fraternities dormitories open to house weekend guests rutgers is football foe centenary sends for soldiers and civilians the senior class of centenary junior college hackettstown n j is giving a dance on november 11 and would like civilians and servicemen of lehigh university to attend dates will be provided and also sleeping accomodations will be taken care of for those who plan to stay overnight the dance starts at 8:30 and the school will have a committee to meet the men when they arrive any men wish ing to go to the dance will leave their names at the arcadia office in drown hall before noon mon day november &. l u grants 41 degrees on october 15 at 3:30 in the afternoon lehigh university held its third graduation of 1944 as 41 degrees were awarded in packer chapel following the prayer led by dr beardslee and an organ interlude played by dr shields dr fraser metzger dean of men at rutgers university delivered the com mencement address to the gath ered audience and graduates the degrees were conferred by the respective heads of the various schools dean tomlinson fort conferred doctor of philosophy degrees upon four candidates — clifton neumoyer in chemistry bela erdoss in me robert stout and yu-lin yao in metallurgy master of art degrees were con ferred upon paul fink paul nagle zena platoff and herbert schlenker in education and christian miesse in mathematics master of science degrees were confrered upon edward fehnel and helen zable in chemistry and joaquin isaza in met e professor robert p more pre sented the bachelor of arts degree to robert gili and joseph tau beta pi yesterday oct 31 1944 at 4:00 p m the formal initiation took place in the packard auditorium under the chairmanship of robert mayer chem.e june 45 tau beta pi is a national col legiate honorary engineering so ciety which was founded in 1885 by dr edward williams jr at lehigh university tau beta pi proposes to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and ex emplary character as under grad uates or by the attainments as alumni and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in the engineering schools of america tau beta pi continued on page 6 plans are complete for the big arcadia dance to be held this saturday night on the upper floor of grace hall dick smith and his orchestra will be on hand to pro vide sweet and danceable music the dance will start at ten o'clock and last until one the dance will be semi-formal and corsages will be optional dean and mrs congdon and dr and mrs beardslee will chaper one at least 120 couples are ex pected to be present at lehigh's last dance before christmas the dormitory and a large num ber of fraternity houses will be opened for the guests of lehigh students on saturday night and many fraternities will have week end guests another feature of the day will be a football game between le high and rutgers university the game promises to be an exciting one with are expected however lehigh alumni now serving in the armed forces will provide a military atmos phere as many usually attend dances at their alma mater b&w sponsors political poll with the presidential campaign now moving into its last week the brown and white has suddenly discovered that lehigh too is greatly interested in the national issue since the b and w rep resents student opinion we are greatly interested in how lehigh voters stand in the present cam paign therefore we are conduct ing a poll to discover what man lehigh feels will be best fitted for the job the ballots are included in the present issue of the paper and must be submitted to the arcadia office by noon on friday nov 3 there has been exceptionally great interest in the coming elec tion among lehigh faculty and students proof of this fact has been the massive but effective ad vertisements on behalf of their candidates paid for and written by the students themselves l it a organizes it all started when the lehigh republican association under the careful supervision of bob mertz affixed photographs of dewey and bricker on the hallowed walls of drinker house the pic tures had previously been ob tained from the republican nat ional headquarters an opposing force immediately sprung up led by sherman sass and allen goodman who of course took the side of our commander in-chief the campaign has since become more vigorous with both sides avidly interested in the success of their candidates arcadia expects an honest close count of all votes and results of the election will be printed in the next issue of brown and white cops probe l u thefts 500 missing six fraternities robbed last week a series of robberies on thurs day night october 26 in six le high fraternity houses in bethle hem and fountain hill where about 500 in cash was stolen is being investigated by the authori ties of the two municipalities it is probable that the four men who escaped from the northampton county prison at easton on oct 19 may be involved in the thefts five of the houses are located in bethlehem and the sixth theta chi 805 delaware aye is in fountain hill at theta chi about 140 was stolen with entrance be ing made through the unlocked front door sometime between 3 and 7 a m friday fountain hill police are conducting an investi gation the other fraternity houses rob bed were delta phi 229 warren square with 54 missing pi lambda phi 141 e market st 35 missing sigma chi 240 e broad st with 75 missing sig ma phi epsilon 61 w market st with 50 missing and beta theta pi on the university campus with 56 missing in all the houses except sigma phi epsilon police believe that the thieves gained entrance through front doors which were unlocked at the latter house a cellar win dow was forced open entered from front all the houses robbed but pi lambda phi use the system in which all members of the living group sleep in a dormitory room therefore the intruders could search the houses with little fear of discovery the thieves did not take draft cards jewelry or other valuables with the result that some students did not become aware of their loss till almost noon a bethlehem detective said fri
