by ben fletcher brown & white news writer a group of senior mechanical engineers are building a car from scratch to enter in the inter collegiate mini baja east all-terrain vehicle competition in may the group is building a vehicle from start to finish and plans to enter in the contest which is sponsored by the society of automotive engi neers sae this will be lehigh's first entry in 10 years and the students are very excited at their opportunity to compete nationally group leader brian bankoski 91 said the competition involves a grueling three-day test period that evaluates the car's ability to sustain itself through mud bogs rough terrain tight cor nering and deep water without damage the idea is to present a vehicle geared toward the non-professional off-road enthusiast said bankoski one of the transmission design engineers marios koliopoulos 91 described the competition which will take place in may 1991 the first day will consist of static inspection style competition engineering design safety and cost report the second day is for the individual performance events including acceleration top speed braking deep water land maneuverability chain pull mud bog traction and suspension koliopoulos explained fifty percent of last year's competitors did not even make it to the final event where all of the schools take part in a two-hour endurance race complete with a lake which the car must maneu ver he said the mechanical engineers began brainstorm ing for the project last spring in their mechanical engineering 101 course the 19 students broke up into five different groups to tackle the design of the crucial elements of the car including steer ing transmission drive train body and steering each group had to decide which parts to purchase and which to manufacture keeping in mind that the simpler the car the less risk there is of having a breakdown and the easier it would be to repair said bankoski right now their biggest concern is that the actual car will jive with their computer-generated design everything is figured out to the millime ter on the computer but who knows what prob lems we will run across during actual construc tion said kol iopoulos we have a vision of a light car around 400 pounds making it easier for our flotation con cept with a large surfboard design which would affix to the undercarriage of the car said bankoski for propulsion the tire treads will act as a kind of water wheel funnelling water out of the tire well to act as a kind of water jet he said for more informaton concerning the vehicle or project check the m.e bulletin board on the third floor of packard lab master keys stolen from brodhead while most officials said this weekend's le high-lafayette activities seemed to go smoothly the residents of brodhead house faced an unexpected crisis when the master keys were stolen according to associate director of resi dence halls walter keiper someone broke in through a six-inch vent of the staff office door in brodhead house between 4:30 and 8 p.m on saturday the intruder stole most of the build ing's master keys from the safe in the office by 4 p.m sunday approximately 200 locks were replaced on all exterior and interior doors costing a conservative estimate of about 2,000 said keiper a plywood board now blocks the missing grate of the office door and all items of value have been removed from the staff office a gryphon discovered the vandalism of the staff office which is located in the main lobby at about 8:30 p.m and called the lehigh police keiper said the student residence security staff was immediately notified and called to set-up a sign-in desk to check for lehigh ids see brodhead page 5 lehigh-lafayette photos pages 6-7
