tonight a noted expert on african american psychology na'im akbar will continue the events of lehigh's black history month through his lec ture contributions of african ameri cans how racial images cloud black achievement the lecture one part in a series of events celebrating the culture of afri can americans will take place at 7 p.m in university center room 303 akbar will focus on how the talents of blacks have been exploited or ignored in the past and bring about awareness of the important achievements of afri can americans approaching the 21st century the challenges for young gifted african americans a revisitation of the past an assessment of the present where do we go from here is the theme which this month's events will explore the programs have been put togeth er by assistant dean of students sharon brown and are sponsored by the black students union bsu the by erica crespi brown and wnte news writer see history page 2 lecture continues month's cultural events black history celebrated minority programming committee office of cultural affairs women's alliance student activities council and obsidian inc allen green opened the celebration last wednesday and spoke about the significance of black history month a flag was also dedicated to the bsu at the service the function was well attended by minority students but only a few white students and faculty members attended jody rose 90 minority programming co-chair person and black history month organizer blamed lack of publicity as one of the reasons for the poor attend ence during black history month the spotlight is on the different aspects of african american culture which not many people on campus know much about according to rose we are disappointed because a lot of people don't turn out at the baw photo by jim kolfierg a data-destroying vims was discovered last week on computer disks from the media center now under control students who suspect they may have infected disks can take them to the computing center to be checked a virus affecting ms-dos computer disks which was discovered wednesday night on disks used in the media center of the e.w fairchild-martindale libr ary is now believed to be under control according to ken van wyk user consultant at the computi ng center van wyk said the virus was found when disks from the media center were returned to the computing center with complaints of data being wiped out the virus which is almost identical to one found at lehigh in november 1987 copies itself from infected disks onto the user's uninfected disk when data the user has been working on is saved the first nine times the virus is copied nothing happens the 10th time the virus is copied however it attempts to destroy the data on the user's disk unfortunately once the data is erased it cannot be recovered van wyk said when the infected disks were discover ed he and several student consultants worked to pick apart the program containing the virus he said the students started to write a program to eradicate the virus on thursday and had completed it by friday if students are concerned they may be using infected by di anne carljn brown and wnte news editor bug isolated in computing media centers computer virus under control disks van wyk said they should take their disks to the computing center where they can be checked for the virus he said if the virus is caught before it copies for the 10th time the disk can be saved without data loss van wyk suggests students who have used the computers in the media or computing centers in the past few days get their disks checked as a precaution ary measure he said the virus does not seem to be as widespread as the 1987 version and it seems to have been isolated in the the media and computer centers to protect uninfected disks van wyk said the user should keep write-protection tabs on their disks he also said students should not use a running system but should re-boot the system before they start work this way the student has effectively isolated himself from any virus which may exist in a running system besides infecting floppy disks van wyk said it is also possible for the virus to erase data from the computer's hard drive he said there have been no reports of data loss in hard drives van wyk said this is a deliberately placed virus and is not simply a recurrance of the old virus he
