chairman and junior david hirschbcrg concert vice chairman volchko said 552 students voted in the election the first order of business is to get the group together with joanne fletcher volchko said september 15 1987 bethlehem pennsylvania 215 758-4181 administration forms broad policy on aids by eoin callan brown and white news writer in response to the growing fear of acquired immune deficiency syndrome aids lehigh plans to place an emphasis on education by having an aids symposium this week lehigh does not have an official policy toward aids but dean of students john smeaton said lehigh has developed an approach that will better prepare itself in the event of an outbreak on campus the main concern he said lies in education we're concerned that we're not immune to this disease we're going to see it and we must be prepared to prepare the campus the dean of students and the student health center have organized a symposium desig ned to be the first step in aids education two externally produced videotapes about aids will be shown health center medical director dr carl ruch campus psychologis ts and other faculty members will answer questions not only will the disease itself be discussed smeaton said but so will the value-related issues that are involved with promiscuity such as morality and self esteem aids is only a small piece of the problem smeaton said we must discuss the disease and how it is transmitted so that students can make intelligent choices we will do follow-ups to the symposium smeaton said but how soon and what type depend upon student respon se the first step he explained is to answer student's questions accurately and quickly and not to conduct a safe sex campaign condoms are available for sale in the bookstore and the health center he said but we have no plans to begin distributing them about campus the overall approach which was developed by the dean of students student affairs counseling and health center offices is to try and maintain a plan of action in a field where facts arc changing daily lchigh receives most of its information on aids from the american college health association but there are a great deal of questions that cannot be answered including what the administration should do if aids is seen on campus that's a dilemma the topic presents us with smeaton said if a student contracts aids we must try to maintain that student's confidentiality but at the same time the needs of the campus must be considered there are a 1,001 factors involved so it is difficult to have a broad-based policy that covers every situation by john mcausland brown and white news writer while optimistic about rush in general fraternity rush chairmen expressed dissatis faction with the scheduling of open houses this year normally open houses are set for the first three sundays after labor day however using that system the late date of labor day this year would have pushed open houses into october instead they were scheduled for aug 29 and 30 and sept 13-too early in the semester and too many in one weekend accord ing to rush chairmen freshmen were not yet ready to make decisions regarding fraternity life the chairmen feel since they had only arrived eight days before open houses began echoing the sentiment of many rush chairmen chi phi fraternity rush chairman bob bradley said freshmen aren't pre pared for rush because they aren't really sure what they want yet there was more concern about having two open-house days in one weekend hav ing to go to all the houses two days in a row is very exaust ing it's not fair to the fresh men or to the houses said pete dictz rush chairman of delta chi fraternity the houses don't get a fair show ing when people see house after house for hours on end it is also unfair to the fresh men said steve stroup pi kappa alpha fraternity rush affairs mike boyd reserved judgement on fraternity rush until later in the semester open houses aren't over yet so it would be difficult to make generalizations this early but he said the increase in size of the freshmen class is an encouraging sign for frater nities bradley said he was very pleased with this year's tur nout which totalled 340 fresh men marc litman sigma nu frat ernity rush chairman said his fraternity's open house attrac ted about 27o the same attend ance as last year but they were very cool pike had 88 men attend open house the quality of guys was good and they arc psyched on fraternities not ed stroup b&w photo by rick potts senior tom johnson greets freshman rushees sunday at theta chi fraternity chairman the schedule basically forced guys to pick a day because they couldn't go to both and still get their work done bradley agreed with dictz and stroup it didn't affect us because we were scheduled on saturday the first day but sunday less people must have gone out rush chairmen were pleas ed about attendance at open house and the quality of the men they met attributing the success to
