ies at the university center main desk the survey's primary ques tions dealt with the number and time length of final exam inations and the length of the rcs period preliminary results show much agreement by the facul ty and students to shortening the actual time of each final examination from three hours to two-and-a-half hours the students and faculty were also highly in favor of adding a fourth examination block per day a change that would reduce the final exam period from the existing 11 to nine days by jerome murphy brown and white news writer reducing review consul tation and study rcs period to one weekend changing fin al examinations to two-and-a half hours and adding a fourth daily testing period are all recommended by the results of a survey conducted by the office of the registrar according to registrar bruce correll the survey was well-received with 20 per cent of the student body and 65 percent of the faculty sub mitting opinions the survey was posted on the network server and distributed in a limited number of hard cop lehigh second in donations see donations page 4 convey to seniors through the senior class gift campaign senior class gift campaign publicity chairperson jenny gordinier 90 said by making a commitment to donate 100 to lehigh over a five-year period seniors will give a vote of confidence to the school and indicate their satis faction with the education they receiv ed gordinier said the difference between this money and the money donated through other channels is that in five years when the million for 1989 according to the september 1989 issue of asa packer people a newsletter published quart erly to provide information about pro gress at lehigh 17.4 million came from alumni according to the newslet ter another donation comes to lehigh in the form of the annual senior class gift campaign somewhere down the road and hopefully in the near future we will definitely look back and value the education we have received at lehigh this is the message that we want to by meussa campinell brown and white news writer jack fulton assistant vice presi dent of development said that lehigh takes pride in receiving contributions from 60 percent of its alumni annually this number is second in the nation among large universities dartmouth college is the only school that receives a larger donation from its alumni to receive a donation from six out of 10 of its alumni is a tremendous vote of confidence given to the university fulton said we just want the alumni to look back at their education and realize how great it was he said of the 28 million donated last year the money that did not come from alumni came from corporations foun dations friends parents and the gov ernment fulton added these general donations are direc ted toward financial aid projects building improvements and projects such as the new rauch business cent er fulton said a major portion of lehigh's budget comes from donations it receives each year this money totaled over 28 burning candles start small fire in sorority house by dianne carun brown and white editor in chief the bethlehem fire department responded to an alarm early saturday afternoon at gam ma phi beta sorority to extinguish a fire started by burning candles the fire which was extinguished before the department arrived by a former lehigh stu dent caused only limited damage according to mary calvo bethlehem's clerk of accounts junior regina borgia the room's occupant said she had been burning candles on a shelf underneath the windows which were open i left the room for two minutes and the candles caught the curtains because of the wind borgia said jackie montana 91 who lives across the hall from borgia said she came out of her room to see smoke coming from borgia's room we had to pull the alarm the smoke detector didn't see fire page 5 b&w photo by sean mcgowan a bethlehem fire department truck leaves the scene of the fire at gamma phi beta sorority saturday the brown and white tuesday february 13 1990 lehigh university vol 97 no 29 although an extra daily examination period would be added students would not be required to take more than two exams in one calendar day there was wide disagree ment in opinion between stu dents and faculty concerning the length of rcs according to survey results approximately 80 percent of the faculty found it accepta ble to reduce the number of days devoted to rcs while a high percentage of the stu dents who responded thought the study period should be as see survey page 4 survey data show differences in student and faculty opinion survey results each number represents the percentage of faculty f or students s who found the option acceptable f s two hour exams 58 69 two and one half hour exams 70 54 three hour exams 80 42 reduce rcs 80 26
