sigma alpha mv fraternity has been suspended from lehigh's campus for two years following a review of hazing charges brought against them by their national organization the fraternity may begin a recol inization process in 1993 and may return to lehigh's campus in the fall of 1994 assistant vice president of student affairs john smeaton said lehigh's administration is waiting for the final word from sammy's national organiza tion before lehigh continues its inves tigation into the hazing charges lehigh has not dropped the inves tigation he said we are working joe williams 93 left karen atkiss 92 and professor robert harson sing in front of maginnes 3 dax says undercover police not assigned to patrol the hill see cops page 7 monitor sayre park for reasons other than what i described dax said there was some confusion during greek week when an undercover female officer wearing her sorority letters was seen on the hill he said this officer was not assigned to the hill but responded to another officer's call for assistance dax said the officer was assigned to the lower campus to prevent and apprehend people committing vandalism to some of the academic buildings there was a police call over the radio that there was a fight in progress in sayre park and this officer responded to help the other officer that is how the officer got on the hill he said that's where all the confusion is lehigh lafayette ban wooden posts for football game by heather pauly brown and white asst news editor see posts page 3 a proposal banning the use of wooden goal posts at the annual lehigh-lafayette game was approved recently by presidents of both institu tions this change is to be implemented at the start of the fall 1991 semester to end injuries caused by fights during the traditional rush for the posts wooden goal no one wants posts are erec to end positive f^/z traditions the lehigh-laf john smeaton ayette game the asst vice president nation's oldest of student affairs college football rivalry we wanted to address the violence that erupted when the goal post came down said john smeaton assistant vice president of student affairs who served on the committee the committee suggested that steel goal posts in an h design rather than the single post style would be virtually indestructible making the traditional rush for the posts futile people won't be fighting if you take away the reasons for fighting smeaton said in order to preserve the tradition the group suggested presenting a wooden goal post crossbar to the captains of the winning team we want to continue the fun and the positive aspects of the game and address the negative said smeaton by mitchell drake brown and white asst news editor the recent rumor that undercover cops patrolled the hill during greek week has raised questions of whether the lehigh police are going too far but police chief eugene dax insists there is a role for undercover officers but only in special circumstances dax explained that plainclothes officers are used primarily to catch vandals or when a theft has been committed sometimes a uniformed officer or a police vehicle is not what you want to use to apprehend somebody he said dax cited a case where a fraternity had a problem with a possible arson and said the police used plainclothes officers for surveillance but he said we never did we never intend to and we probably never will use plainclothed policemen to -^^^_^^^___^_ gloria m bower ** rm l im ity libraries i the awchtlo/nart.noale i.,b no.ooba â– " t | # . brown and white vol 98 no 47 friday may 3 1991 sammy suspended for 2 years lehigh university house craig albert 91 dismissed the mis conception that graduating seniors are less affected by the suspension you join a fraternity because you're part of something he said and when you leave it doesn't leave the fraternity becomes a part of you and you become a part of it he said it's like a friend dying those are where some of the best times of my life have been and that people won't get out of it what i have is sad cliftseltzer 91 said i feel bad for freshman and sophomores maybe i won't have a place to party but they won't have a place to live they're taking away a part of me said albert when something you care about stum bles or falls schwartz said society reacts more they're taking away a part of me craig albert 91 negatively toward hazing and said hazing is totally unacceptable i hope people learn from things ljkr this if they don't it's a shame the brothers will not be allowed to live in the house while the charter is suspended smeaton said the chapter house will most likely be vacant for the fall but will be working closely with sammy to try to find occupants for the with the sigma alpha mv national to determine what information they have at this point we don't know if the investigation has revealed anything but we can't make any final decisions right now as soon as we get this information we can let the people know where we stand marsha duncan vice president of student affairs said until we under stand the facts which we don't have we can't respond to anything we should not let our imaginations do the walking william schwartz national execu tive director of the sigma alpha mv fraternity said it was certain that there was hazing he added it's a traumatic experience for people by jennifer provda brown and white news editor lifestyle getting out page 9
