8 9 a m to 3 p m union bank thursday march 9 9 a m to 3 p m first national bank thursday march 9 4 p m to 9 p m hotel bethlehem red cross blood unit to be at masonic temple civilian students enrolled at lehigh for the spring semester are approximately 120 fewer than were in school for the winter term according to figures released from the office of the registrar although registration will re main open until march 4 very few are expected to enroll after this week and registration is not expected to exceed the 330 stu dents now attending classes last semester there were 457 civilians at lehigh the drop of 127 is not as severe as some had predicted only four had regis tered for graduate courses at the close of business on wednesday but enrollment in the graduate graduate school usually lags be hind that of the undergraduates and this figure is expected to rise before registration closes special courses in writing and speech are being offered by the department of english in late af ternoon and evening classes so far the interest in these courses has been encouraging the depart ment reports courses are available in visual aids school administration super vision vocational guidance and individual research for school teachers who are interested in continuing work for permanent certification and master's degree in education graduate courses are also avail able in biology english chemis try electrical engineering me chanical engineering metallurgic al engineering geology psycholo gy and mathematics 330 civilians register for spring term fritz lab pioneers process used on douglas contracts by robert mayer unknown to most lehigh men fritz engineering lab has just com pleted over a year's work as a factory for airplane parts which were used by the douglas aircraft company with acting director robert mains at the helm fritz lab became the first testing laboratory in the united states to turn its faciliies to actual manufacturing under a sub-contract from a regular industrial concern a practice which has since been adopted by many of the dean selects 81 students country's largest testing organiza tions in the spring of 1942 the sum merill tubing company of bridge port pa found itself snowed under by the huge demand of douglas aircraft for certain air plane parts notably landing gears that could be made from hollow tubes and turned to mains and fritz lab for help the idea was to utilize the huge 900,000 pound testing press to taper tubes by forcing them through a die previously the tubes had been tapered by the usual lathing methods which en tailed a rather large waste of ma terial main was very skeptical about the chances for success but on july 1 production was begun within a few weeks mains dis covered that the process not only worked but that it was far more efficient than the old method as it saved 22 of the vital steel used a saving that eventually amounted to 1,000,000 pounds besides leading gears for some of the larger douglas planes work on four other types of parts was done on the campus often the need for the parts was so urgent that they were rushed to the douglas plant by air express and were added just as the plane rolled off the assembly line the tubes which are rapidly replacing solid bars in many types of manufacturing are sent to fritz lab while still having a uni form diameter are tapered in three steps and then sent back to the summerill plant for heat treatment at first the method was applicable only to large tubes but later was refined so that thin ner tubes could also be tapered for over a year fritz lab ran full blast on three 8-hour shifts per day using both student and faculty help and raised summer ill's production level almost 600 at last the demand for parts out grew fritz lab facilities and after the summerill plant built a tap ering unit that worked on the same principle as the testing press and which mains helped to design production in the campus war plant was stopped on the first of february 90 men were eligible now there are 170 according to the quota story in the last issue of the brown and white there were about 90 stu dents eligible while the figure stated in the dean's recent com munication was 170 at the time not all students had returned questionaires sent out by the dean as to their intention to return this semester and it was assumed that these students did not expect to return in accordance with the recent ruling of the war manpower commission allowing a quota of 81 2 a deferments dean congdon recently notified all students con cerning their status after this new ruling goes into effect march 1 the 81 men who have been se lected for deferment were selected from a possible 170 eligibles ac cording to the following policy 1 no student was recommended who was on scholastic probation 2 no students could be recom mended who intended to with draw from the university before graduation 3 no student could be recommended who intended to volunteer for enlistment before his graduation or who was al ready enlisted as a reserve or otherwise in some branch of the armed forces 4 no student could be recommended who did not meet all requirements of ac tivity and occupational bulletin no 33-6 including such stipula tions as that he will graduate within 24 months of the date of certification that he is a full-time student and that he is in good scholastic standing each student was assigned an index number composed of his scholastic average plus the num continued on page 6 art gallery shows oils and gouaches the university art gallery has on their work providing they pass the course regular classes are held in the editorial news-writing and ihotographic sections a-12 v-12 tests given here lehigh university will partici pate in the third nationwide test for candidates for the army's ast and the navy's v-12 programs wednesday march 15 9 until 12 o'clock in room 466 packard lab according to dean wray h congdon the qualifying tests are for those lehigh students who want to qualify as army or navy re servists lehigh students taking the v-12 or army tests must be 17 years old and not 21 by july 1 1944 application forms for the test can be secured from dean cong don's office before march 8 the qualifying tests students accepted on the basis of the test will probably be called into reserve corps at the end of the semester in which they take students who took either the april 2 or nov 9 tests and failed to qualify are not barred from taking the march 15 tests stu dents are not obligated to enter either of the army or navy re servist groups just because they take the tests students whose grades are in the lower half of their classes are considered poor material for reservist-status brown and white lehigh university
