price 5 cents vol li — no 35 dormitories remain closed to civilians april 14 board meeting to decide on reopenings fraternities can reoccupy campus houses long awaited directory finally bows into light town council's student direc tory for the present semester has made its long heralded appearance on the campus the eleven page booklet contains the name class curriculum local address and phone number of every student registered for the present semes ter the directory which was pub lished by the town council with ralph evans e p as the guiding hand and with the cooperation of the registrar's office is mimeo graphed in two columns town men in good standing can procure their copies at the arca dia office free of charge upon pre sentation of their membership cards or from their section pres idents others who desire copies may obtain them from the arcadia office or from the supply bureau upon payment of a nominal fee of fifteen cents m.&c plans musical drama mustard and cheese may go night club this semester if plans temporarily adopted can be carried out at a meeting monday it was decided to attempt to produce a cabaret-type melodrama later the civic theater to be the scene of action will be turned into a sort of cabaret with food to be served at tables music will be provided by a rugged three-piece band which will add to the nine ties atmosphere during the course of the evening a condensed play will be enacted on the stage that will fit in with the general mood the show if it goes over would be repeated possibly on a monthly basis each show would last two or maybe three nights professor al rights adviser to the club is now investigating several plays and the one picked will be tele scoped into forty minutes worth of entertainment it was also announced at the meeting that arnold schwartz berg president of the club has been appointed representative to arcadia re-exams f or8l seem imminent the 81 students recommended for 2-a deferments under the war manpower quota allowance for lehigh may soon be ordered by their local draft boards to take physical examinations dean car others told faculty members mon day but such orders he explained will not necessarily mean that the men are to be drafted or that the quota system is to be discontinued recent selective service rulings have instructed local boards to have all men under 26 examined but those rulings have not re voked or suspended the deferment of men included in college quotas under the war manpower com mission ruling which went into effect on march 1 lehigh drew up a list of 81 students in good stand ing who met all requirements of activity and occupational bulletin no 33-6 such lists must be sent to the national roster of scien tific and specialized personnel in washington for approval before the students draft boards are di rected to place the selected men in class 2-a non-fraternity men now living in town fraternity houses and pri vate homes will have to continue to live there at least until july although the army has vacated the dormitories these buildings will remain idle for the remainder of the semester for according to e kenneth smiley director of ad missions who doubles as univer sity authority on housing prob lems the university feels that it should not siphon off non-frater nity boarders from the town houses in the middle of a semester since these houses provided vir tually the only housing facilities for non-fraternity men when the army took over the campus whether or not the dormitories will or will not re open even in july is not as yet decided these and other pertinent questions con cerning the coming era of con traction will remain unanswered until the results of the april 14 meeting of the university board of trustees are made available lamberton hall will not be able to cater to civilian students now that the army has left there seems to be a vague stipulation in army regulations that provides that army equipment such as has been installed in lamberton hall may not be used to prepare food destined for non-gi stomachs even if there are no army men in the vicinity drown hall once lehigh's stu dent center will not exchange its wartime dazzle of paint of steam bars and coffee urns for the fam iliar lounges and card rooms the first floor will be closed off and dr beardslee's office will still oc cupy the second floor tone of of ficial comment would seem to in dicate that this building may soon follow the fate of grace hall arcadia to elect committee arcadia voted last monday night to hold elections for an entirely new five man committee late this semester present members of the committee remaining in school will be elegible according to arcadia it was felt that the old list was not truly representative of those stu dents now on the campus an all-university banquet was tentatively scheduled for thurs day may 18 an effort will be made to get some entertainer in conjunction with the scl commit tee it was decided to offer represen tation on arcadia to the ast men remaining on the campus paul rieber met e junueu 44 was named chairman of the senior class gift committee treasurer fritz yon bergen re ported a balance of 225.12 up to date president robert moore reported that 405.69 was given from the student community chest fund to the red cross and that the fac ulty had contributed 1040.50 the fact that the scl commit tee was not in any way respon sible to any student group was brought out this situation was held under consideration sports events planned for prom weekend at grace hall finale smith's band to play dick smith and his orchestra from easton has been signed as the band for the junior prom to be held in grace hall on april 22 from nine to one the event will probably be the last of a social nature for the duration since the building is to be closed to further activities immediately after the dance permission has been obtained from dean congdon for fraternity houses to be opened to dates from saturday at 1 until 4 sunday af ternoon according to fritz yon bergen and dave kirk co-chair man of the dance committee houses are requested to submit petitions to dean congdon as soon as possible listing dates and their escorts and the faculty chaperone for the weekend smith with his 13 piece orches tra and two glamorous vocalists has won great acclaim throughout the valley with his new and most danceable version of swing the hot stuff is generously interspersed with the slow dreamy music and the great variety of music types he offers should make for an eve ning of the highest type of enter tainment smith played at lehigh for the first time at the ast farewell formal held the middle of last month and was quite well re ceived he has also played for dances at nearby moravian col lege for women an afternoon to suit any sports taste has been scheduled that should provide plenty of enter tainment for students and their dates a baseball game has been arranged with rutgers on nearby taylor field and if the great american sport isn't to your taste or hers there is a track meet with temple to be held on the upper field and if you should prove hard to please and still find neither of these interest you there is also a tennis match scheduled with muhlenberg college across town on steel field tickets for the affair have been distributed to living groups town men who have not made arrange ments and who wish to attend may acquire tickets at the arcadia office or the supply bureau any time up to april 15 for 2.30 after the 15th however the price of admission will rise to 3.00 so buy your tickets early pi tau sigma taps 6 at recent smoker at a smoker held last thursday by pi tau sigma honorary me chanical engineering society six new men were tapped as prospec tive members the new men pick ed were claude messinger al ely paul andrews frank marsh jim wilson and martin brossman the initiation has not been definitely scheduled but will be held prob ably around the end of the month as soon as a speaker has been found the meeting was run by robert cawley and al perly the only undergraduate members left in the society the former president william st clair is now an in structor prof t e jackson spoke at the meeting about the responsibilities of keeping the society alive dur ing these war times and what it meant to some of the older mem bers prof cheney leaves lehigh for duration dr elliot ward cheney asso ciate professor of physics has be come another member of the tran sient lehigh faculty dr cheney's leave of absence for the duration will leave very few men in that department pro fessors bergman bailey and bu erschaper have already left grace hall to close in three weeks according to word received from the office of superintendent of buildings grace head of the english dept the williams senior prizes for excel lence in english composition and public speaking were established by the late prof edward h wil liams jr an alumnus of lehigh university of the class of 1875 the prizes are awarded by the faculty on the recommendation of the committee on williams senior prizes all seniors interested should observe the following rules first prize of 75 and second prize of 25 awarded annually in english for dissertations submit ted by regular members of the senior class on or before may 1 the committee on williams senior prizes published before the close of the university year a list of recommended subjects for diser tations but a senior may have his own subject choice approved by the committee awards are made by the faculty upon recommendation of 4he com mittee but no award is made if in any case a disertation does not meet the standard of merit estab lished by the committee this standard includes such points as excellence in thought plan de velopment argument and compo sition graduation date sunday june 18 a senior petition asking that all graduation exercises be held sun day june 18 was unanimously approved by the faculty in a vote taken monday the exercises were originally scheduled in the university cal endar for june 18 and 19 such a program with baccalaureate ser vices held sunday and diplomas awarded monday has been a le high tradition in their petition however the seniors pointed out that such a long weekend is im possible for many parents in war time and that it imposes an unne cessary burden upon local housing facilities collins-kurtz wedded in packer chapel miss betty jane collins became the bride of claude j kurtz chem e 043 in packer chapel on friday evening march 31 miss collins is the daughter of mrs guy collins 517 ninth avenue dr claude g beardslee university chaplain performed the ceremony which was informal brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa wednesday april 5 1944 the b&w needs you no kidding fellows this manpower shortage is really making the publication of the brown and white an almost impossible task the editorial staff has been shaved down to a mere half-dozen men and putting out a paper each week in addition to coping with a full load of studies is too much for such a small group the brown and white has always maintained that as many student activities as possible should continue in order to keep up lehigh morale in times like these when morale is so in danger of dissolving the brown and white doesn't want to fold up buit it will unless the ranks of the
