interviews with five special interest groups seeking housing in warren square facilities for 1989-90 the committee's responsibilities were twof old according to erickson who said first it had to decide which group would be denied accomodations the basis for the decision included the group's goals and objectives the history and success of its past efforts and programming selection processes used by the group for new members and contributions to the lehigh community he said in the second phase of the procedure the committee matched the remaining groups to the four houses based on programming needs number of members and planned use of space the committee placed each group in a house it was this second and non-negotiable decision that prompted the protest from international house residents erickson explained that this is the first year the selection process for special interest living groups has been used to divide the warren square residences among interested applic ants he said that although the process was formulated two years ago this year marks the housing decision protested i-house residents hold sit-in by erickson's office international house residents protested tuesday in front of the office of associate dean of students mark erickson against a decision to move them from their current house next year we have years of history and programming behind us why do they have to uproot an existing group asked international house president annie lim 90 occupied for the past 10 years by the international house warren square a will be the home of the new african amer ican-hispanic culture house for the next academic year current international house residents were granted space in warren square d the decision to relocate the international house was made by a special committee including residence hall council president julie shumofsky 89 west campus area coor dinator tina madonna warren square hall director and graduate student meg finley taylor college assistant hall director laura kupfrian 89 and associate director of residential services henry odi the commit tee received applications from and conducted by amy silver brown and white news writer earlier this week it was discovered that ex-bucknell football head coach george landis resigned partly because he thought other schools in the colonial league primarily lehigh and lafayette college were cheating by lowering minimum admissions standards as established by the league an article in the suribury daily item reported that four colonial league teams admitted at least 10 student-athletes below colonial league minimum standards lehigh-14 lafayette 14 holy cross-12 and colgate-11 according to colonial league executive director alan childs an index is used to measure incoming student athletes however there is no rule that sets a minimum requirement this index is a combined computation of the scholastic aptitude test sat scholastic gpa and class rank assistant vice president of student affairs joe sterrett responded to the allegations saying they were erroneous statements that were both unfair and innaccurate the communication wasn't well-handled by bucknell there are no minimums or maximums the colonial league stands on the principle that athletes should be representative of the overall undergraduate population of the school sterrett added lehigh's student-athlete population is indeed representative of our undprgr^^^^t y^rion fc^y " in an article in the morning coil lafayette football head coach bill russo was quoted as saying that a possible reason why landis was frustrated was because of a possible poor rapport with his admissions personnel when asked what the correlation was between a coach having good rapport with the admissions office sterrett stressed the critical importance of all of the coaches having twe erroneous statements that were both unfair and inaccurate " jo sterrett assistant vice president of student affairs a good understanding of the goals of the admissions office he said coaches are ambassadors of the university often they're interacting with prospective students and their parents in the same way that our admissions staff does every recruit's scholastic records are perused by colleg iate officials and if a player is at the low end of the index his admission must be justified to the committees apparently landis thought there was an average index score that could not be violated in the daily item article bucknell was reported to have admitted three players below the index minimum standard landis 10-19-1 at bucknell said he feared continued seasons of poor records hurting his career in the long run and did not see a realistic chance of bucknell winning the colonial crown by steven
