officially launched yesterday at a regular meeting of the lehigh university board of trustees the 10-year program to be divided into two phases will be known as the new century fund the first phase directed toward raising 30,000,000 of the goal to meet the most urgent needs harold s mohler president and chief executive officer of the hershey foods corp hershey pa will serve as national chairman of the nationwide campaign he is a trustee and alumnus of lehigh announcement of the chairman goal and name of the new fund-raising campaign was made by m.j rathbone president of lehigh's trustees and by w deming lewis president of the university rathbone also a lehigh alumnus is retired chairman of standard oil in new jersey he resides in summit n.j they said during the past three years lehigh trustees faculty alumni students and administrators have made a careful study of the university's needs for the immediate future all of these deliberations have been useful in assessing the new construction that must be completed within this period as well as the accumulation of funds for educational require ments the new century fund represents the greatest task yet undertaken by lehigh but the record of achievement in the harold s mohler artist's conception of planned new 6,000,000 athletic and convocation center one of the major projects of the 67,000,000 new century fund which was officially launched yesterday nixon is hopping on the band wagon says rooney of recent busing issue by david ingram " president nixon got off the bus and onto the bandwagon said congressman fred j rooney d-pa concerning nixon's recent statements re garding the busing issue rooney spoke on federal aid to education in the university center onmonday to open the 26th annual lehigh valley secondary school principles conference rooney discussed the busing issue the lehigh forum and the basic changes that have occurred in education in his 20-minute talk to the 87 lehigh valley educators i am opposed to long-distance busing to achieve racial balance stated rooney it creates more problems than it resolves when nixon made his statement regarding busing he proposed a 2.5 billion equal education opportunities act instead of the court ordered busing rooney claimed that it was no more than a re-naming of funds already going to education nixon's bill was to use the money from the 1.5-billion elementary and secondary education act already passed by congress and the 1 billion emergency assistance act now in committee said rooney in the past three years nixon has vetoed several education hills because of excessive spending said rooney now nixon wants to look good by spending more money on education rooney said that nixon has never asked for full funding to education and his new bill asks less than congress would approve when discussing innovations in education rooney praised the lehigh forum and commended the faculty for going along with the new trends in student-faculty relations he attended the forum meeting after his speech congratulated their work and noted that the attendance was better than on the senate floor debates rooney said that the pennsylvania schools have responded well to the need for greater sensitivity to individual needs and drug training he recommended that educators take similar steps to educate the students in the area of consumerism the secondary school principles conference was coordinated by dr charles w guditus director of the division of educational administration in the graduate school of education and charles schaffer principal of wilson boro high school with cooperation of the pennsylvania branch of the national association of secondary school principals the conference included three discussion work groups and lecture by dr benjamin litt of the management science department harold wilson at a labour party convention in 1964 for part one of a biography on the former prime minister see page 7 wilson cancellation unlikely says joynt dr carey b joynt chairman of the international relations department who is also responsible for coordinating the blaustein lecture series sees little chance of british opposition leade r harold wilson cancelling his addresses because of the recent resignations in his party i have no doubt myself that he will come said joynt it's the labor party split been in the offing for some time now he had already made his decisions about who to replace them with so it could not have come as too great a sur prise joynt said he has not been in contact with wilson since the upheaval six labor party leaders who favor british entry into the common market have resigned from the labor party si nee tuesday as prime minister wil son had unsuccessfully tried to negotiate britain's entry into that organization however wilson has opposed present prime minister edward heath's efforts to lead britain into the economic com munity wilson claims that during neg otiations heath compromised britain's interests to such an extent that it would make common market membership undesirable wilson's turnaround has been criticized by many as sheer politicking dissatis faction grew within his own party culminating in the resignations this week the british labor chief has already replaced the men who resigned monday and will probably find replacements for others who follow in short order joynt said that wilson's position is not in danger unless there is something we don't know behind the scenes joynt believes the resignations are merely a formalization of a rift apparent for months and are probably a precursor to the annual labor party conference this summer wilson's scheduled addresses are as follows april 19 britain and the transition from imperialism april 20 studies in international cooperation april 21 britain and the european common market all three lectures are scheduled for 8:30 in grace hall recent developments since the above story was written wilson has telegraphed the university and will keep all his lehigh commitments he has cancelled his scheduled april 19 address at muhlenberg however see 67 million page 5 applications due tomorrow saturday april 15 is the last day for filing applications for degrees to be conferred in june
