b&w photo by sean mcgowan members of the interfraternity council at their meeting wednesday by mitchell drake brown and white asst news editor former lehigh university provost and internationally known chemist albert zet tlemoyer 75 died sunday night at muhlenberg hospital center zettlemoyer served as leh igh provost and vice presi dent from 1969 to 1980 and was well known as a surface and colloid chemist he came to the university in 1941 and went on to receive national and international recogni tion for his research zettlemoyer who publish ed more than 230 technical articles eight book chapters and held 10 patents was still working on research until two weeks ago he was conducting research in sinclair labora tory a building for which he led the fund-raising cam paign two decades earlier current lehigh university provost alan pense said leh igh has lost one of its most see chemist page 5 omr photo albert zettlemoyer b&w photo by jason stanford neither rain or hail or sleet or snow unperturbed by the cold weather eric naylor 92 leaps for a frisbee on the lawn in front of maginnes hall naylor is a member of lehigh's ultimate frisbee team rate the course and teacher from strongly agree or almost always to strongly disagree or almost never in a sealed manilla envelope they are taken to the hands of stephen kopetskie a teacher's assistant kopetskie gathers all the forms and sends them to the university of illinois a computer program statistically analyzes the responses and assigns a percentile rating to the results this means that in every group of 100 classes at lehigh one will be ranked at each percentile from 0 to 99 this percentile approach may place teachers into inappropriate levels if the lehigh faculty is composed entirely of great teachers 50 percent see evaluate page 4 student evaluations beneficial or futile by joe sellwood brown and white news writer most universities use student evaluation forms to assess and improve the quality of teaching and the use of these forms is based on the belief that students should have a say in the direction of their education according to some students and faculty there are many flaws with the instructor and course evaluation system 1.c.e.5 that is used at lehigh the forms are usually distributed on the last day of class response to the 20 or more questions ifc implements guest-list-only policy for closed parties by heather reilly brown and white news writer in observance of this weekend's closed party agenda the interfratern ity council has asked each house to create a guest list limiting the number of people entering the chapter house during their meeting last wednesday it is in our best interest to get this to work said jeff goldberg 92 ifc president to assure all in attendence thatthis weekend is just experimental in an effort to ease the impending social changes that will be proposed in the near future any student not on the party list will be prohibited from entering the house goldberg stressed that this restric tion will not apply to normal party weekends yet the ifc feels that such a step is necessary in preparation for future policies the ifc also stressed that failure to cooperate with this effort will be self defeating bob robeson assistant dean of stu dents said i support the ifc's efforts to resolve the issues that have put them at odds with the risk manage ment policies of their nationals unless the ifc develops a social policy that's going to allow fraternity chapters to comply with their nation al policies the future of a number of chapters could be jeopardized he said other issues brought up at the meet ing included the likelihood of a post rush this spring the spring rush would help fill some of the smaller pledge classes that inhabit the hill robeson said this would supple ment fall rush intake by continuing recruitment throughout the semest er eighteen out of the 30 fraternities are interested in spring rush he said mike barr associate directer of residential services praised mem bers of phi delta theta and kappa sigma fraternities at the meeting for questioning their house damage bills he said that there was 33,000 worth of damage and only two houses chec ked to see if the damage was accurate also a proposal was passed with no objection from the council to complete the junior interfraternity council's total separation from the ifc after it had made its own constitution last semester by giving the jifc autonomy it will give them more opportunity to determ ine what their own activities will be said robeson which he hopes will result in more participation from the jifc representatives because they will be able to do their own activities the brown and white vol 98 no 26 friday february 1 1991 lehigh university world-renowned chemist former lehigh provost dies
