7 therapy center offers free fitness screening byjohnmasonis brown and wwte news writer next week marks national physical therapy week which is an attempt to focus attention on the improvement of health and physical per formance of people of all ages national physical therapy week was initiat ed in 1981 by the american physical therapy association apta beginning monday and continuing through friday physical therapy services at lehigh will be offering basic fitness screening which will include evaluation of an individu al's flexibility lower extremity strength and aerobic fitness the fitness screening will be offered free to the campus community adrienne hughes director of the physical therapy department is a physical therapist and member of the american physical ther apy association and national athletic trainer association hughes has been at lehigh for the past 12 years after graduating from columbia with a post-baccalaureate degree in physical ther apy since beginning her career at lehigh hughes has seen the number of visits jump from 4,600 to 8,200 visits in 1988 hughes said the dramatic increase in pati ent numbers can be attributed to higher participation in athletics and a continually growing concern for personal fitness physical therapy is growing at a rapid pace in recent years due to the athletic emphasis in our society resulting in more surgeries and to the more frequent patient turnover from physicians to therapists she said according to hughes lehigh has an espe cially high level of athletic participation for example the area in dravo dormatory has been converted into the dravo lounge which opened last year although the levels are now below dangerous levels the risk of overex posure to radon in dravo is reduced even further by the short lengths of time that students spend in a lounge as opposed to a room they sleep and do homework in everyday said richard freeman director of environmental health and safety risk management testing continued in the dravo and trembley areas after the 1987 inci dent according to freeman the last test was done june 16-19 and radon air concentration did not exceed guidel ines set by the der we checked the levels and found the two locations dravo and trembley and so we fixed it kreppel said the areas were ventilated over semester break to lower the radon levels lehigh worked closely with the stu dents and parents involved and gave the students the option to relocate into new dormatories upon their return in february levels dropped below the hazard ous range and since then no other radon problems have been discover by erica crespi brown and white asst news editor radon has not been found above safety levels set by the pennsylvania department of environmental resour ces der since 1987 according to the department of auxiliary services barbara kreppel auxiliary ser vices director said the information printed in the sept 26 issue of the brown and white inaccurately present ed radon as posing a health risk in recent months she said the facts about radon were correct but stressed that the problems lehigh had with high radon levels occurred several years ago concern about radon started in 1985 when information about the dangers of radon gas and the effects the read ing prong has on the lehigh valley began to appear on the news kreppel said when calls where received from admissions counselors in response to these reports lehigh brought in a health physicist and began checking its buildings for radon levels in 1986 newman said the police officer craig stefko yelled from other side of the street get the camera out of here of i'll break it newman said chini responded " we're from the brown and white we're allowed to take pictures " according to newman when chini mentioned being a reporter that's when it all started officer stefko shoved chini to the ground where his head struck and dragged him on the pavement 10 feet away to the median witness peter harter 90 said another witness carolyn harris 92 said after nick chini went down the next thing i saw because my view was blocked by a couple of cars was three police officers bringing him up in a head lock harris and newman agreed they saw no reason for the police aggres sion the officer seemed upset that nick wanted to report this i think he see arrest page 7 b&w editor arrested while on the job by caroune west brown and white editor in chief abroum and white editor was arrest ed and charged last night with disor derly conduct by a bethlehem police officer the editor was trying to assist a brown and white photographer who was taking pictures at the scene of an automobile accident in which the officer's police car was involved nick chini 90 a brown and white copy desk editor was arrested in the aftermath of a 9:30 p.m automobile accident at the corner of morton and vine streets in which a station wagon broadsided a bethlehem police car forcing the police car into a saab parked nearby witnesses said the photographer with chini was brodhead house resident scan mcgowan 92 according to witness barry newm an 92 a resident of brodhead one went down to the street and one started to take pictures of the car accident
