pi mu epsilon elects men at banquet tonight pi mv epsilon mathematics honorary society will elect four new members at the initiation meeting to be held this evening at 8:30 at the home of dean tom linson fort faculty adviser to the lehigh chapter and president of the national organization those men who will be elected are rowland b miles walter kluck seemon h pines and robert wallick plans for the coming semester will be discussed and plans laid for continuing the society offi cers will also be elected for the approaching term present offi cers are ralph a evans ep j'44 president carl helstrom ep j'4s treasurer who has left school for the navy and edwin t pieski che j'4s secretary bill bloecher bob moore paul franz fritz yon bergen and dave kirk were the five men elected last thursday may 24 by the student body to fill the positions of the arcadia student government committee replacing the regularly elected class officers of each class four of the men will just continue in their present positions having been on the committee previous to the election paul franz is the only new mem hor ronlopi'rff rolnvi ft-irone iirvio duated in june high percentage vote the election one of the most representative in the history of lehigh elections showed almost 65 of the undergraduate student body voted 203 ballots were handed in 7 of which were not valid for reasons of duplication lack of signature and the like the percentage was figured out on a basis of 302 enrolled men bill bloecher receiving the highest number of votes will re main chairman of the committee fred attaway bob mayer ernie gerlach bill day bob treser bill reiterman bill pettit les little james golden anthony fortosis and frank carr the others on the ballot received rec ognition in that order of those mayer day treser reiterman and pettit will take over in oc tober since all those elected will graduate before that time mayer will be chairman those five men were the only others on the bal lot that will not leave in october odk-cyanide hold joint dinner meet last night at 6:30 omicron delta kappa senior honorary ac tivities society and cyanide jun ior honorary held a joint initia tion banquet at the sun inn faculty members of odk includ ing prof larkin dr beardslee dean congdon prof doane and mr smiley were also present mr smiley director of admis sions was guest speaker for the occasion he is retiring as fac ulty advisor to odk and his speech was in the nature of a farewell address anthony fortosis bus 044 and james kleckner arts 044 were initiated into odk in drown hall at 5:30 while the cyanide initi ates were initiated at the sun inn before the banquet the men taken in by the junior honorary include robert b rosener che j'4s sanford w wilson che j'4s cornelius j lindholm ce j'4s frank marsh ee j'4s was unable to attend since he has left lehigh to join the navy over 200 lehigh men enjoy magoun at all university banquet last wednesday evening over 200 members of the lehigh student body and faculty were treated to a most thoroughly enjoyable evening in the main dining hall of the hotel bethlehem at the all-university banquet principally due to the guest speaker dr f alexander magoun at the speaker's table were dr magoun president williams dr beardslee dean wray h congdon e robbins morgan paul j franz chairman of the comittee bob moore president of arcadia david return from the lafayette baseball game the master of ceremonies introduced moore immediately upon his ar rival and bob talked on lehigh past present and future he urged students now on the cam pus to help keep and preserve lehigh for what she represents in behalf of those who will come back he emphasized that courses may be dropped faculty members may leave intercollegiate athletics may decline and other major changes may take place but there will still be student spirit student government banquets dances flagpole days and other lesser im portant phases of campus life which are the traditions of le magoun the main speaker dr magoun assistant professor at the massachusettes institute oi technology was introduced by paul franz and spoke on the topic preparation for marriage his talk included many aspects of marriage and gave suggestions for couples in achieving happiness control of emotions in pre-mari tal relations must be practiced by couples in these times fear is 46 seniors may graduate the following are eligible to receive degrees at the university graduation scheduled for sunday june 18 there are forty-six all told six from the arts four from the business and will enroll lehigh is almost certain of hav ing at least 100 freshmen enroll for the coming summer semester according to robert e laramy assistant director of admissions up to the present time 70 men have paid their entrance deposit and 40 others have been accepted for admission these figures are by no means final or some of the men who have been okayed may decide to accept membership in either the navy's v-12 or the army's reserve program it is also possible that some requests for admission may come in in the few weeks left before the end of the semester most of the matriculating stu dents are seventeen year olds who will be able to remain for only one or two semesters although there are several men honorably discharged from the armed serv ices who previous to their mili tary duty attended colleges other than lehigh approximately three-quarters of the new men will be enrolled in the engineer ing school with every department receiving new students although most of the enrollees are equally divided between the mechanical chemical and electrical engineer ing departments not the basis of success empha sized dr magoun in general the speaker did not advise marriage befose going to war but he made it clear that the couple had to decide themselves and should face the possibilities of casualties and death before making a de cision dr magoun went on to say we punish ourselves unconsciously for whatever we do that is not up to our standards value of stand ards is the important thing con tinued the professor he pointed out that often the parents are at fault for many false impressions about sex imprinted on a child's mind sex must be explained to the child fully and clearly in de cent language and not made taboo he commented on the import ance of religious compatability mental compatability the neces sity of husband and wife sharing responsibilities of the home and ways and means of avoiding quar rels mutual emotional stability is a criterion for the young couple the great unfitness for marriage is due to emotions that never grew up mutual background and out look are main points in deciding the right person for a partner in life the final test is mutual long-run sex attraction — a neces sity for a happy lasting marriage 4 hours of questions dr magoun spoke formally for an hour and after a ten minute intermission answered the stu dents questions for four hours during this question period many puzzling questions concerning sex were answered and individual problems cleared up by the guest speaker the listeners showed great interest and participation in this question and answer period dr magoun referred his audience to his book called balanced per sonality a sequel to his prep aration for marriage copies of the latter were sold for fifty cents to all persons interested and im mediately sixty co p i*e s were bought and orders for about forty more were taken by dr magoun the all-university banquet proved a grand success and well worth the time and effort spent on it dr magoun proved an agreeable and humorous speaker and was whole-heartedly accepted by the student body price 5 cents bethlehem pa wednesday may 31 1944 vol li no 43 arcadia committee has one new man bloecher moore yon bergen kirk re-elected franz replaces evans epitome slated to appear on campus late in june according to fritz yon bergen editor of the 1944 epitome the yearbook scheduled to appear the early part of next month will not make its appearance on the cam pus until the end of june in spite of the fact that all copy has been at the printers for almost two months no page or galley proofs have been sent back it is believed that the first proofs will arrive this weekend and that the book will be definite ly completed by the end of the month providing that all goes well with the final printing m & c show big success on friday evening last the mus tard and cheese club rounded out its year's activities at the civic theatre when it presented to a lehigh and town audience a cabaret nite of fun there is some doubt whether the fireman did save the child in fireman save my child the tag of the play was scrambled into a fun ad libbing scene which the audience felt was justified as a poetic jus tice end to any melodrama of the 1890's robert mayer the villain raised the curtain and closed it with a villainy that was superb who could ask for more exciting escapes than two fisted showdown of chester the hero played by bill reehl fritz yon bergen played the heroine daisy in a daze but with good excuse as he picked up the script the eve ning before the show when he substituted for john harris the cabaret part of the evening was pushed around by v war ren fox but a good time was had by all as a whirlwind of acts flashed across the stage david simon and dave gerb two excel lent musicians gave first class musical support with piano and accordion background to the specialty dancers of the gudie school who presented a variety of the old and modern dances thelma badel followed with some fine acrobatic dancing everyone continued on page 3 drinker house set to open next semester dorm opens to civilians after year's absence brown and white after an absence of almost a year lehigh students will return to living quarters on the campus when drinker house the univer sity's largest dormitory reopens at the beginning of next semester dean wray h congdon an nounced last week that the build ing which accomodates 126 men would be available for occupancy at rents approximately the same as those prevailing before the army moved in leases may be obtained from bursar frederick ashbaugh and a ten dollar deposit must be paid on all rooms civilians vacated drinker house as well as richards and taylor at the end of the 1943 spring se mester after a hair-raising period of expecting a sudden unan nounced arrival of an army spe cialized training program unit coupled with a 24-hour eviction notice similar to the one received by dorm dwellers at m.i.t and other institutions price hall was the only dorm kept open while almost all campus fraternities were vacated in order to renovate for army use toward the end of the last summer
