see tutoring page 4 b&w photo by marshall villarosa students taste matzoh for the first time during hillels model seder see story page 2 vol 98 no 39 friday april 5 1991 the brown and white lehigh university workshop gives tips for students on job interviews by kara gaffney brown and white news writer lehigh students were offered first-hand tips on making contacts in the professional world resume writing and i ntervi ewi ng at the tough job search workshop march 18 the workshop was hosted by career advising coordina tor donna goldfeder and conducted by brian sullivan 75 of sullivan & co sybil stershic 75 of quality service marketing and edwin martinez from bellcore these experts gave tips for job hunting sullivan said a person must first decide what he or she is most interested in find out what you like and then find out how this can be used in the job market he said networking or making contacts among fellow profes sionals can help students by telling them what a particular job is about and use your family your h ? a p v friends and aquaintances establish x ■• contacts and their connections to find i cant out information grantee brian sullivan 75 vaßi net " sullivan & co working will get you a job but it is a way to gain contacts and information on the job stershic said she reminded the students that networking does not end with the first job she mentioned several sources of contacts including the lehigh university career advisory network luc an lucan consists of lehigh graduates who volunteer to help answer questions in their area of expertise use lucan to find out what people who are doing what you eventually want to do to research what they did to get to that point sullivan said stershic also told the students to get involved in courtesy of r & s photo kr members of the cycling team enjoy the spring weather from left carmen d'onofrio 92 tim hancock ram mudambl pete braschos 92 and marty smith 93 see workshop page 8 internships pay for students by deanne sabarese brown and white news writer lehigh students from all three colleges and many different majors hold internships dur ing school for hands-on experience in a specific field said marilyn mackes director of career services donna goldfeder career advising coordi nator said the best place to find internships is in the career services library there are books binders and folders to help students get a job find job listings and view statistics on previous employments goldfeder said there are three basic kinds of internships unpaid with job training which are the most structured paid and internships for academic credit most internships occur during the summer but some can take place during the semester a bulletin board posts job availabilities outside the career servicesoffice.some internships come through the academic departments themselves goldfeder said goldfeder said internships are good to put on resumes because they show knowledge and can help a person make a decision between fields mm coltingwood assistant director of career services said organizations value internships because it can give them potential candidates for later employment judith lasker associate dean of students said many internships can be done as an independent study if students contact a department to make arrangements see internships page 8 lehigh's tutoring services sent more than 710 students on their way towards improv ing their grades last semester the university offers both a student-taught tutoring ser vice run through the office of student life and a tutoring service taught mainly by grad uate students at the learning center these two services are both seperatly operated and provide non-overlapping sub jects said sharon basso resse assistant dean of stu by karen jones brown and white news writer tutees are striving for a's with the help of caring tutors dents and director of the stu dent tutoring service the office of student life's tutoring program offers tutors for almost every freshman and sophmore level course except english the learning center gives tutoring services in both english and math and provides help in reading and study skills the program is a life-saver for some people bas so-reese said it works best when the student uses the tutor on a weekly basis those who call sporadically or the lifestyle lehigh's aspiring cartoonist page 9
