the brown and white vol 97 no 11 friday october 20 1989 lehigh university political newspaper needs student help by joshua feldman brown and white news writer at the start of next week the progres sive student alliance psa will set up a table in the university center to distribute literature about panama and to raise money to allow dr miguel bernal a visiting professor to con tinue publishing his anti-noriega newspaper called alternativa bernal currently pays for the alter ternativawith his own money the vast majority of the cost of the alternativa is spent on faxing copies to his friends in panama because all mail from the united states to panama is currently being censored bernal mails copies to his friends in puerto rico and mexico who then mail them to panama usual ly within several hours of receiving alternativa tens of thousands of cop ies hit the streets jeff park 90 who serves as a teach ing apprentice for bernal is organiz ing the effort which has been appropriately named dollars for freedom due to the recent events in pan ama this is a good time to create awareness on campus and to raise money to allow dr bernal to continue publishing his newspaper alternat nativa park said park said he also hopes that the dollars for freedom campaign will spark enough interest in latin amer ica so that a committee on latin america can be created within the psa the psa held a similar campaign last year which raised 200 but park is optimistic that the response this year will be even better bernal began his opposition to a military-dominated government on oct 12 1968 one day after a military coup seized power from the then democratic government that had been in power bernal started a radio show in 1975 which he used to publicly criticize the narco-militaristic regime his show was abruptly cancelled by the govern ment in 1976 and he was exiled from panama bernal spent the next two years in mexico and was allowed to return to panama in 1978 after the signing from gryphons and peer counselors there were mixed reac tions among students about alcohol awareness week mark mckinney 91 explain ed i agree with the univers ity's goals de-emphasizing alcohol on campus however the universtiy must leave the final decision up to the stu dents people have already decid ed what they are going to do they don't need the university to keep trying to change their minds said phillip smith 92 rick cartledge 93 said alcohol awareness week is worth it even if it only helps one person we are not advocating abstinence to anyone over 21 madonna said we are just trying to provide informa tion so students can make the decisions they need to make madonna said she hopes to have future programs on alcohol awareness during periods where alcohol con sumption has traditionally increased this would include chris tmas break and lehigh-laf ayette weekend by erica crespi brown and white asst news editor act 31 lecture gets poor attendance see shuman page 7 as part of alcohol awareness week art shuman author of pennsylvania act 31 spoke to lehigh students tuesday about his reasons for writing the strictest drunk driving laws in the country only 10 students and two faculty members attended the event which was sponsored by the interfraternity and panhellenic councils shuman who has spoken to over a million people including 10 appearances at lehigh said he was bothered by the low turn-out considering the severity of alcohol problems in today's society shuman a lawyer was formerly a prosecuter in philadelphia for 15 years prior to his present position as a professor of law at la salle university in philadelphia shuman is also an advisor for phi kappa alpha fraternity by morcine scott brown and white news writer to educate students about alcohol to increase their awareness of the consequ ences that can result from alcohol abuse and to provide helpful alternatives to using alcohol were the main objec tives of alcohol awareness week said drug and alcohol counselor kevin siddons this week was national alcohol awareness week through the combined efforts of the dean of students office area coordinator tina mad onna siddons and a group of student volunteers a variety of programs were sponsored to increase students alcohol awareness on campus alcohol awareness week at lehigh began on monday with an informational meet ing in grace lounge tables were set up with displays and posters students walking through the lounge could pick up many items including a sample national alcohol test madonna said it appeared that many students would have stopped by the tables and displays if they had not been hurried through the lounge by their friends in addition to the displays in grace lounge siddons pre sented a program entitled friends don't let friends the program focused on how students could help friends who may be experiencing an alcohol-related problem on tuesday there was another seminar which focus ed on alcohol and the law it was presented by art shum an attorney professor and faculty advisor to phi kappa theta fraternity at lasalle university in philidelphia alcohol awareness week ended with mocktail con test finals last night in club 31 the purpose of this pro gram was to show students that they could drink and have fun without using alcohol siddons commented that activities such as alcohol awareness week are import ant because students need to know their options he estim ates that about 25 percent of lehigh students graduate
