theatre presents glengarry glen ross lehigh's women of the 90s lehigh university's theatre productions of david mamet's pul itzer prize winning glengarry glen ross open tonight and run through november 16 17 19 20 and 21 at the wilbur drama workshop glengarry glen ross is a play set in a chicago real estate office where each salesman is pitted against the others in a ruthless sales contest the play revolves around the real estate sales contest designed by the office manager in which the winner gets a cadillac and the losers get fired it becomes appar ent that the contest is rigged so the two older salesmen will be fired and the young upstart will win the rules of the contest and the relationships between the men are further strained when there is a burglary at the real estate office and thecustomer leads arestolen the desparation and competitive nessof the men brings a survival of-the-fittest mentality ripa said so that the salesmen will do any thing to close a deal according to ripa the pro duction is the culmination of a se mester-long project the actors chris bohan 94 jerome halli gan 95 david hiles 92 john rensel 92 joseph riddlesberger 92 doug silver 93 and hassan young 93 are enrolled in thea ter 185 and have been meeting to discuss the play and other mamet works all semester ripa said mamet's writing style is a brutally poetic language vulgarity to some people one has to almost read it or hear it to know but it is a kind of linguistic style beyond realism he said it is very brutal but it is very power ful above doug silver left plays character george aaronow and john rensel right plays character dave moss both are salesmen selling real estate on the glen garry highlands in florida left joseph riddlesberger plays char acter richard roma roma is a salesman pressuring an unsuspecting buyer see globe page 2 page 7
