the visitor's center a one-year pilot pro gram created to provide housing for guests of lehigh university has been extended another year due to its success the visitor's center is a modest completely furnished four bedroom house located at 314 e fifth street in addition to the bedrooms there is one common bathroom a kitchen and a living room since its opening last fall approximately 20 of the university's departments centers and institutes have utilized the center to house more than 100 visting scholars scientists and professors the majority of guests stay less than a week while a few visitors have lived at the center for several months while doing research or participating in various projects at lehigh rooms are rented to guests on a break-even basis the rooms are 25 per night when rented weekly and the daily rate drops to under 17 when rented on a monthly basis the center does not take any one-night reservations to see visitors page 7 b&w photo by sean mcgowan defensive changes in social policy result in new party rules vol 97 no 2 be a reasonable size erickson said it has been difficult to define what reasonable size means he said one of the things that we what we are trying to do is help students learn how to be responsible social hosts 111 and if they use alcohol to use it in a responsible 1111 way j mark erickson assl dean of students have done this year is develop capac ity numbers really as a guideline for houses so we don't have these situa tions where you are shoulder to shoulder elbow to elbow and the party is basically unmanageable security guards fraternity presi dents and social chairs will now be asked to monitor overcrowding and control the influx of people to the party area forum also passed two resolutions to aid in party control first erickson explained students will no longer obtain a hand stamp at the entrance to the bar area they must be stamped elsewhere to prevent crowding in the area secondly the resolution permits appropriately trained fraternity mem bers eighteen years or older to serve alcohol erickson said fraternity mem bers who were at least 21 years old could act as bartenders but fraternit ies had trouble finding enough people to monitor the bar erickson said rules concerning par ty registration have been changed to give campus officials a better idea of events on campus preplanned non alcoholic events must now be register ed in addition to alcoholic events the definition of a social event has also been modified erickson said the social policy had defined a social event as a gathering of more than 10 people where alcohol is present that occurs in a student room or apart ment in the original definition a party was also occurring where there was a gathering of more than 20 persons see social poucy page 5 only acceptable form of identification only preregistered guests with a lehigh guest card may use some other form of identification students can recieve guest cards in the dean of students office before 4 p.m friday erickson said the resolution is an attempt to ensure that only students of legal age are drinking at parties another concern that was address ed in the social policy changes was the passing of beer over partitions in the past the social policy rule stated since the majority of those in attend ance at regular social functions will be under the age of 21 hosts must identify a second location separate from the main party room which is the only place where alcoholic beverages may be served the new rule adds this separate location must be an area blocked off by real walls or partitions benches tables etc are not sufficient although party manageability has been a factor in the past erickson said an increased amount of emphasis is being put on party capacity this year the rule had stated that parties must by alicia brown brown and white news writer the campus life committee a group of lehigh students and faculty members reviewed the social policy and recommended that changes be made in party procedures and regula tions concerning identification checks party rooms and size bartend ers registration and hand stamps associate dean of students mark erickson helped implement the chan ges in the social policy he said what we are trying to do is help students learn how to be responsible social hosts and if they use alcohol to use it in a responsible way erickson added students need to obey the law by responsibly serving people that are of legal drinking age so they do not become intoxicated or create any problems erickson said a major concern of the students and faculty was the use of fake identification to obtain alcohol to eliminate this problem lehigh's student government forum passed a resolution april 27 stating a lehigh
