their 1944 yearbook and also their four dollar assessment last issue of 1943 five civilians three rotc men selected by senior honorary monday afternoon xmas service attracts 500 more than 500 guests attended the annual christmas vespers pre sented by the combined glee clubs of moravian college for women and lehigh university and ac companied by the lehigh and mo ravian symphony orchestras held in the packer memorial chapel sunday following the processional march by the singers president clement c williams welcomed the congregation dr claude g beardslee read the prophecies the story of christmas and the story of the wisemen from the bible between the different carols many traditionally popular carols were sung by the audience and the combined chorus while carols of other countries were sung by the chorus alone the orchestra and chorus were led by dr t edgar shields who arranged the program the chorus of 80 included several ast students and their tenor soloist basil beeken omicron delta kappa senior honor society initiated three sen iors and five second semester jun iors monday afternoon after the initiation the members of the so ciety held a banquet at the sun inn nineteen members including five members of the faculty were present the men were elected wednes day night and tapped at noon fri day at the flagpole five of the men elected are civilians and three are rotc men who have re turned to the campus to finish their education the men are f william bloecher jr e.m o'44 — president theta chi tau beta pi if council vice-president cyanide soccer and baseball brown and white is suspending publication until after the christmas holidays this issue is the last to appear until jan 5 1944 eight men admitted to odk honorary students express desire for continuance of grid sport curtis posts new calendar during the past few weeks there has been considerable controversy concerning the future of football at lehigh for the duration a poll conducted to determine the attitude of the student body in the matter has proved beyond a doubt that the students of lehigh stand solidly behind he continuance of football during the war years some of the opinions advanced are as follows michael j pappas bus june 44 — scholastic football should be continued in every university and college because of the physical and mental conditioning that it offers to its participants physic ally it develops the robust body of the athlete mentally it installs the cooperative attitude of a man our past season may have been unsuccessful but such results are of minute significance when con sideration is given to the circum stances under which a highly spirited and fully enthusiastic team took its place on the field each time george kocyan m j5 44 — football should be continued be cause it cements the school spirit and keeps them bound together in one body this school spirit must be kept alive for the future of le high hal sherwood ch.e feb 44 williams reveals student 2a status president clement c williams revealed monday that the signing of the bill to eliminate occupa tional deferments except manda tory types by president roosevelt makes the future of 2a defer ments become increasingly a ques tion to be determined by the needs of the army for men if sufficient manpower cannot be secured from other sources education defer ments will be eliminated how ever the selective service has made no announcement of policy on this subject the measure which voids occu pational deferments is designed to forestall the drafting of pre-pearl harbor fathers as long as possible and orders have been issued to local draft boards to fill their quotas from other sources if at all feasible the only mandatory oc cupational deferments called for by the selective service law are for limited classes it is my opinion that intercol legiate sports should be continued at lehigh even if only on a very limited scale what if the school doesn't receive any benefit in the way of publicity surely the par ticipants do in exercises physical development sportsmanship and the love of playing the sport al though we may be the losers aldo j pin chem june 45 — emphatically yes lehigh should continue to play football for the duration because if we don't it means that lehigh is giving up without a fight lehigh represents football that isn't commercialized football that is truly a sport not a job sanford w wilson ch e june 45 — it is my opinion that lehigh should continue intercollegiate football for in football a person has to learn to think in a split second and to take advantage of the slightest relaxation on the part of his opponent no one can get this instantaneous thinking from classwork then too the physical training received by each player is beneficial i taking place next to the original packard automobile in packard hall the men tap ped include albert a perley me oct 44 franklin rhodes dick castiello and pinckney corsa the latter three being returned rotc students at the meeting and smoker last thursday night in packard lounge the new men were chosen pro fessor fred v larkin spoke at the affair the annual banquet was set for january 13 according to william st clair me feb 44 head of the society pi tau sigma now includes 20 members they recently pur chased a 500 war bond pictured above are the eight men who were tapped to omicron delta kappa senior honor society the tapping took place friday noon at the flagpole left to right they are glenn murray bill hittinger bill bloecher paul f ranz leslie little louis domeratzky dave kirk and fritz
