lehigh university to find out what kind of problems it may present weiss said before it can be assured that byob will work at lehigh reactions by the students will determine whether it will be successful in the spring gradual byob implementation will also inform students of the social changes they will have to accept according to bob robeson assistant dean of greek affairs guard the question most frequently asked dur ing discussion was why take an entire semester to do this krispin wagoner coordinator of greek affairs said the idea of promoting byob is to promote social responsibility the challenge in making this new policy work is the difficulty in breaking tradition wagoner said although a long-standing tradition will be difficult to give up for lehigh students the byob proposal will prove itself beneficial dave we|ss 92 92 ifc president by dana d'arienzo news writer efcpresidentdave weiss 92 announced that the long-expected move to a bring your own beer policy was passed at tuesday's interfratemity council meeting after several revisions in the past ifc members finally came to an agreement on how to do the policy justice in the form of a gradual implementation during the fall se mester when the proposal was first brought to the floor byob was to be implemented at the beginning of the fall semester without notification students who have grown accustomed to the current social policy at fraternities would have to adjust to a completely differ ent social life weiss said after extensive debate mark bovenizer 93 president of theta delta chi fraternity suggested that a gradual approach would be more effective it was decided that byob will be imple mented for four weekends out of the fall semester the executive committee will choose which weekends will be designated as byob weekends if all goes well in those four weekends b yob will be in effect for every weekend in the spring semester the fall semester policy is a trial period new byob policy will be implemented on trial basis beginning with four weekends in fall semester ifc vote kisses kegs good-bye at lu it's a good idea said robeson it's a way of informing students of what will be happening come spring semester greg pappas 93 ifc treasurer also agrees with the gradual approach to byob according to pappas neither the students nor the ifc members will be caught off see byob page 6 she added that many other universities have adopted successful byob policies syracuse university has a catering service which serves in the hosting process at frater nity parties other schools such as cornell university and pennsylvania state university have also adopted b yob as their regular social policy . the best way to break tradition and successfully move on is to do it gradually said weiss free beer at fraternity parties has been known to cause problems in the past these changes are clearly a benefit to students who want to participate in lehigh social events at least we are dragging our feet in the right direction pappas said as defense to the criticism about the gradual approach the practical benefit of byob accord ing to weiss is that with a limited amount of alcohol there is a limited liability if fraternities are not supplying the alco see assaults page 3 the past week was marred by three unrelated criminal incidents against lehigh students one violent and two of a sexual nature in the violent incident three students were as saulted at 2 a.m wednesday at the intersection of morton street and brodhead avenue by five males according to accounts of bethlehem police reports in the allentown morning call and easton express times maurice malfatti brian dockray and david kennedy brothers at theta delta chi fraternity were approaching their car after leaving the tally ho bar on fourth street when a car containing the assailants drove up dockray said that one man in the car yelled at the students without provocation all five of the car's occupants then got out of their car and began beating the students with clubs and sticks the five all described by the bethlehem police as hispanic males broke dockray s nose bit malfatti on the finger and punched kennedy in the face all three students also sustained bruises after being hit on the head and chest friends of the three found them sitting on the curb soon after the attackers left and called bethlehem police for assistance dockray said the three were taken to st luke's hospital where they were treated by kara villamil science pages editor lehigh students target of three separate incidents ketth tessler 95 lights a candle at the holocaust memorial wednesday night see story page 3 brown and white friday may 1,1992 vol 99 no 46 3 2 s i ml hi pooh and friends metaphors for life page 9
