dukakis of daily whining about a negative campaign while the mas sachusetts governor has scorned bush for following me around on the issues bush has stormed the nation for the past several days in an effort to mainta in a lead that a gallup poll depicted at awareness rally today where to vote the polls will be open today from 7 a.m to 8 p.m a shuttle will be available to transport lehigh stu dents to both locations from 9 a.m to 7 p.m the shuttle will make continu al rounds about every 10 minutes with planned stops at the top of the u.c and the flagpole in front of the u.c it will also make rounds up to the hill and the area near the sororit ies lehigh students residing off-cam pus in the area west of the alumni memorial building i.e birkel and montclair avenues may vote at broughal middle school at the corn er of packer and brodhead avenues on-campus students and those residing elsewhere off-campus may vote at the litzenberger high rise retirement home next to bridge works restaurant on fourth street of this campaign the new york times reported yesterday dukakis on the other hand brought the vice president to task once again for selecting dan quayle as his run ning mate dubbing the indiana sena tor a crisis who has to be managed a philadelphia television station reported over the weekend that the results of a recent pennsylvania poll put the vice president just 3 percen tage points ahead of dukakis with only a 5 point margin of error as close as the rivals have been pitted in the polls however they remain vastly separated on several major issues although it is difficult to synthesize the issues of such a wide ranging campaign the following is a briefsynopsis of where the candidates stand on several major issues environment dukakis wants to stop off-shore drilling in sensitive areas strengthen the environmental protection agen cy and resist the construction of nuclear power plants until safer ways are found to dispose of the wastes from the plants the safety of reactor designs is upgraded bush backs nuclear power and new although undefined limits on emissions contributing to acid rain backs new legislation on ocean dump ing of wastes by the end of 1991 and the delay of offshore drilling in sensitive areas social security bush vows to not alter cost-of-living increases and social security benefits dukakis alleges bush would have to tap the social security trust fund to pay for weapons the capital gains tax cut and other campaign promises defense dukakis although he has dubbed strategic defense initiative a fanta see election page 4 campus organizations including the resid ence hall council student activities council forum student senate interfraternity coun cil and panhellenic council met to discuss what they will present at the rally in addition to the speakers a petition calling for university president peter li kins to make an institutional commitment to improving the environment for all women on the campus will also be presented according to talandis it's a university event the whole community should be involved " violetta talandis class of 1969 the petition also calls for a clear policy of punishment to warn future aggressors dean of students john smeaton said he and other members of the dean of students office will attend the rally we're fully supportive of the rally as it allows the issue of respect for women on campus to be raised and discussed he said smeaton also added his support to the petition in the event of rain talandis said the location for the rally will be the lobby of magi nnes hall by dianne carun brown and wnte asst news editor an open rally to protest the treatment of women on campus and address the issue of women's safety is to be held in front of the e.w fairchild-martindale library today at 4 p.m violetta talandis 89 one of the organizers of the rally stressed that the rally is open to everyone in the lehigh community it's a university event the whole community should be involved it's not just for women or femi nists she said the rally which is sponsored by the women's alliance is being organized by talan dis and amy richlin associate professor of classics it is a response to the suspension of four male freshmen who were found guilty by the university committee on discipline of offense against a person for shaving the pubic hair of a female student with an electric razor we want the issue of women's safety to be public we don't want it swept under the rug talandis said this issue happens this viol ence against women happens until the com munity gets together and says it won't happen talandis said the slate of speakers tomorrow will include both student and faculty represen tatives she said the presidents of various b&w photo by ken kunsman greg
