tent depicting the housing conditions for many unfortunate black south africans as part of divestment week activities two weeks ago the progressive student alliance psa constructed the shanty in front of maginnes hall and fairchild martindale library and continually kept it occupied by students to make others aware of the situation in south africa psa co-chairman mike gildenberg 91 said we had the shanty to show see divestment page 2 b&w photo by whitney rearick members of the progressive student alliance set up the shanty tent to protest apartheid vol 97 no 10 tuesday october 17 1989 lehigh university the brown and white williams is from chadsworth calif and attended university of california los angeles earning her bachelor and master of arts in classics she earned a doctorate in classics from cambridge university england wil liams took a temporary position teach ing at university of california santa barbara then came to lehigh in 1985 she said she is hoping to teach again next year and is currently working on a translation of the luiad williams said she is interested in homer's use of the greek language and is also working on computer applications she sits on the standing of students committee and works on interpreting the rules to the students benefit classics professor named dean bybetheasley brown and white news writer julie williams former assistant pro fessor in the classics department has been appointed associate dean of the college of arts and science williams said she finds the job demanding and exhausting but still enjoys it i've been able to meet more people than by teaching and i can appreciate more what it's like to be a student williams said she is involved in all undergraduate academic affairss including student record keeping and evaluating courses and academic experiences she said she is in the process of redefining her job in a changing office b&w photo by judy mcgrath julie williams s african students get scholarships one question williams is trying to answer is whether major programs are integrated williams said she wants to be sure students are getting a broad education with appropriate training for their careers she said she wants to make sure students are taking classes that explore a field in-depth and are not just taking a bunch of classes that have nothing to do with each other another goal williams set is to send more students to graduate school and to make the atmosphere at lehigh more stimulating and exciting she said she hopes students have an integrated life with things to think about and time to reflect but not a bunch of monks in the library all day by kristen kuck brown and white news writer lehigh is sponsoring two south afri can students through a special scholar ship which was initiated by the lehigh forum south african education com mittee the scholarship gives the two stu dents russell nel and aubrey moea the opportunity to an education which would otherwise be unattainable in south africa forum initiated the scholarship pro gram two years ago in response to growing concern about the apartheid government in south africa lehigh chaplain reverend hubert flesher said the south african educa tion committee was formed five years ago to research the political and social problems in south africa and to teach the lehigh community through media of speakers fliers and films flesher said the forum found most people dismally ignorant of south africa nobel peace prize winner arch bishop desmond tutu a well known political activist and freedom fighter in south africa stimulated a lot of interest when he came to speak at lehigh flesher said at this time forum decided to develop a program by which lehigh could directly help fight apartheid and to bring the issue of divestment to forum decided to j develop a program by ill which lehigh could if directly help fight hi apartheid reverend hugh flesher africa is going to need trained black leaders the scholarships are giving south africans this education flesher said several american uni versities offer scholarships and pro grams but lehigh is one of the first to offer a full tuitional ride the goal of the program said flesh er is to expand the scholarship from two students to eight this will create a community within lehigh where a medium of cultural exchange is viable between the south african and ameri can students according to both flesher and moea black students in south africa are often denied a quality education see scholarship page 8 a head flesher said the divestment issue was popular among many other universities at the time yet it met with strong resistance from the lehigh board of trustees the board of trustees chose to do the thing lehigh does best that is educate flesher said in order for development to occur and for apar theid to be abolished he added south
