the brown and white lehigh university vol 99 no 1 meters compound parking problem at lehigh friday september 6 1991 see meter page 5 b&w photo by ross bell student argues over a ticket after her meter expired for use of the city streets lehigh agreed to lease the 167 spaces for 2 years out of university funds the city of bethlehem has been more than gracious with us in trying to solve our problems she said they didn't have to pass this ordi nance for those resigned to paying for their parking bethlehem offers three ways to do it all costing 25 cents an hour two four and ten-hour meters surround campus all patrolled by the bpa fines for parking at an expired meter start at 5 kovacs said student faculty and staff alternatives include parking at mountain top campus and traveling to lower campus via shuttle bus or paying bethlehem 15 a month to park at the adams and mechanics street lot i think it's going to work kovacs said it's not going to be easy for everyone but it's an alternative until something else is done but some students tend not to agree it stinks said gene heskin 92 a brodhead resident they're just trying to squeeze more money out of the student popula tion he said morton street which runs by mitchell drake brown and white news editor many students coming back to lehigh this fall were surprised to find 335 addi tional parking meters installed on the beth lehem streets surrounding campus the meters resulted from a joint parking study conducted by lehigh university and the bethlehem parking authority the reason the meters were installed was to create more turnover of parking spaces said bpa executive director mi chael spitzer spitzer said problems arose when le high students kept their cars parked on the street for weeks on end that's not the intent of parking spaces on the street he said if you want to store cars there are other places to store cars but not on the city streets spitzer said students have expressed some concern about the meters but he also said he feels the meters will benefit commuter students and the merchants that work at or near lehigh hopefully people will not drive down from the upper campus and use the shuttle service thereby freeing a lot of spaces he said patricia kovacs lehigh's assistant man ager of parking services said she was con cerned about the installation of the meters at first because of their potential impact on brodhead house residents approximately 100 brodhead residents own cars she said in the past 50 would park in the brodhead and packer lot and 50 on the city streets with the installation of meters on morton street long-term parking thereby students is no longer an option she said the com promise reached was to make half the maginnes hall lot 50 spaces available to brodhead students kovacs said the change left some faculty and staff without a place to park we had an ordinance drawn up which passed last week we had to pay the city 40 per space pilot program allows profilatics to be dispensed in dormatories by beth-anne guthrie brown and white news writer condom vending machines were installed in taylor residential college drinker house and the student health center's self-treatment room last summer but the health center will no longer provide students with free condoms it is our hope that by requiring students to purchase the condoms they will become more sexually responsible and take sexual issues more seriously said health educator marie christy see condom page 19 the vending machines are installed in one female bathroom and one male bathroom in the two residence halls a fifth machine is installed in the self-treatment room of the student health center each condom costs 50 cents educational material on sexually transmitted diseases including acquired immune deficiency syndrome and instructions on how to use a con dom are located next to each machine the con doms are name-brand latex condoms and contain i a closer look at lehigh's ni traffic changes 1 both grant st and the roadway south of the chapel to taylor st are now one way east 2)brodhead aye above packer aye packer aye between webster and vine sts taylor st above packer and eighth aye from montclatr to trernbley sri are now faculty/staff parking only the spaces 1 67 in all have been leased by lehigh for two years 3 half'of the maginnes hall parking lot is now reserved for students in brodhead house providing 50 addi tional spaces 4 two four and ten hour meters are now on several city streets to provide short term parking for visitors and students 5 new four way-stop inter sections have been added n two locations at the inter section of west packer aye and brodhead aye and at the intersection of east packer aye and taylor st lifestyle a slice of life at lehigh page 1 3
