crawl what is it why it's the astrp section of the brown and white this is a baby that can stand up and do things a super kid it was born in the brown and white office last monday evening four astrp students assisted its childbirth namely art christian sen dick smeltzer earl barton and phil mark a few more help ers could be used however to feed this growing prodigy anyone who can write help with photography or draw sketches is invited to join this group the fellows who are interested in the photography end of the job should get in touch with art christiansen room 132 and those who would like to help out in some other way should get in touch with dick smeltzer room 302 don't hide your light under a bushel if you are interested come out in starting this new astrp sec tion in the brown and white an army tradition is being carried on at lehigh when the astp was here last year they too had their own section of the newspa per with several experienced hands on the job steve korsen formerly of the new york herald tribune and harris green who once worked for the boston her ald were on the astp staff at that time anyone who is a little bashful about coming out for the astrp section of the brown and white should think about this little verse from gray's elegy written in a country churchyard full many a gem of purest ray serene the dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear full many a flower is born to blush unseen and waste its sweetness on the desert air 4 lf you can't fill his boots fill his veins lehigh blood quota calls for 250 pints on wednesday october 4 le high students will have an oppor tunity to help the red cross in one of its greatest undertakings — supplying the armed forces with blood plasma throughout its 80 years of exis tence the red cross has striven to relieve suffering a short time be fore the outbreak of the present conflict doctors proved the value of human blood plasma in saving lives when war broke out the red cross began building up a supply of human blood from which the plasma is made all americans are a part of the red cross it is therefore every american's duty to aid in this work of collecting blood on all fields of battle blood plasma has proved its value countless lives have been saved through the use of the plasma medical corps officers have sent countless pleas to the blood banks for more plasma no amount of stories and pictures can accurately stress the need for this fluid which means life for so many thousands of our brothers and buddies the least we can do is give as much blood as we possibly can donating blood is painless . . . has no after-effects anyone in good health between 21 and 60 weighing 110 pounds or more may do so those between 18 and 21 must obtain written consent of their parents or guardians no one may give more often than every eight weeks more than five dona tions are not permitted in one year all examinations and work continued on page 4 tickets now on advanced sale to public corsage-less semi-formal to feature keely band final arrangements for the last big social event at lehigh this semester the interdormitory-town council dance have finally been completed by the dance commit tee and tickets are now on ad vance sale the dance is to be held satur day evening september 16 and will last from 9 until 1 o'clock dress for the dance will be semi formal and no corsages will be worn the fraternity houses and drinker house will be opened for the guests thirteen piece orchestra ken keely and his popular 13 piece orchestra featuring terry o'day on the vocals will be there to help make the dance a success this band has played for dances at such places as the university of maryland muhlenberg temple bucknell sunnybrook dorney park and hershey before forming this band ken had gained great popularity sing ing and playing the drums with some of the country's leading bands he will accompany terry on the vocals at this dance dance chaperones chosen chaperones will be dr and mrs c g beardslee and col and mrs g w easterday house chap erones will be chosen by the var ious living groups tickets may be purchased by dorm men from harry kern in room 203 and by town men from bill boothby or any of the sec tion leaders soldiers may obtain tickets from their first sergeant and fraternity men from their presidents the price for soldiers is 1.80 and for civilians 3.00 during the advance sale which ends september 2nd after this date the price for civilians will be 3.50 doctor butt 9 after 21 years 9 retires frown health service dr raymond c bull director of the health service at lehigh uni versity and friend and adviser to lehigh men since 1923 is about to leave the campus for good dr bull is retired from active medical work and is about to move to delta colorado for his health he had originally planned to retire several years ago but when the astp units began coming to lehigh he felt that his services were needed and so graciously stayed on at the dispensary besides being responsible for the eeneral health of everyone asso ciated with lehigh dr bull was also the able and efficient faculty adviser of the alpha rho chapter of sigma chi fraternity all this not to mention his prominence in a few civic activities since he was a member of the rotary club and chamber of commerce and pres ident of the bethlehem motor club as well as president of the bethlehem medical club dr bull has been handling ev erything from physical exams and influenza epidemics to excuses for cutting classes since he himself inaugurated the university health service back in september 1923 originally he had but one nurse and a secretary to help him with the job of keeping lehigh healthy but as the dispensary grew slowly but surely under his guidance he acquired a physical of an eve ning's fun the mustard and cheese club feels that it has a competent cast bubbling with the situation which finds dascom dinsmore isolated in his wireless station in labrador a 1000 miles away from a beautiful woman 55 miles away from any women suddenly the good luck wind blows his way sir james fenton who breaks down in his airplane at the station seeks ref uge with his lovely fiancee ethel campion played by maureen torell dascom loses the first round . . . and the second round also when his own gilded fiancee comes to join him for the winter sports well you'll have to find out the rest cooperation keynote of packard lab meeting dean palmer tells men to shun snobbery the second of the series of all university meetings to be spon sored by arcadia went over today with a bang speakers from var ious campus societies dean pal mer and captain foster of the army unit on the campus ad dressed the gathering in crowded packard laboratory auditorium from 1 to 2 o'clock monday after noon chief speaker of the occasion was dean philip m palmer chair man of the three-man administra tive committee who stressed the need for cooperation between fac ulty students and reservists in all campus activities don't be snobs stated the dean don't you reservists look down your noses at the civilians and don't you civilians look down your noses at the reservists . . . snobbery is a very plebian institution and such plebianism is not tolerated here at lehigh bob moore is mc robert moore i e oct 44 president of arcadia was master of ceremonies for the occasion opening the meeting with a few introductory remarks outlining the purpose of these meetings and presenting arcadia's plan for con tinuing them first speaker on the program was william bloecher m e 044 who gave a short talk on arcadia the five-man committee on classes and outlined the progress of stu dent government on the campus he was followed by dean palmer after a duo of numbers by the band e edward gross e e feb 46 stressed again the importance of having an engineers club on the campus outlined the needs for such an organization and told what its activities would consist of and how it would work the club is to be affiliated with the lehigh valley engineers club as a junior organization following gross billy sheridan beloved coach of the soccer and mat teams and well named the maker of champions made an ap peal for more candidates for the soccer and football squads the challenge has been given to us and it's up to us you and the coaches to pick it up he stressed the fact that experience in the sport is helpful but by no means necessary and urged that every one who can possibly find time to try out do so continued on page 2 photo club enjoys illustrated lecture an illustrated lecture on koda chrome photography was given to the student photographic society by mr arthur arbogast of the bethlehem photocolor club and bethlehem steel in packard lab oratory on wednesday august 28 assisted by mr charles dennis of dennis photography shop mr ar bogast showed 200 of his collec tion of 800 colored slides he plans to show the rest of his collection some time in the near future before the meeting mr arbo gast mr dennis and professor stuart of the m e department were given a dinner at the hotel bethlehem by mr b k erdoss faculty adviser william a mur continued on page 4 two officers leave military department within the past week the mili tary contingent stationed at the university lost two of its officers when captain f d shires and lieutenant john noggle left to report to other stations and take up new duties on monday august 28th cap tain shires was transferred to the german prisoner of war camp at fort meade maryland while sta tioned on the campus captain shires served as property and transportation officer lt john noggle who was assis tant company commander of com pany a while at lehigh left fri day august 25th for baltimore maryland lt noggle will be sta tioned with the holobird signal depot in the 1342 nd service unit area no issue next week owing to the difficulties of com posing the b&w over the labor day holiday there will be no issue of the b&w next week brown and white the b&w salutes . . . the brown and white doffs its hat this week to two men who are winding up brilliant careers of service to lehigh dr raymond c bull director of the student health service and mr robert f lar amy assistant director of admissions dr bull has been friend and adviser to lehigh men for 23 years under his regime the student health service grew into one of the most efficient branches of the university as well as a fountainhead of good advice for all college troubles mr laramy has served his alma mater well as a most active alum nus and as assistant director of admissions incidentally he was a member of the first brown and white staff back in 1893 we wish many years of well-earned vacation to those two men who have done so much for lehigh
