representatives from the dean of stu dents office graduate students and members of several campus organiza tions students were urged to become involved and help make lehigh a better place for both men and women speakers said the campus as a whole must realize that relations between men and women on campus must be improved in order to improve the overall environment of campus life a petition was circulated to students and faculty calling for university pre sidentpeter likins to make an institu tional commitment to improving the environment for all women on the lehigh campus and for the establishment of a presidential com mission to irake recommendation for action and a clear policy to warn future aggressors this petition was accepted by provost david sanchez at the conclu sion of the ral ly assistant dean of stu dents jan wal bert urged stu dents to help improve the ftiture at lehigh by becoming involved and pulling together as a community of men and women respecting each other as equals walbert said all individuals men and women are victimized when any individual is degraded in any man ner...the petition suggests that we take a positive approach to improve the environment for women at leh igh " walbert stressed the fact that lehigh needs the time energy effort and commitment of those in the leh igh community to take action and support the fundamental rights of others tracy milin a graduate student called for improving social progress at lehigh by forming a women's commit tee and other committees to study the concerns of the students on campus we here at lehigh cannot be the leaders of tomorrow when women feel intimidated instead of self-confident in the classroom and on campus until we do make social progress in this area lehigh will not be known as a national leader but as a national disgrace for its social atmosphere milin said carol vandarkarr 89 a member of the progressive student alliance said ignorance and insensitivity could easily destroy the potential of lehigh and nullify the intellect that we do possess if we allow any member of b&w photos by wes schwandt senior violetta talandis above the student organizer of tuesday's rally spoke to more than 300 students ad ministrators faculty and staff in the lobby of maginnes hall at right vice president for student affairs marsha duncan center social relations department chairman james mclntosh left and dean of the college of arts and science james gunton look on the brown and white bethlehem pennsylvania 215 758-4181 friday november 11 1988 vol.loo n0.17 lehigh university more than 300 attend rally for awareness see rally page 7 our community to harass abuse or assault another member or allow these acts to go unpunished if we do not acknowledge personal rights and we are not willing to protect these rights then we shall lose them vandarkarr said by being here today we are taking a giant step towards the creation of a more united and safer campus we are showing that we care and are willing to make a commitment to lehigh's future graduate student mike engling drew applause and screams from the spectators when he asked them if they were present because they were appalled and outraged not only at what took place but also at the univers ity adminstration's response to the incident engling said this is not only an issue of gender but also a human issue it is important that we recognize that this is not a male-female issue it is an issue that involves human beings engling said he was assaulted three years ago by a dozen men at the university of tampa in florida and all they got was a slap on the wrist he said the standards that are set and accepted at other places are not the ones that we will accept at leh igh...things like this don't have to happen and we don't have to put up with it you are here because a recently published event has made you angry you are here because you know that violence against another human being is wrong and you are here because you want to do something about it said violetta talandis 89 one of the organ izers of a rally held in maginnes hall on tuesday more than 300 students and faculty members attended the rally filling the lobby and balconies of maginnes the rally was held in response to the suspension of four male freshmen who were found guilty by the university committee on discipline of an offense against a person for shaving the pubic hair of a female student with an electric razor speakers at the rally included by adrienne tsang brown and whke news writer speakers urge campus to fight back for rights of individuals sports duke hopes to rebuild lehigh basketball page 19 men's soccer shoots for ecc title tomorrow page 20 what's inside news siddons reports increase in students seeking help page 3 ifc discusses ongoing secur ity saga page 4 â– gatuigs students sound off about nat ional election page 13 holocaust remembered with vigil page 15
