coming to lehigh in 1939 mr jones was active in journalism having worked for the cleveland plain dealer the steel magazine published in cleveland and for time incorporated mr jones was graduated from antioch college where he was editor of his college paper antiochian 2 bands to play at dance in a farewell to lehigh continued on page 4 the final social function of the army specialized training pro gram at lehigh university to be held in honor of the members of this regimental unit who will leave this month or early in april for new posts will be the friend ship ball to be held march 18 in grace hall it was announced by corp francis patrick carr of company c newly-elected chair man of the event the friendship ball which will exceed in size and entertainment even the regimental ball which drew more than a thousand couples will utilize two dance floors — the drill hall and the bas ketball court in grace hall with two excellent orchestras providing the music the names of the selected orchestras will be an nounced next week the dance to be a formal is expected to draw nearly every g i on the post and his date cyanide elects ressler president the returns on the brown and white poll on co-education sent to approximately 120 faculty members are still too incomplete for pub lication to be fair we must wait until at least one hundred replies come in the b&w expects to have most of the remaining returns by the time this paper is in your hands and a complete analyzed sum mary will appear next week on the whole the faculty has been most co-operative and has sent in some very interesting comment in approximately the correct present ratio of pro's and con's and doubts here are some of the quotes which expressed ideas all the way from no co-eds ever to we should have had them 20 years ago pro i favor no restriction upon the opportunity of women to obtain any kind of education they desire at lehigh or anywhere else r m smith * * * i feel that to maintain any re striction on the admittance of women to lehigh is unwarranted in the face of the growing im portance of women in all branches of professional activity lehigh's continued existence in the years to come may well depend on the speedy and ungrudging admission of women to all curricula offered uy the university p g bergemann * * • i do not wish to have women admitted to lehigh until and un less adequate provisions are made and full responsibilities funda mental to that choice are accepted norms established by the amer ican association of university women for accrediting graduates should be immediately and fully met if and when a choice is made to admit women this includes for example a dean of women and certain standards for living quarters if a merger similar to the fed eration or confederation of certain colleges such as the columbia university group or the canadian or british university pattern were promoted with our neighbor just across the bridge most if not all of these standards could be easily met with very little or no finan cial outlay it would seem to me to be of mutual advantage to both schools and the community to set any co-educational program here in cooperation rather than in competition with our very close neighbor j l graham * * * i went to a college where some classes were co-ed and some were not morale in the co-ed classes always seemed higher than in the others a little healthy competi tion between the sexes in the class continued on page 6 con the only reason this question wins attention at this time is that co-education offers a facile expe dient — and that's my best argu ment against it the price of sur vival is not co-education lehigh has more important problems to face — problems which co-educa tion would tend to complicate exponents of co-education have not considered the effects upon neighboring institutions yet alone the significant changes that would take place here at lehigh in my opinion lehigh simply is not ready for co-education and cannot be made ready for the ex periment over night a j barthold * * * i feel that women should not be admitted i would make an ex ception in case of a request from a government agency large com pany etc for special training of a group of women — allison butts * * * here's one comment that cannot be classified into either camp i could not reach a decision on the question until a study of the changes required in physical plant and the expenses entailed have been made i seriously doubt that enough women would be at tracted to lehigh to justify tha changes in the physical plant and added costs such as a dean of women's office etc i have no objections to having lehigh coed providing 1 enough women at tend so males would not be con cerned with the females during class and 2 the expense would be justified with enrollment limited to 1700 students the university can op erate better with all males than with 90 males and 10 females as an emergency measure the fe males might constitute a greater percentage but when pace comes the number of women registering would be small i do not think i am qualified to express an opinion about the arts and business colleges donald ressler e.p j'4s and norman sidebotham ch.e j'4s were elected to the positions o president and secretary-treasurer respectively at the first meeting for the new semester of the jun ior
