rabbi relives experience in south africa by andrea yonke brown and white news writer rabbi brian walt describ ed scenes from his life in south africa with the goal of sharing a little bit about the history and the experience of jews in south africa sponsored by lehigh's hil lel society monday's lecture was titled facing the 19905 jews and south africa walt was born and raised in seaport south africa a sub urb of capetown he was a member of the national unio n of south african students because i was white not black at the same time i was marginal because as a jew i was not completely trusted the lecture was divided into three parts the history of the jewish community in south africa its relationship to apartheid and how the com munity has dealt with the issue and the present and the possibilities for jews in a post apartheid democratic south africa the south african jewish community is an incredibly identified committed and which is a national student anti-apartheid organization he is also founder and edi tor of strike a newspaper which looks at the issues of the relationship between the jews and the struggle against apartheid to explain this he used his own life he described being a jew in south africa as being caught between great priv ilege and a scary marginal ty he explained as a white i lived in an upper-middle class suburb all kinds of opportunities available just the brown and white vol 97 no 38 friday march 30 1990 a&s college proposes changes lehigh university the three options b c and d respectively with a representing the current system all have their advan tages and disadvantages as was expressed by both faculty and stu dents at monday's meeting in option b the college distribution requirements are simplified the flex ibility of the program increases and there is an emphasis on experimental learning this allows students to take a wider variety of courses and impro ves the intellectual climate in the college option c moves for four courses in each semester of the freshman year see a&s page 2 and five courses for every semester after that this would allow students to adjust better to the new environment this option also requires a freshm an seminar incorporated with a&s 1 two semesters of english composition would still be required but one would be taken the second semester of the freshman year and the other in the sophomore year option d is most favored by the majority of the department but some feel it is a very radical adjustment all courses would be four credits and floor for discussion some changes that may be seen in the present curriculum include a reduced number of requirements a more focused freshman seminar pro gram and better timing of require ments allowing students to take required courses when they best can three alternatives to the current plan have been created but associate dean of the college of arts and sci ences john gatewood said after the proposals all go through their proper channels there won't be a change until the fall 1991 semester at the earliest by jason greenblatt brown and white news writer the college of the arts and science is seeking alternatives to the current undergraduate curriculum a task force was formed within the college with three goals making the freshman year more special foster ing a more intellectual ambience in the college and attracting and retain ing the kind of students they want in an open meeting to all faculty and students on march 26 task force chairman peter beidler professor of english presented options the com mittee came up with and opened the shop steward but he said after an hour they were talking major changes in the contract were the reduction of monthly blue cross blue shield health insurance pay ments from 27 per month to 12 and an increase in the number of raises within the contract period from two every 18 months to three yearly raises in addition the amount of the raises were slightly increased in the new contract all other provisions in the contract remained the same the workers said they were satisfi ed with the new contract and were relieved that a strike was successfully avoided one worker said no one wanted to strike and now they could afford the lowered insurance rates in the new contract one worker said she was happy she did not have to go out and get a part time job because the contract was strike for ogden allied by erica crespi brown and white news editor the ogden allied workers accepted a new three-year contract wednesday three days before the expiration of their old contract there were smiles and laughter in packard laboratory auditorium as the 109-12 vote was announced affirm ing union representative chuck bernhard's predictions that the reneg otiated contract would be ratified bernhard and the workers negotiat ing team met with ogden allied repres entatives for approximately three hours before the meeting the team asked for lower health insurance payments and higher raises at the request of the unsatisfied wor kers at last saturday's meeting where they overwhelmingly rejected the old contract at first ogden allied was not willing to give in said negotiator
