slouka responds to czech revolution by aries claire keck brown and white news writer professor zdenek slouka speaking immediately after his recent trip to czechoslovakia outlined his hopes for his native country and some of its outstanding problems in his lecture tuesday in sinclair auditorium slouka's appearance is the first part of the waterhole ii series of informal talks about timely local national and international matters sponsored by the friends of the lehigh university libraries slouka a lehigh faculty member since 1972 and acting chairman of international studies recently return ed from a week-long visit to prague the brown and white lehigh university friday february 2 1990 lu issues 3-year crime reports vol 97 no 26 by jason greenblatt brown and white news writer lehigh recently released its second annual campus crime statistics report in accordance with pennsylvania state act 73 the college and univers ity security information act act 73 requires all colleges and universities in pennsylvania to publish criminal statistics and make them readily available to students faculty staff members and prospec tive applicants the statistics are available in a brochure entitled working together a guide to safety brochure which is available through the dean of stu dents office passed in november 1988 act 73 is a result of state legislation introduced in harrisburg by the parents of jeanne clery a lehigh student who was mur dered on campus in 1986 the statistics which are available in their entirety at the deans of stu dents office include the number of offenses committed in 1987 1988 and 1989 and the frequency rate of each crime per 1000 persons according to the statistics on part i offences referring to major crimes there have been no homocides at lehigh since 1986 and two forcible rapes have occurred one in 1987 and one in 1989 larceny theft has risen from 142 counts in 1987 to 166 in 1989 while assaults have fallen from 22 accounts to 14 in 1989 there was one robbery and motor vehicle theft 14 assaults and 28 burglary reported next to larceny the most common offenses are those for vandalism 115 reports and liquor law violations 108 reports despite these high counts the rates have actually fallen from 1988 by approximately 5 percent before act 31 there were only 68 liquor law violations 9.49 charges per thousand students in 1987 whereas there were 108 violations in 1989 15.61 per thousand students the number of reports of driving under the influence of alcohol dui drunkenness charges and disorderly conduct charges doubled within the last two years see crime page 5 the full-time equivalent the num ber of violations among the total pop ulation of faculty staff and students has fallen from a 7,199 offences in 1988 to 6,919 in 1989 assistant vice president of student affairs john smeaton said the legisla tion has gained substantial credit nationwide and is being considered for federal legislation it is based around three basic inter active elements education preven tion and response it also emphasizes as essential for preserving safety on campus education is the first priority stu dents can do a lot to help themselves black history month celebrates culture by kristen kuck brown and white asst news editor black history month traditionally celebrated during february acknowledges the achievements and contribu tions of african-americans the theme for this year's celebration at lehigh is strengthening the ties that bind the celebration began last night with the african american students gathering together to sing lift every voice and sing juniour leon caldwell umoja house gryphon said dr rita smith wade-el also spoke about umoja as a necessary for survival at the night's opening ceremony katrina young 91 president of the black student union bsu said black history month is an educational tool for the entire lehigh community by which other students at lehigh can see what black culture is like and see what contributions people of african descent have made in america she added that it has special importance to lehigh because it is a step in getting the lehigh community to see month page 5 b&w photo
