inter-fraternity bowling league college elects cheer leaders vol xxvii no 9 price five cents varsity to tackle carnegie goal of 500 set for band fund drive proper style college decides to outfit band in semi-finals tennis tourney nears finals upper leg has reached the rules governing inter=fraternity matches announced tryouts for the rutgers meet to be held saturday tomorrow's game with carnegie tech first in three years voted down perm state special discussed announcements made game at pittsburgh rote simendinger and henzle man still on injured list monday chapel of next week to be memorial to roosevelt the undefeated brown and white eleven left bethlehem at 7 15 p.m yesterday for pittsburgh w t here they will encounter the fast carnegie tech eleven on saturday afternoon a large gathering of enthusiastic students was on hand at the lehigh valley station to give the team a send off being the first game away this season it will be an excellent test of the eleven s ability on foreign terri tory this is the first game with carnegie in three years and judg ing from their teams of the past and their record this season coach keady's unbeaten team will have a hard battle anticipating this an unusually large squad consist ing of twenty-six men was taken on the trip so that the playing strength will not be weakened by any injuries that may occur the trio of star backfield men rote simendinger and henzelman t9 xiake the trip but r^imess the lafayette-pennsyl vania game to size up the down the river rivals strength their absence from the regular line-up though keenly felt will be ably filled by liston douglas wysocki and smith whose work has shown marked improvement in practice the past week with a little more than a week before the rutgers cross country run all this week the candidates for cross country have been putting forth their best training efforts to get into shape for the time trials which will be held saturday on the st luke's course the first seven men to finish will be rated as the cross country team and will make the trip to rutgers but since only the first fwe men score it will be vital that every man do a little bit better than state ■nov 15 — intercollegiate cham pions at easton nov 19 — dual run versus la fayette and muhlenberg at easton ' even through the team has not been chosen there is a first string of runners who the campus circuit and on wednesday the mountain course was torn off on this last run several candidates made very good time thursday most of the work was on the track while friday the entire cross country squad will walk around the st luke's course in order that each individual runner may be sized up and ac counted for on the entire run sat urday the members of the second squad will be stationed at various points along the course continued on third page a regular bloody wednesday scrimmage was held this week with the scrubs lined up against the varsity besides being excellent soccer at a recent meeting of the ath letic committee of the inter-fra ternity council it was decided that this year's inter-fraternity bowl ing tournament will start on oc tober 29 each fraternity will have an opportunity of playing every other fraternity and the winning team will be presented with a large loving cup these series of matches have indications of providing no little amount of excitement and keen competition between the vari ous fraternities due to the un settled conditions of last year it was impossible for the bowling league to stage its annual tourna ment hence this year's matches should be of added inteerst and it is expected that every fraternity in college will take an active part the athletic committee announ ces the following rules of the league : 1 teams to have four men only 2 matches are to be governed by a a rules 3 absence of a team constitutes a default unless the teams con cerned agree that game be played , jfc f hin a.wwk of that iat „ 4 teams concerned will pay ex penses of match 5 scores will be turned in with in three days after game to any member of athletic committee v de wysocki 20 chairman ; j g bergdoll 20 ; m p paret jr 20 the team winning the greatest percentage of matches will be awarded the cup the games may be played in any alleys agreed up on by the teams concerned the schedule will be published in the next issue of the brown and white civil meet postponed the results of this week's tennis play in the lehigh tournament finds beck and mattson in the semi-finals in the upper leg beck has defeated four men in straight sets while mattson has done the same with three men the lower leg of the tournament is not suffi ciently advanced to have a man in the semi-finals but all indications are that hall and estes will battle finals in that leg the match between beck and mattson will no doubt be hotly con tested throughout the result of which will be of no little interest if the weather conditions are fav orable the finals wall be played off the latter part of this week or the first part of next week thej will be played on the university courts and the match will be the best three out of five matches the tennis results can be found on another page of this issue officer chosen for r.o.t.c companies the work of organizing the r o t c is proceeding rapidly so far 253 men have enlisted and the num ber will probably reach 260 before ments close the men have been di vided according to height into three companies of about eighty men each companies a and c are the tall companies while the men of company b are smaller the offi cers of the battalion are company a w b shirk 20 captain ; com pany b g l childs 21 captain ; and company c r a childs 21 captain five of the six lieu tenants have been appointed but have not yet been assigned to their companies they are r a read 20 l p leverich 20 a e forstall 21 ; r d blake 21 and f a oehm 21 all these men have had experiences in the army or navy and so will make compe tent officers combined musical club elections it is evident that the band is be ing more than tolerated it is be ing appreciated it was only a little more than three weeks ago that the organization was assembl ed and a harmonious whole made from a number of chaotic units but coming down to brass tacks the band is something that lehigh realizes she needs and she is willing to boost it at the college meeting last wed nesday it was decided to outfit the band laf ayette has a uniformed unit and it is within reason to de sire lehigh s band to make as good an appearance the alumni will provide uniforms but new and ad ditional instruments are also need ed it has been definitely decided to make a drive for 500 for this purpose and the money is to be raised through contributions by the student body the tendency in bands of the present day is to use low-pitched instruments furthermore al though it is possible in a few cases to change high-pitch instruments to low-pitch the converse is not true the majority of instruments used by the lehigh band are of the antirmateri pitch variety •. those playing clarinet and similar reed instruments very important in a well balanced band are shut out by reason of a difference in pitch to make the necessary ad ditions and adjustments consider able money is needed director flory has corresponded with the war department and has high hopes of securing at a considerable reduction instruments of a stand ard make which would be other wise out of reach but even if the instruments are secured from the government at a reduction the sum of 500 is not by bevan bow man boynton and childs were elected these men will act as cheer leaders under e gonzales head cheer leader at all college games smokers and meetings dr n m emery followed the elections with who would be will ing to pay for a ticket a week in advance so as to assure the train but as 125 men could not be ob tained the plan failed the game with perm state will be one of le high's hardest and the team de serves the support of the students at state college the train fare to state college would be 11.82 plus pullman fare for those not desiring to sit up in the coaches owing to the condemning of the road bed between bellefonte and state college the trips between these two towns will have to be made in automobiles meals can be obtained at either bellefonte or state college as the plans of the special did not include a dining car it had been arranged to have the special leave south bethle hem at 7 30 p.m friday novem ber 7 arriving at bellefonte at 3 a.m saturday morning and the same time for the departure of the train from bellefonte would be followed saturday evening bosey reiter spoke on the raising of 500 among the students for the purpose of buying instru ments for the band the band is a new organization and has shown that it is worthy of the support of the student body and according to the response given to his appeal to the men the band will undoubtedly be a success he guaranteed 50 in behalf of the athletic association and said that several of the alumni would outfit the band with uniforms a number of announcements were made after which the meeting adjourned on wednesday senior students in the courses of metallurgy chemical and mining engineering visited the plant of the u s metals refining co at chrome n j the trip was in charge of prof j w richards head of the department f metallurgy the party consist ing of about 50 men was split into a number of small groups and a complete tour of the plant made luncheon was served at the plant
