lehigh celebrated the 125 th anniv ersary of the signing of its charter on sunday with a proclamation by ken smith bethlehem mayor and lehigh alumnus smith presented his proclamation to president peter likins at the varsity wrestling meet against syracuse at 1 p.m in stabler arena and convoca tion center smith said lehigh has brought quality of life to the commun ity the university's original charter established lehigh as a polytechnic college for the education of youth in the borough of south bethlehem on feb 9 1866 it was signed by the speakers of the pennsylvania senate and house of representatives the charter was prepared by john w maynard president judge of the northampton and lehigh districts lehigh's first president was henry coppee whose brother-in-law and president of lehigh's board bishop william bacon stevens decided leh igh should offer a traditional univers ity education including science and engineering as well as the liberal arts coppee had been a faculty member of the university of pennsylvania since 1885 where he taught foreign languages literature logic phil osophy and other courses in the hum anities coppee served in the mexican war after graduating from west point and taught at the academy for several years he also had some practical experience as an engineer while con structing the central georgia rail road the brown and white tuesday february 12 1991 lehigh university lu students settle lawsuit with city vol 98 no 28 ed get the camera out of here or i'll break it maintaining they were not interfer ing with the investigation and it was their right to be there as reporters chini said we're from the brown and white we're allowed to take pic tures according to witness peter harter 90 at that point stefko shoved chini to the ground according to witnesses chini's head hit the ground and he was then dragged on the pavement 10 feet to the median and handcuffed police took chini away in a patrol see settlement page 5 bethlehem police brown and white editors reach an agreement in 17-month dispute 28,1989 the case involving chini mcgowan and bethlehem police officer craig stefko began last september with a 9:30 p.m car accident at vine and morton streets in bethlehem stefko and another police officer were responding to a reported fight involving knives and sticks when catherine longenbach 27 of founta in hill pulled onto morton street from a stop sign at vine according to investigators stefko swerved but hit longenbach's vehicle and then slid into a parked car at the time of the incident chini told reporters that he had been leaving brodhead house soon after accident he said he approached the police officers to tell them where to find the owner of the parked car lehigh stu dent andrew baker 90 mcgowan who also happened to be at the scene of the accident had begun taking pictures according to witnesses stefko yell by erin byron brown and white news writer two brown and white editors accep ted 15,000 in an out-of-court settle ment with the bethlehem police for a federal case involving questions of police brutality and freedom of the press the settlement for the case was announced in an open court before u.s district judge franklin van antwerpen two weeks ago former brown and white editor nick chini 90 and photo editor scan mcgowan 92 accepted the offer and ended the 17 month legal dispute that began sept lu celebrates charter day by carolyn milhiser brown and white news writer b&w photo by jason stanford a record breaking crowd at stabler arena cheers on lehigh in their game against fordham this past saturday mfl department to add world view room by debby schwartz brown and white news writer the move of the modern foreign language department to maginnes hall along with the planned implem entation of the world view room in maginnes will bring together the dif ferent majors in the college of arts and science according to david w pankenier chairperson of the mod ern foreign language department the world view room will utilize satellite television and computers to help the modern foreign language department take a leap forward by it is impossible to expect that in the next 30 to 40 years that anyone can hold a job in education business or science and not encounter foreign language & & david pankenier chairperson of mfl presenting easy access to world news and feature videos from around the globe pankenier said he explained that the technology will first be implemented in the mod ern foreign language department and later will be used within international relations religion philosophy and journalism in the past only certain occupa tions promoted the necessity of know ing a second language pankenier said but it is impossible to expect that in the next 30 to 40 years that anyone can hold a job in education see mfl department page 5 science missile technology page 6
