brown and white vol 91 — no i bethlehem pa .. friday august 31 ifli 21mu-4im b&w photo by john henry sound off the rally was john steck steckbeck retired head of the intramurals office a class of 83 band member plays a marching tune at the freshman rally on tuesday night leading campus renovations cost 750,000 by linda pickens the university has spent more than 750,00 this summer on a variety of renovations and improvements throughout the campus see adjoining table with the exception of a few minor delays eric ottervik vice president for administration and planning called it the best year we've had yet for campus improvements gifts from private groups made possible the two most costly projects of the sum mer the renovation of packer memorial church and the wrestling room m taylor gym the philadelphia-based pew foundation donated 200,000 for the cleaning and waterproofing of the church while the lewis brothers robert 27 and alvin sr 29 gave 100,000 to convert the fencing room to a wrestling locker room and to renovate the existing wrestling room other large-scale renovations include the snack bar williams hall and paving the parking lot at the corner of brodhead and west packer avenue the parking tot should be available for use on sept 4 according to ottervik church renovations the renovation of packer memorial church is progressing m two phases : first the outside of the building has been sealed then the interior will be renovated in the first phase of renovations which began m the spring the stonework was chemically cleaned repainted and then sealed with two coats of siucone in ad . dition the red slate roof was cleaned and repaired according to tony corallo director of physical planning to restore the stained glass windows to their original grandeur the present protective green glass is being removed corallo said it will be replaced by clear protective glass which will eliminate the dingy effect inside the church corallo added - in addition corallo's staff is doing a feasibility study of installing a new audio system m phase two of the renovations if funds permit a new heating and ven ventilation system possibly to include air conditioning may follow corallo said snack bar snack bar renovations included knocking down the back wall to increase visual space and compensate for a wall now separating the counter from the minority counselor quits notes faculty indifference by jerry miller the low ratio of blacks and women to white men on the university faculty is a darn shame according to denese walters departing minority admissions counselor for the university i think if the university really wanted more mack professors they could find them walters said monday citing personal and academic reasons walters said she would be leaving the university effective yesterday she has accepted a job as minority admissions counselor at emory university m atlanta georgia where she noted she could also take law courses at the law school walters a 1976 graduate of the university hopes to eventually earn a law degree in addition she noted bethlehem is not a very good area for single black people i have been here seven years it is time to move on walters suggested the university pay compensatory figures to black faculty to move to bethlehem and work at the university you can get white faculty members to move to bethlehem but you can't get black faculty members to move to this area so you pay them more walters said this is permissable under existing health education and welfare guidelines as it contributes to affirmative action programs in addition walters said faculty resistance to changes m programs has hin dered minority programs as well as other innovations at the university although she said the overall quality and attitude of the faculty was excellent walters blamed a few faculty members for being overly defensive about their programs * sj»v ; it's about time the faculty got off their high horses and admitted that other people have good ideas she explained while praising the administration students and faculty for their overall lot soucer time fri bee player paal fax it experimeais wttfe tiae vlttnate pmttfas as ac la\wn aa hraa af ma^^ibm hall b hatta ta l^x f a » «■mw photai ay youngentob add-drop appeals to be restricted fee remains intact by peter schilling university students will continue to pay 10 to add or drop a course this semester and chances are it win be harder to have the fee waived by an adviser for the two following semesters however the fee will be impended university president deming lewis made the decision this summer to keep the fee intact for this semester following the recommendations of a seven member committee he set up to study student fees the board of trustees gave lewis control over the add-drop fee and all student fees at its april meeting me committee established five reasons for waiving the fee by an adviser and they are listed right on the add-drop slip they are scheduling conflict cancellation of a course or section of a course change of academic status change of major or field atielsibtieu failure exemption health reasons - no other reasons will be accepted for adding or dropping a course according to austin gavin executive assistant to the president and chairman of the committee we certainly hope and expect it will improve the uniformity of fee application or waiver he said this uniformity and the validity of having an add-drop fee at all are the two problems the committee will be studying see committee page if see campus page 17 see flexible page it inside phone fun >. 5 brodhead visit p 6 - x , twins star p£o
