the failure of perestroika sov iet president mikhail gor bachev's idea to create a par tial private enterprise system in russia it seems that there is a general breakdown of the russian economy barry said food shortages plagued the country barry said the state food stores had very little to offer on the shelves but the special markets had an abundance of appealing foods special markets sell pro ducts grown by private farm ers and their high prices are out of reach to all but the wealthy black market dis tributors and foreigners barry also said he saw many beggars on moscow streets five or six years ago beg gars were never seen in rus sia because the police would arrest them he said by christopher schneider brown and white news writer the soviet union's social and economic collapse was witnessed firsthand by don ald barry lehigh's interna tional studies director barry recently made a 10 day trip to russia to evaluate lehigh's study abroad pro gram and to deliver informa tion to lawyers who will att end a conference at lehigh in may concerning russian law he also invited the deputy mayor of moscow to speak at lehigh while traveling through russia barry said he obser ved signs of economic collap se political unease and a general feeling of unrest in the people ofthe soviet union one sign of social unrest was that 6 out ofthe 15 soviet republics want their inde pendence and corporation said i was more focused on my job in my 20s and 30s than on having children it's a very delicate balance this balance is becoming the norm for many of today's career women she said many successful women enjoy a full family and career life with out too much trouble said lehigh admissions director pat boig the glass ceiling concept in which women hit a career point in the corporate or work structure over which they will not rise was a topic of panel discussion b&w photo by eric van der hayden dorothy stevenson speaks out for women a panel of successful women who work in the lehigh valley discussed issues and challenges of women in the workplace wednesday as part of women's week the six women on the panel said they deal differently with the pressures and environments in their careers but all agreed that the picture is still not rosy for women seeking careers our society has to realize that child-bearing and career focus are both important to women and you should be able to have both said denise gurer a computer science graduate student at lehigh there are those women who are willing and able and want to juggle all these things added kimberly by wendy demarco brown and white news writer professor tells of soviet unrest the brown and white perestroika's apparent failure has caused gorbachev to lose most of his liberal supporters and has caused him to fall back on many conservative forces such as the army and the secret pol ice barry said the unrest began when gor bachev backed down from implementing perestrokia according to barry gorbachev claims he is still going to implement the pro gram at a slower pace but this doesn't seem to have helped calm the soviet people barry saw a lot of social unrest including a coal min er's demonstration he said most of the demonstrations called for more reforms or even the resignation of gor bachev the russian people are strong and have been living with hardships for many years barry said they have the capacity to
