vol li — no 39 bethlehem pa wednesday may 3 1944 price 5 cents a new flag a new lehigh evidently no one on the administration at lehigh is a boy scout for it seems that their knowledge about the care and display of the american flag is to say the most scanty just take a look at the torn banner that was once a flag the next time you pass the flagpole and you'll see what we mean the american flag represents a set of ideals that thousands of le high men revered enough to risk their lives for and it is nothing less than a betrayal of them to neglect and degrade the symbol of their courage and sacrifice in the way university authorities have done by allowing the banner on the flagpole to be torn apart by wind rain snow and every other type of weather bethlehem has to offer any good boy scout could inform the proper authorities that the flag is to be displayed in such a manner that it is not at the perpetual mercy of the elements and that in case it does become torn or frayed it is to be replaced immediately soon lehigh will celebrate its traditional flagpole day a time for the passing out of awards and the celebration of achievements is a flagpole topped by a battered hardly recognizable piece of cloth a fit site for such an event student government does not think so as it is sending a representative to president williams to inquire about a new flag surely the financial position of the university will not be undermined by dipping into the reserve fund for the price of a new flag and what will be the fate of this new flag if present policy is any indication it will suffer the same neglect that the rest of lehigh has suffered in this era of contraction which is seemingly concerned with nothing but retrenchment let us hope that a new flag will soon wave over a new
