cent of the student body was in favor of reducing rcs registrar bruce correll said the committee on educa tional policy was aware the students were not in favor of shortening rcs however the emphasis of the proposal is on the entire package that would restructure the final exam period correll said the students should not view the change as a single event but as part of an entire package aimed at solv ing problems associated with lehigh's extraordinarily long finals period this package plan also includes shortening exam lengths to two-and-one-half hours and adding a fourth daily testing period correll said he believes the reasons for making these changes are misunderstood lehigh students are unhappy with the extended length of the fall semester which all ows only a few days between the end of exams and chris tmas these changes were pro posed to appease the students as well as the faculty in the past rcs has been only two days long because of the scheduling of the acad emic calendar and it hasn't been a problem correll said this proposal would just make a two-day rcs the norm volunteers take a walk for charity by beverly meindl brown and white news writer despite student opposition the committee on education al policy has unanimously vot ed to present a proposed reduction in the length of the reading-consultation-study period rcs at the next leh igh faculty meeting the proposal would reduce rcs from three days to two scheduling problems and student discontent have caus ed the committee to consider restructuring end-of-the-sem ester events such as the rcs period a survey conducted in february by the office of the registrar showed just 26 per prizes were awarded to walkers who were able to raise 50 or more a grand prize included two round trip tickets to any twa domestic flight the walk for america is a nationally known event sponsored by nutri system weight loss centers the volunteer house is composed of people who live together to do community service activities they are involved in two to three projects a month in the lehigh campus the community or other college cam puses project involvement is open to the lehigh community volunteer house received pledges from friends fraternity treasuries and bethlehem residents the amount of the pledges were determined by the distance each person walked we decided to do the walk because it was a good cause said jeanne white 91 volunteer house presi dent the groups that were walking were in good spirits despite the rain she added it was long kind of tiring but wit was also fun said jeremy markman 92 a member of the volunteer house markman said it rained on and oflj yet there was a big turnout by pia clemente brown and white news writer the rainy weather did not hinder several lehigh students from partic ipating in the the super cities walk for the national multiple sclerosis society in allentown on sunday members of the volunteer house joined 1,500 walkers on the 15 kilomet er course that started at muhlenberg college at 10 a.m toured through the streets and parks of allentown and back to the campus by 1 p.m the walkers raised a total of 123,000 through pledges and dona tions collected the members of the the brown and white tuesday april 3 1 990 lehigh university vol 97 no 39 art & architecture students move exhibit outdoors by erica crespi brown and white news editor selected works of seniors in the art and architecture department will be featured in the new girdler lounge and art gallery saturday but seven students decided to dis play their talents outdoors it's a silly thing to throw up drawings just because we're seniors said brad zizmor 90 as he was nailing together part of the 50-foot wall the group is planning to erect on the university center lawn to show what they learned from their lehigh education the group is building a springtime outdoor seating structure with platforms for students to sit on on nice days see architecture page 4 _, b&w photo by mike wetzel students walk to class from lower centennials education policy committee approves 2-day rcs period census reminder the bureau of the census will be taking the census on campus from april 2 to 18 students living on campus will be given individual reports to fill in and return to an enumerator students living off campus should have received regular census question naires in the mail around march 24 to 27 which were to be mailed back by april 1 for questions or assistance on census questionnaires call 1 800-1 990 inside news physics department receives 150,000 grant page 2 arts & leisure german house treats lehigh to kameval page 9 sports lu pitcher dave norwood spotlighted page 1 6
