the lehigh community participated in a voluntary fast to benefit the lehigh valley food bank sponsored by leh igh's catholic organization the newm an council according to organizer alane pas tore 90 newman council president approximately 20 students were invol ved in the fast the participating students abstain ed from eating for a 24-hour time period begining at noon on friday although the final figures are not in yet pastore said she estimates the community event netted at least 700 for the lehigh valley food bank pastore said she got the idea from a similar community service event she participated in while in high school pastore said she thought a fast there's hunger right i outside our door not just in africa it's close | to home right here in | the lehigh valley alane pastore 90 newman council president would work well at lehigh i thought it would be a good way to get a lot of people involved but it could work just as well with 10 or 50 people pastore explained the group assembled at 5 p.m in upper grace hall where they were occupied by a series of activities a movie about hunger in the lehigh valley was shown and an optional mass was held in the newman center the activities continued on through the night until the fast ended the next day at noon all participants lined up sponsors to fund them in the event the students are now in the final process of collecting money this.week there's hunger right outside our door not just in africa it's close to home right here in the lehigh val ley said pastore she added no one at lehigh knows what it's like to really be hung ry although pastore said that overall the fast was successful she said she wishes more students could have par ticipated if i had to do it again i would have publicized it more .. put it in the entire rush period accord ing to ifc president matt deutscher 90 the ifc objected to the proposed policy for two reasons it would be impossible to enforce and it would make the hill look elitist deutscher explained in an effort to reform the old policy the ifc issued a proposal to the dean of students office to show that rush could be improved by other means for example increasing minimum sanctions for violation of rush rules ifc patrol of rush events and holding a dry weekend during the 1989 rush period were included in their propos weekend begins the transition to dry hill by joshua ifc proposal to change the current rush system last year the dean of students office had a ridiculous law which prohibit ed freshman from going on the hill al the goal of the ifc and the dean of students office is to have a completely dry rush period by the fall of 1991 this means that no alcohol will be served by the fraternities at any social events during the entire rush period not just at rush functions according to deutscher deutscher pointed out that lehigh has a rush period that lasts a semester as opposed to other colleges two or three week rush periods having rush a semester and keep ing it dry is almost impossible he said yet the length of our rush puts us above and beyond other greek sys tems deutscher said by the 1991 rush reform the length will be shortened slightly to 7-8 weeks long the purpose of dry weekend is to pull the emphasises away from drink ing especially abusive drinking explained robert robeson greek affairs coordinator deutscher said he wanted houses to take advantage of the weekend to show the greek system could have ftin without alcohol we can't be like traditional frats where all we do is drink drink drink see weekend page 4 fast raises 700 for
