fox pictured in the insert who was unable to attend the formal photographing dr w s landis dies september 15 dr walter s landis vice president of the american cyana mid company and a member of lehigh university's board of trustees died on friday septem ber 15 dr landis joined the faculty of lehigh immediately after his raduation serving as assistant instructor in minerology and metallurgy until 1907 he became assistant professor of metallurgy relinquishing his associate pro fessorship in 1912 he joined the american cynanamid company as chief technologist in 1922 he re ceived the doctor of science de gree from lehigh by 1923 he had become vice president of the american cyana mid company and at the time of his death he held a directorship of that company as well as four other chemical engineering con cerns in later years as an out growth of his industrial experi ence dr landis declared that chemists should be conversant with world politics and economics and the application of that belief made him a leading authority on world affairs the representatives of lehigh who attended dr landis funeral at sound beach connecticut on monday september 18 were rob ert herrick secretary of the alumni lynwood h geyer vice president of the alumni associa tion and dean a c callen and dean neil carothers for the ex ecutive committee of the univer sity kitain here next week for scl famous russian violinist plays here next week the studert concert lecture series will present the famous russian violinist robert kitain next wednesday evening starting at 8 15 p m trainees in the broughal high school auditorium lehigh students and their dates will be admitted free the admis sion price for the general public will be 50 cents this is kitain's first visit to the united states and it has been very successful he has already per formed twice at carnegie hall where he drew capacity audiences and the high acclaim of the press winner at the age of 10 of the glazounoff scholarship to the im jerial conservatory at st peters burg kitain graduated with the highest awards at sixteen he made a triumphal tour of russia wfhere he remained throughout the entire revolution only leaving there in 1926 since then kitain has toured the ex treme orient where he gave 186 concerts in manchuria china korea the phillipines and the dutch east indies going on to win fresh laurels in europe where while still in his twenties he was lauded by critics as one of the greatest violinists of our time tau betes elect four engineers mayer fox pieski and rengert are tapped last friday september 14 there was an informal meeting of the tau beta pi society after which the new pledges were tapped the ceremony took place in front of the monument of dr e h wil liams a professor of geology who founded tau beta pi in 1885 at the tau beta pi smoker for selection of new members pro fessor larkin head of the engi neenng department addressed the pledges of the engineering society and welcomed them into the so iety as candidates for initiation the present active members of tau beta pi are as follows bill bloecher david c kirk and fritz yon bergen these mem bers however will be leaving this october and the new pledges will take over the incoming men in clude bob mayer warren fox edward pieski and joseph ren gert next tuesday september 26 there will be an informal initia tion followed by 11 c formal initia tion on thursday september 28 after the new members have been initiated there will be a meeting held friday september 29 for the election of officers the tau beta pi society is an honorary society for engineers corresponding to the honorary so ciety of arts men the phi beta kappa society this society like that of phi beta kappa is a nat ional society and it requires a great deal of initiative to become a member lehigh is honored be cause tau beta pi was originally founded at lehigh soldier song writer 125 couples attend town-dorm dance the first social function of the town-dorm group — the inter dormftory town council dance — held last saturday evening in grace hall was from all reports a great social success the 110 to 125 couples which attended this semi-formal affair were pleasantly entertained by ken keeley and his lads from nine till one with such sweet tunes as i'll walk alone and sweet and lovely the hep cats had their day with losers weepers and trumpet blues five fraternities as well as drinker house opened their por tals to dates from saturday after noon at four o'clock until sunday afternoon at the same time the chaperones for the dance were dr and mrs claude beards lee and col and mrs easterday tone lehigh music society has rapid growth since 35 growing out of the capehart programs which were begun the first semester of the college year 1935-1936 was an organization which came to be known as the student concerts group this group assumed as its aim student appreciation of fine music this aim was supplemented by the goals of student expression and composition at first the organization used only the records in the capehart set which was presented to lehigh in 1934 by the carnegie corporation concerts were given regularly by the students the concerts were arranged and presented by stu dents who belonged to the group after the first four concerts the programs comprised student talent instrumental and vocal and stu dent compositions official recognition shortly after the school year be gan this group received official recognition as a student organiza tion and began a series of musical programs made up of student tal ent these concerts were given every sunday afternoon among the selections were the works of wagner mendelssohn sibelius strauss schumann bach and many other favorite compos ers various student and faculty artists participated in the presen tation of these programs among the faculty members taking part were dr k w lamson dr t e shields and dr c a shook in addition to individual presen tations concerts were given by the lehigh university glee club the glee club of the moravian college for women lehigh university symphony orchestra and bethle hem high school symphony or chestra a poll was taken by the society continued on page 2 | debating finals set for friday intramural debating probably the biggest of the summer semes ter's extra-curricular activities will swing into its finale this fri day evening september 22 1944 when six of the teams competing for lehigh's debating laurels and 100 in prizes meet in the final round the site of this last meeting will be room 466 packard lab with discussions scheduled to get under way at 7:15 o'clock all students are cordially in vited to attend enjoy and partici pate in these debates the topic resolved that compulsory mili tary education should be con tinued after the cessation of the present war is one which vitally concerns all of us and should prove interesting joe goth dedicates symphony to lehigh few students on me campus re member joe goth 44 before the army took him from the campus he was president of combined mu sic clubs and a member of delta sigma phi fraternity pfc goth stationed at camp shanks n v has been in the army for many months but he hasn't forgotten his alma mater the talented musician is at work on south mountain suite a symphony dedicated to lehigh university which he will present to the school upon its completion goth's accomplishments have not stopped there he has col laborated with frank loesser on the popular song pfc mary brown and several weeks ago he was heard on the major bowes program in last week's brown and white the lehigh blueprint for return ing servicemen was mentioned another part of it wtfll make its appearance on thursday evening at 10:30 p m in the form of a roundtable discussion on the g i law over station wsan allen town listen in it will prove interesting art exhibit has color hobson pittman the popular romantic painter of victorian in teriors will be guest artist at the lehigh art alliance exhibition opening at the lehigh university art gallery on sunday septem ber 17 the exhibition entitled victorian echoes will feature paintings centered upon the vic torian epoch in subject matter as a setting professor howland has gathered together a collection of victorian furniture and acces sories from bethlehem homes — the examples are both early vic torian and of the late or general grant period in order to create the atmosphere of the time mr howland planned a wall-less room in the center of the gallery com plete with brussels carpet hair cloth furniture marble top tables on one table rests the inevitable plush album and a stereoscope with views another table holds a rose-decorated parlor lamp a special feature will be a group of children's books which include a group of illustrated nursery books such as cinderella three bears and the three little kittens loaned by mrs robert horn of allentown a group loaned by miss mary knapp in cludes an amusing book of pas times for girls dated 1840 there are also a number of scrapbooks of the 19th century and a quaint collection of picture-cards of vari ous types — cards for reward of merit advertising cards which include some early cigarette cards cards for attendance at sunday school and various season greet ing cards with a few valentines blood donor registration today in lehigh library all lehigh students and mem bers of the faculty who intend to donate blood for the red cross may register today in the reading room of the library according to anthony fortosis bus oct 44 head of the blood donors campaign two red cross workers will be at the library from one o'clock until five-thirty appointments for the blood con tributions on wednesday october 4 1944 will be made then stu
