the firsi of a two-part series about physical expansion at lehigh lehigh university situated on what is now 1,600 continu ous acres of woodland acad emic buildings and sports fac ilities was founded in 1866 with little more than 85 acres asa packer's dream of creat ing an institution emphasiz ing training in technical branches came to life with the erection of christmas saucon hall in 1865 the arch itecturally impressive uni versity center was added in 1868 and lehigh has been growing ever since the first major land expan the situation had improved but it had not improved to our satisfaction shcetz said new rules and regulations which were called for in a resolution passed by the trustees at the meeting need to be identifi ed quickly we need to have before the present student leadership moves on a social policy which will be acceptable to the board as well as to the student body he said emphasizing the trus tees want student input regarding the modifica tions see trustees page 5 by brian cooke brown and white editorial page editor the board is looking for a condition at lehigh which would represent responsible drinking said ted shcetz 54 chairman of the student affairs subcommittee of lehigh's board of trustees when the social policy went into effect back in 1980 sheetz said the trustees pretty much gave the administration a free hand to improve what was then a deteriorating situation progress and improvements were reviewed at a trustee meeting oct 9 the trustees decided by catherine clinton brown and white news writer panhel gets go-ahead for new sororities search the dean of students office gave the panhellenic council approval last week to begin looking for new sororities to bring on campus if everything proceeds as planned there will be one or two new sororities colonizing chapters at lehigh next fall accord ing to associate dean of students mark erickson erickson headed the committee which has been investigat ing sorority expansion since last year a lot of questions had to be answered before we could give the go-ahead he said one of the most important issues concerning colonizing new sororities is the housing problem since the administration will not be able to give a new sorority a house to live in they are looking into other options including having a smaller chapter lodge where only some of the members would live early on we had to address some basic questions about see sororities page 7 s african program approved by rich rosier brown and white news writer scholarships will be given to qualified black colored or other underprivileged south afri cans according to a resolution passed tues day by forum xviii the resolution urges these scholarships be given to undergraduates since lehigh offers some scholarships for black south africans in graduate study the resolution calls for the scholarships to be in the form of full tuition travel living expenses etc for a minimum of two students per year once the program becomes fully operational the university would be home to eight south african students per year according to university chaplain hugh flesher co-chairman of the south african educational subcommittee which proposed the resolution the subcommittee has checked with various agencies and has found there are students who are qualified and meet lehigh's admission requirements flesher also noted the strength of the program is not merely our gift to them in terms of education but their presence here at the university graduate student david leight also a co chairman of the subcommittee said the sub committee divided the issue of south africa and apartheid in two the first division scholarships led to the passing of this resolu tion he said the subcommittee will now deal with the divestment issue by meeting nov 5 with board of trustees member kirk pendleton at which time the subcommittee will learn how lehigh's money is invested in south africa leight said the meeting will also provide insight auditorium wednesday night for his defection to the united states levchenko the highest ranking kgb the soviet secret police and intelligence agency officer to defect to the united states said his expertise is soviet decision making and he is associated with think tanks in the united states where he works on analysis of soviet disinformation cam paigns he also consults for the u.s b&w photo by ligence he said i didn't have large audiences he added jokingly that a tendency to talk quietly is also a result of his former career levchenko was trained in military intelligence in the soviet union and graduated from moscow university with a degree in far east studies he described his education as a strange period of time upon entering the military service which is required of all soviet south the desire to link the main campus to the goodman cam pus was finally realized this decade with the acquisition of the mountaintop the once see expansion page 7 sion for lehigh came about shortly after the university's inception land scuth of the original campus around the area where taylor residen tial college stands today was bought to obtain a natural spring and thus establish and maintain water rights lehigh moved even farther up south mountain when the sayre family presented sayre park as a gift to the university it was not until the 1960s when lehigh finally crossed the mountain and established the murray goodman sports campus at the same time lehigh moved north toward bethlehem and added much of the present lower campus with the 500 acres from the goodman campus and the lehem steel corp the city was afraid lehigh would move north bethlehem steel would move south and soon the older neighborhoods of south bethlehem would be overrun to satisfy all concerned lehigh
