m&c plans new style summer play tentative title is lehigh in review at last wednesday's meeting the mustard and cheese club pro posed a startling new technique for presentation of its summer play of which a tentative title has been offered as lehigh in re view for many years past the club has encouraged original produc tions and the recall of prom trotters knights in armor and boys in babeland gives challeng ing evidence of cultivation of le high talent the new production is considered on the basis of the un usually planned ingenious pro duction of projected scenery used in pelleas and melisande which the mustard and cheese club with the dramatic workshop pro duced in 1938 employing project ed scenery with a musical score and radio technique for the actors the club intends to make its play ultra-modern to the last word play's origin the origin of lehigh in re view goes back to william dukek 39 and dave hughes 40 when a musical show was planned showing the traditional growth of lehigh the script re veals in a humorous way the founding of lehigh the begin nings of the brown and white the burr the university in its struggle to survive the early ath letic supremacy with lafayette and the constant rounding out of the university as it is today committees dave gerb arts feb 46 and dave simons ch.e feb 46 who performed so excellently for the cabaret nite in the spring production are in charge of the musical preparation john hanley continued on page 4 helstrom wins three honors eighteen prizes in scholarship were awarded to undergraduates at lehigh university's 78th com mencement exercises six fresh men four sophomores and six juniors received these prizes while one sophomore carl wil helm helstrom of easton was awarded three of the honors the awards were distributed as follows wilbur scholarship to the highest ranking sophomore carl wilhelm helstrom easton mathematics first prize elwood franklin seasholtz allen town second prize richard axtell craig maplewood n j english prize sherman grossman sass allentown wilbur prizes sopho more year in mathematics and physics both to carl wilhelm helstrom easton williams junior prize also the williams junior prize in english composition to jay richard lee bethlehem electric al engineering prize to the high est ranking sophomore in electric al engineering robert daniel wal lick washington d c william h chandler chemistry prizes to the highest ranking student in each class in chemistry and chem ical engineering freshman year continued on page 4 i f council plans gala august dance informal dance scheduled for august 19 in grace hall dorm and town plan later ball plans for lehigh's two big summer dances became more concrete early this week as committees were appointed to arrange both the interfraternity ball and the combined town-dorm dance at its monthly meeting last monday evening the interfraternity council chose saturday august 19th as the date of the proposed semi-formal robert w moore 1.e feb 45 william f bloecher e.m oct 45 and paul j franz bus oct 44 comprise the executive committee grace hall has been selected as the site of the affair which will probably feature harry romig's orchestra plans for the dance to be spon sored jointly by the dormitory and town councils are still in the embryonic stage but a commrttes consisting of william reiterman arts oct 44 william boothby 1.e feb 46 harry kern arts june 45 donald shettel ch e feb 46 and thomas mcnamara e.e feb 47 will hold its first meeting on thursday to select a date in all probability they will choose a date sometime in late september and hold the dance in grace hall although no definite informa tion is as yet available it is prob able that drinker house will be opened to dates of the dorm men for the september dance although the i f ball will not be of the elaborate house-party proportions of pre-war days it is expected to be one of the big so cial events of the summer most of the extra-added attractions such as the maennerchor tea dance and the big house dances that were packed into the house party week-ends of yore are war casualties but the general upswing that campus activities have ex perienced of late makes it likely that a big day will be built around the dance one event already on tap is a baseball game with drew university at taylor field on the afternoon of the dance pi delta epsilon pledges four men the tapping of willard booth by william pettit don shettel and albert rights faculty ad visor on monday july 17 for pi delta epsilon the national hon orary journalism fraternity puts another rising tide marker on the increased activity of honorary so cieties on campus pi delta epsilon was founded december 6 1909 at syracuse university at first a local so ciety to serve the students who published the daily orange it soon became a national fraternity at the university of nebraska in 1910 women became eligible twenty-seven years later at george washington university in 1937 founded on the idea of service pi delta epsilon through its pub lication the epsilog edited by wallace biggs professor of jour nalism now on leave from the university has striven to further the high educational aims of col lege journalism and the better un derstanding between professional and collegiate journalists town men elect huyett dick huyett m.e june 46 was elected president of the town group at a meeting held in drown hall july 11 dick staley m.e oct 46 was elected vice-presi dent and bill boothby 1.e feb 46 secretary-treasurer huyett appointed bill reiter man arts june 45 and bill boothby town group representa tives on the town-dorm dance committee it was decided that for the duration sectional officers would not be elected but that two representatives would be sent to council meetings from each dis trict a new system of finances was introduced at the meeting each district must raise a definite pro portion of money to help pay council expenses it was decided that this would be an improve ment over the old system of cen tral collection bill reiterman who was elected sports manager will organize a sports program the town men will probably compete with the dorm sections in this program the college blood donor pro gram proposed by arcadia was discussed and the group decided to cooperate by giving blood tan beta pi engineering honorary started in 85 grace ranks first in list of top income men the treasury report of highest salaried men in the united states listed eugene g grace executive of bethlehem steel company as the highest paid man in the coun try grace's income for 1942 was 537,724 made up of 180,000 in salary and 357,724 in bonus this top wage earner is a graduate of lehigh and is now serving the university as chairman of the board of trustees most of this income will be taken by the gov ernment in taxes tau beta pi founded at lehigh in 1885 by professor edward wil liams then head of the mining department here at lehigh is to the engineer wlhat phi beta kappa is to the classical student the first member of the fraternity was irving a heikes valedic torian of the class of 1885 later in the year two more members of the class were initiated today the society is recognized as one of the vital factors in the life of the engineering schools of america and —^— — — — -—^^—^^— — -—^^— — — he membership has increased to 32,000 comprising 70 active chap open to upperclassmen to be eligible for membership a junior must be in the upper eighth of his class a senior in the upper fifth those who meet the requirements are elected to the fraternity on the basis of the vari ous qualities which are attributed to an ideal engineer eligibility for tau beta pi demands not only high marks but also good charac ter and a participation in various extracurricular activities the reason tau beta pi was continued on page 2 interdorm council plans for dance bob mayer ch.e june 45 at a meeting of the interdorm coun cil held in the drinker house lounge last thursday appointed a committee to negotiate with the town group representatives on the proposed town-dorm dance mayer who is president of the group appointed evening the le high photographic club held its re-organization meeting during the course of the meeting the elec tion of new officers took place willard murray m.e 45 now heads the organization with john hanley 1.e 46 vice-president and allen dicke m.e 45 secre tary-treasurer mr erdos of the mechanical engineering depart ment will serve as the club's fac ulty advisor there will be a meeting of the club this coming wednesday eve ning july 19 at seven o'clock in drown hall an invitation is ex tended to all students to attend the meeting membership does not involve any financial obliga tion students urged to use library the library seems to have been rather neglected since the ast left last march the average number of attendances has fallen to 221 per week — less than one student per hour contrary to past actions fresh men are using the library without the violent urgings of their pro fessors however mr leach and his librarians are urging more students to make use of the excel
