price 5 cents bethlehem pa wednesday july 26 1944 vol lii — no 5 if dance plans are now complete grace hall to open with romig's music the interfraternity ball le high's first big summer dance this year will be held upstairs in grace hall on saturday evening august 19 1944 from ten to one the dance committee is composed of the officers of the interfrater nity council namely bill bloecher president bob moore vice-pres ident bill day secretary and paul franz treasurer this group met last week to complete final arrangements for the important affair the music will be supplied by harry romig and his orchestra who is well known throughout the lehigh valley for his danceable ar rangements his 14 man band will be given that indispensible fem inine touch by an attractive girl vocalist there will be no special decora tions on the dance floor except for the university banner which is traditionally hung behind the band stand the tickets will be 2.50 plus 50 cents tax or 3.00 per couple they will be sent out to the var ious living groups for distribution although they may be purchased continued on page 4 next week sees start of lively debating meet the first big extra-curricular event of the summer semester will swing into high gear on friday evening august 4 when the eight teams competing for lehigh's de bating laurels and 200 in prizes meet in their first round the site of this first meeting has not as yet been determined but the student lounge in packard lab will probably serve in this ca pacity under the present arrangements four teams will meet each other on successive friday evenings alter nating until each group has met the other at least once the match ing of wits is to begin promptly at seven-thirty o'clock and each dis cussion halted at the end of one half hour all students are cordially invited to attend enjoy and participate in these debates the topic re solved that the abolition of the fraternity system is necessary for the welfare of the college student is one which vitally concerns every town dorm and fraternity man reserve your friday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 come to see intramural debating done in the inimitable lehigh style tuberty continued on page 4 professor eaton . , . lafayette professor lectures to asme the lettish student chapter of the american society of mechan ical engineers held its first meet ing of the semester thursday july 20 in packard laboratory with prof paul b eaton of lafayette recently returned from china who talked of the many advantages of membership in the society and the work of the society abroad professor eaton spoke about his experiences among the chinese engineers and expressed complete confidence in the loyalty of china to the united nations when asked about his most distressing exper ience professor eaton said that it did not occur in china but when he returned to the united states and heard the radio commentators announcing the possible with drawal of china from the war after the meeting the assembly adjourned to the balcony of pack ard laboratory where prof f v larkin of the mechanical engin eering department demonstrated the department's collection of model steam engines 158 air corps men to start august 2nd men here under aaf training program ; will participate in all student activities dean philip m palmer announced yesterday that lehigh was cer tain of receiving 158 air corps reservists august 2 and that there was a possibility that over 200 reservists would arrive on that date all of the reservists will be from the third service command a large number of them coming from bethlehem and allentown the group is made up entirely of men under eighteen who are going to nter the army air corps training program as soon as they become eighteen b coming directly from civilian fe these men will be uniformed at lehigh and barracked in rich ards house dining facilities will be provided at lamberton hall the army reservists will occupy half the hall and civilian students now using lamberton hall facili ties will be served in the other half the reservists will be command ed by colonel george easterday aided by his staff capt joseph foster adjutant capt h i shires supply and transportation officer capt r c sumner instructor and lt john noggle instructor according to col easterday these students will be allowed to participate in extracurricular ac tivities such as the brown and white and mustard and cheese robert mayer editor of the brown and white said yesterday that all interested reservists would toe wel comed to the b&w staff courses given the reservists starting aug 7 will be similar to those given the astp unit the men will have classes separate from civilian students and will probably remain here for two 12 week semesters rudiments of drill will be taught the reservists by the regular army men stationed here at first the reservists will drill separately from the rotc but as the reservists catch up with the civilians their drill programs will be combined the first army college training unit came to lehigh in july 1943 and their numbers increased un til by the fall of that year they totaled 1400 during the first of april the entire unit was sud denly withdrawn except for 13 reservists who left in july town - dorm dance planned the joint town - dormitory dance committee met in the lounge of drinker house last thursday at seven o'clock and it was decided that the dance will be held at grace hall on sept 16 fraternity men and the air corps reservists who are expect ed here soon will be invited to the dance an advance sale of tickets will be held until sept 2 during which the price of admission will be 2.40 after that date tickets will be 3.60 the orchestra which will play for the dance has not yet been definitely named but the commit tee promises a really good one herman miller and his sylvanians is one band that has been sug gested don shettel ch e feb 46 harry kern arts june 45 and tom mcnamara e e feb 47 of the dorm group and bill reit erman arts june 45 of the town section were present at the meet ing further plans for the dance will be made at another meeting of this committee at seven o'clock tomorrow evening this dance promises to be the biggest and best social event of the season at lehigh so come out freshmen and upperclassmen and get your tickets for the dance early dean fever a three-act farce by mark reed was a great hit when it was produced on broadway and m&c intends to duplicate broadway's record though in different surroundings the show will be put on for three successive nights the dates being tentatively set for either august 24 25 and 26 or august 31 sep tember 1 and 2 prof a a rights is starting casting this friday at 4 o'clock in drown hall he will also hold an other casting session on tuesday august 1 at 4 o'clock in drown hall all men are urged to try out for both acting parts and for be hind-the-scenes work to be a member of the m&c club is a great honor and this is one op portunity for achieving a worth while goal and having a good time doing it m&c shows in the past have always been worthwhile to attend and this one will be good also if there is a good response from the student body it's up to you fel lows — let's go there is also a call for musi cians to play between the acts all men who are capable and inter ested should appear at subject agreeable to the , i committee since the retirement of president williams as head of the univer sity the deans of the three colleges have taken over the executive duties vacated by him dean philip m palmer of the college of arts and science has been appointed chairman of the three-man com mittee composed of himself dean neil carothers of the business col lege and dean a copeland callen of the engineering college these men in addition to their duties as deans of their various col leges have taken over all the du ties of the president of the com mittee with a certain split in ac tivities dean callen is in charge of all negotiations with the army specialized training service be cause of his position in charge of the education of the men sent to the campus dean carothers has been select ed to take charge of the athletic administration of the university mr caraway acting director of athletics will still be in direct charge of the sports field but should some matter arise which student chemical society starts 66th year at lehigh the chemistry society one of the oldest societies of lehigh univer sity was founded in 1878 by professor william h chandler head of the chemistry department at that time the society was called the nat ural history society and membership was open to all the students it was then sponsored by the chemistry department as it is today each year the society gave four lectures to the public but despite this the society waned and later became dormant one interesting collection came from this former i society however and that is the i warner collection of birds in 1902 the natural history so ciety was revived by prof alpha a diefenderfer and called the chemistry society the society started out by taking dues from : the chemistry laboratory but this 1 policy was not very successful and now the money is gotten by selling membership cards the first banquet was held in 1916 in the present day physical chemistry laboratory this ban quet was held amid a delightful chemical atmosphere — the food be ing served in evaporating dishes and glass beakers about the year 1920 the attendance had grown to such an extent that the society princeton on august 19 lehigh has been invited to participate the athletic department wants to enter a team or at least a small group that will participate leo prender gast varsity track mentor will
