answers to the queries mr bowers sets forth army college quota to change with needs the number of soldiers as signed for training under the astp secretary of war henry l stimson recently stated will be changed from time to time so as to accord with the needs of the army and available manpower it is now being somewhat reduced but may later be increased or still further reduced as the needs of the military situation or military training make advisable the purpose behind a civilian college training program would be to maintain a continuous flow of technically and professionally trained men and women into es sential civilian war services var ious programs of this kind have been considered by the govern ment due to lack of dormitory space schools which advocate delayed rushing periods have freshman dormitories to house the new men undoubtedly this plan would improve the fraternity averages but that is beside the point when considering fraternity averages lehigh university is one of the very few colleges in this country which counts pledge averages into fra ternity averages this seems to be the principal reason why our fra ternity averages are so low why doesn't the administration correct this fallacy harold d sherwood ch.e.-'44 — it has been my experience that under normal conditions a fresh man in a fraternity gets more ob servation and time for studies than does one in a dormitory if rush ing were to be deferred for one or two semesters what would the university do for housing facili ties just five more days until the price of the epitome goes from 3 to 3.50 for seniors according to business manager robert l smith underclassmen have a few days of grace after february 1 be fore the shift in price about 50 copies of the epitome will be offered for sale to the ast which will receive 14 pages of space in the 1944 yearbook with only 500 copies of the yearbook or dered the business staff expects to close all sales by february 15 it is expected that approximate ly 100 rotc seniors will appear in the yearbook in the senior sec tion which will run six seniors on each page all students who buy epitomes and leave school before june will have their copies mailed to them students leaving the university within the next few weeks are urged to contact the mccaa stu dio and have their pictures taken before leaving the campus students wishing to subscribe to the epitome are urged to place their orders through the supply bureau the arcadia office or through the brown and white of fice senior pictures will be com pleted this week at mccaa's and cards will be sent out immediately for appointments with members of the 1945 and 1946 classes for pic tures m&c production proves great success judis stands out in rote of 9 by herbert brody an old man with a woolley white beard who for the most part sat in a wheel chair did more than compensate for his inactivity by entertaining three civilian audiences and one ast gathering in the mustard and cheese pro duction of the man who came to dinner heading the cast in the role of the gruff and vociferous man who came and stayed awhile — that of sheridan whiteside — was lowell judis bus oct 45 judis a vet eran in m and c productions treated the audience to many laughs with the not so subtle cracks that his part offered the play which had the char acteristics of a farce - comedy showed how a prominent radio broadcaster found himself stuck in a quiet american home as a re sult of a broken hip obtained on the outside doorstep not satisfied with proper medical care this em inent whiteside proceeded to blackmail the peaceful family break up the home and almost lowell judis . . . . . . stole the show such as this was certainly appre ciated by the audience in the small civic theatre civic club provides girls mustard and cheese was for tunate in securing the efforts of the feminine talent provided by the civic club without their help the play could not possibly have been a success for there were numerous feminine roles to fill according to al rights play direc tor pretty blond maureen torrell played the role of whiteside's secretary maggie cutler maggie an apparently efficient secretary was the one who was most ac quainted with the clever tricks of her boss miss torrell really turn ed in a fine job the minor parts in the show were important in unifying and strengthening the plot harriet stanley lorraine sheldon beverly carlton and banjo were some of these enacted by phillis kahler eve depaolis allen goodman and herman monaco respectively ruin the life of his own charming secretary a humorous situation vol li no 27 bethlehem pa wednesday jan 26 1944 price 5 cents 350 civilians will return lehigh's present undergraduate enrollment of 380 a figure which does not include graduating sen iors or men who have with drawn will drop to between 325 and 350 total registered civilians on the campus next semester ac cording to an estimate based on the questionnaires returned to dean congdon and a statement on the number of incoming freshmen by the admissions office approximately 75 per cent of the questionnaires concerning re enrollment next semester which were sent to every civilian student have been returned and of these 86 per cent signified that they planned to return next semester registrar curtis declined to make a statement on the approxi mate civilian enrollment for next semester at this time robert e laramy assistant di rector of admissions has an nounced that approximately 30 men will compose the entering freshman class 18 have definitely been accepted the june class however is expected to be larger speaking of averages ; deferred pledging not advocated by majority the recent question of whether or not deferred pledging on the part of lehigh's fraternities would increase scholastic averages has brought about many opinions both pro and con one point emphasized by the majority of opinions is that pledge averages should not count in fraternity averages deferred pledging until after the ffrst semester was definitely not advised a few of the opinions were john j shipherd bus 46 — due to conditions that now exist i feel that the individual more than ever determines the fraternity's aver age for many brothers are living in foreign houses and under strained conditions for study i do not feel that the rushing problem affects the average as much as the housing conditions of the univer sity today w robert moore i e.-'44 — i think it would be a good idea for the fraternities to withhold from rushing freshmen until after the first semester but the plan is practically impossible a t lehigh other plans are made for coming semester members of the past and future five-man arcadia meetings met monday night to discuss plans for the coming semester and to pre pare a budget of next semester's class expenses blame ferrell che-f44 presided in accordance with the recent arcadia plan defining classes as those groups that graduate within a calendar year the budgets of the classes of 1944 45 and 46 were considered provisions for the ex pense of a class plaque were made from the class treasury other items considered were a junior prom to be held in the spring and contributions to the epitome from the various class treasuries it was recommended that the junior prom be held but that the band be limited to a small band as opposed to the more expensive types the committees decided to contribute 200 to the epitome in order to help defray expenses of the book in estimating future balances the view was taken that the civ ilian student body next semester would consist of about 350-400 stu dents the committees felt that an election of new men to the five man committee should be held be fore the end of the next semester the committee performs all of the functions of the class officers and each member is a regular member of arcadia the five-man committee at pres ent consists of men who were elected in either june or may these men may serve for two sem esters and then must be reelected before they may serve again the system of a committee of students instead of the past class officers was devised last spring when the classification of the different class es became confused and difficult junior prom to be held this spring ast reservists may wear their rotc uniforms or if they pre fer civilian clothes formal or
