straight aids is a threat to everyone in recognition of aids awareness week the psa has sponsored the distribution of free condoms and informa tion in university center from wednesday through today a representative from the health center was available to ensure that interested people can receive satisfactory ans wers to their questions about aids heterosexuals are in dang er too shank stressed quite a few people even see aids paged bynacikorzay brown and white news writer there are four truths about the diseases like aids said linda lobach of aids outreach in a lecture wednesday as part of aids awareness week sponsored by the progressive student alliance psa the first one is that the onset of any plague is always mysterious and terrifying it is also seen as the punishment of god on the sinners the second truth is that the first responses are usually ineffective the third truth is that in time scientific discoveries are made finally each plague finds its own solution lobach said she shares the same opinion with the rest of aids outreach a support group for those with acquired immune deficiency syndrome and their loved ones the outreach program shares a common vision one of creat ing an accepting community for aids patients the program offers educa tion support and initial place ment for homeless it also offers short-term financial aid according to the group's vision statement the group's buddy program involves a team effort because no one person can meet all the needs of a person with aids the worst disease in the world isn't aids but the feel ing of being unwanted unlov ed and abondoned by every one lobach said when someone is suffer ing he's got the priority lob ach said she said she decid ed to take action and started to help people with aids because of this reason associated with alds vol 97 no 40 the brown and white friday april 6 1990 classics dept to be dissolved lehigh university ence college has grown steadily over the years but we have to slow down a bit unfortunately as a result they are not able to allocate the funds necess ary to hire a professor the college has to be very cautious in terms of hiring she said for the health of the department it is better to disperse although it may cause an inconvenience for the pro fessors of the program assistant professor barbara pav lock who has been at lehigh since 1988 and will probably join the english department said that the spreading out of the professors will cause pro blems see classics page 2 by kristen kuck brown and white asst news editor there will no longer be a classics department at lehigh next fall accord ing to associate dean of the college of arts and science julie williams instead there will be a classics pro gram the core of major courses offered will remain the same according to department chairperson david small williams said the three professors of classics will be transferred to vari ous departments depending on their personal specialties in some cases the program professors may be in different buildings this change is a result of the board of trustee's desire to economize and to emmulate the great liberal arts schools like harvard and yale amongst other ivies yet takes a stance on the arts and sciences that more closely resembles mit and rpi williams said the classics depart ment has been looking for ways to improve but has had trouble streng thening the department williams who taught classics prior to her appointment to associate dean said i sense that the department has been suffering for a while with only three professors to teach the bulk of the classes offered in the department the department tried to hire a fourth professor but did not have the financial backing to do so williams said the arts and sci increase the efficiency of the college she said although they have issued no direct mandates or instructions just suggestions for examination lehigh has never figured out what to do with the college of arts and science professor of classics c rob ert phillips said lehigh has an absol utely superb arts and science college superb faculty and superb deans but the rest of the university doesn't know what to do with this phillips who has been at lehigh since 1975 was chairman of the depart ment for six years prior to small he said he will probably join the history department phillips said he wonders why the lehigh administration claims it wants weekend draws prospective minority students see minority page 4 by matthew brogowski brown and white news writer thirty-eight prospective minority students were introduced to almost all aspects of lehigh life over the weekend as part of minority prospective weekend at lehigh the candidates were housed by student volunteers from minority groups like the black students union leon caldwell 91 one of this year's spons ors said the purpose of the weekend is to give the minority students a feeling that lehigh is a place where they can fit in he said the weekend
