see mayor page 6 lehigh alumni mayor ken smith and former mayor paul marcincin will return to cam pus on monday for the city of bethlehem's mayoral debate to be held in neville hall at 7:30 p.m the debate co-sponsored by the bethlehem jaycees and the lehigh university visit ing lectures committee is open for the public to hear both candidate's views on issues facing the bethlehem community by erica crespi brown and white asst news editor mayoral debate comes to lu on monday smith marcincin expected to tackle south side issues affected by the local issues as well said laurie gostley assistant to president peter likins for public relations and member of the beth lehem jaycees prior to the debate index cards will be passed out to the audience so they can write down questions they have for the candidates according to gostley these questions will the development of the south side balancing the budget parking problems increasing police patrol of south side liquor establish ments and future disposal of solid waste in the area will be issues addressed at the debate often times we forget that the university is part of the bethlehem community and is the brown and white vol 97 no 3 friday september 15 1989 lehigh university kane worked on the presidential search committee that located likins he was the first lehigh person i met in 1980 he was special to me he said he always had a good word for everyone he was part of the culture at lehigh it's hard to replace a person like that likins said alan pense dean of the college of engineer ing said he did all the things a professor should do and did them well he'll be very difficult to replace he was really a university professor pense said his interest didn't stop at the borders of the college of engineering pense said kane genuinely enjoyed his work at lehigh he enjoyed every day and often told me how much he enjoyed his job and coming to work according to pense plans are being made for a memorial service in honor of kane a native of york pa kane received a see kane page 7 death of george kane shocks saddens university community by dianne carun brown and white associate editor george kane associate dean of the college of engineering and applied science and professor of industrial engineering died wed nesday while attending a conference at the university of cincinnati in ohio kane who celebrated his 64th birthday last week was scheduled to conduct a workshop at the conference of the american society for metals according to university chaplain hugh flesher the coroner in cincinnati said kane died in his hotel room of natural causes a member of the lehigh faculty since 1950 kane is survived by his wife regina and four sons george kane was everyone's friend—stu dents alumni his faculty colleagues and the administration he was universally loved as a professor university president peter likins said the loss is a devastating blow to the university associate dean of engineering george kane lehigh rallies behind bernal's visa request scholars said the united states embassy in panama is reluctant to award dr bernal another grant when he has had one so recently and when there may be other candidates in central america who could teach the courses you request as you know one of the purposes of the scholar-in residence program is to bring scho lars to the u.s who have not been in the country recently bernal said their response is a pretext because of my public position against noriega and my public speeches against drug trafficking according to bernal most of panama's drug business is run by the command er of the panamanian military forces manuel antonio noriega bernal said i believe that noriega still has friends high up in the united states because he worked for the united states central intelligence agency cia for 30 years bernal said he believes noriega called some of his former cia contacts and coaxed them to use their influ ence in denying his visa in addition bernal said he believes washington is unhappy with him due to his belief byamysavitsky brown and white news writer dr miguel bernal a visiting interna tional relations professor at lehigh continues to teach as a visa extension was finally granted after receiving a denial last semester last spring lehigh requested the extension for bernal who is in exile from panama so he could continue teaching here the first request was denied bringing some members of the lehigh community to bernal's aid in their first reply to lehigh the council for international exchange of thatthe united states is allowing itself to be used by noriega for his own purposes bernal is back at lehigh this year through the efforts of some members of the student body and faculty a petition was circulated by the progres sive student alliance and signed by 942 people the petition stated that bernal's visa should be renewed bernal still keeps the petition in the top drawer of his desk the faculty assistance brought the see bernal page 7 be screened and addressed toward the end of the program the debate will open with an introduction of the candid ates and the rules that will be observed each candidate will make a brief opening statement followed by 10 min utes of moderated questions and answers the press will have 20 min utes of questions and then the candidates will have 15 min utes to answer some
