on job market didn't get offers by eileen canzian forty percent of the university seniors who have tried to get full-time post graduate employment have received no job offers according to a poll conducted by the brown and white staff the brown and white conducted in terviews with 250 seniors selected at random according to robert thornton associate professor of economics who was consulted for the poll me can be about 95 percent sure that the forty percent figure falls within five percent of the actual percentage in the senior class of about 630 he said other questions would vary in accuracy but not by large percentages the polling was organized by sean handerhan 76 and the computer programming was conducted by alex lamar 78 the poll revealed that 72.8 percent of the seniors have tried to find full-time em ployment of which 40.1 percent have received no job offers 50 percent have received one to three job offers and 9.9 percent have received four or mere job offers of the 27.2 percent who have not tried to get a job 63.2 percent intend to go to graduate school 13.2 percent will try to get a job and 23.5 percent have other plans men have been more successful than women in seeking employment according to the poll of the male seniors who have tried to get a job 60.8 percent have received at least one job offer fifty percent of the women seniors who have tried to get a job have received one or more job offers the results of students graduating from the college of arts and science seem to point to me reason for the discrepancy of the 76.9 percent of women graduating from that college who have sought employment 70 percent have not received any job of fers only 38.9 percent of male seniors in the arts college have tried to get a job of which 52.4 percent have not received any job offers however women graduating from the college of business and economics seem more successful than their male coun terparts in seeking employment of the 57.1 percent of the women in that college who have sought employment 75 percent have received at least one job offer of the 83.9 percent of male seniors in the business college who have tried to get a job only 52 percent have charging the university for police and fire protection in the wake of last week's false alarms and rock-throwing incident in front of phi gamma delta fraternity although the committee has considered such action for several months last week's campus action is expected to be a deciding factor the committee was to meet last night at bethlehem city hall in another development the brown and white has learned that the university has in past years donated up to 500 to the firemen's pension fund university director of community relations james harper confirmed the donations and the amount however harper could not recall any donation being made since 1973 when 500 was donated harper said over the years the university has given monetary contributions to the firemen's pension fund bethlehem's deputy fire commissioner augustine sebastionelli who was fire chief until 1974 told the brown and white there were some donations made but i don't think they were annual donations and they were never solicited sebastionelli said he is not closely involved with the fund since it is not operated under department administration however he said speculation connecting possible cessation of university donations to mayor gordon mower last issue this is the last issue of the brown and white for the 1974-75 academic year publication will resume next fall on september 5 high estimates criticized in maintenance contracts by jeff bodenstab last in a series . a recent survey of department chairmen and fraternity house managers conducted by the brown and white resulted in a variety of opinions and responses about the department of buildings and grounds while some were very complimentary others complained of the service they received george kane chairman of the depart ment of industrial engineering wrote that buildings and grounds has been reasonably prompt and the workmanship good ralph lindgren chairman of the philosophy department wrote i have without exception received prompt and courteous attention to every request jeff scott 77 house manager of kappa sigma said that he found service reasonable and added that he was satisfied with work that had been done on his fraternity the department of buildings and grounds deals extensively with the members of the university community and is constantly in the public eye as a supervisor from the department who requested that his name be withheld from publication commented there is no way we can hide our mistakes almost everything we do is out in the open because few individuals fully un derstand the situation surrounding the work done by buildings and grounds in its entirety the department is a common target for unwarranted and short-sighted criticism many people who complain of buildings and grounds services are not aware of the difficulty of the job being done the supervisor commented we have to put up with too many petty com plaints added robert numbers director of buildings and grounds we get nothing but praise from someone who is conscious of what is going on a few of the numerous complaints that the brown and white received however appear to have a legitimate basis many of the complaints the brown and math teacher for 14 yrs given terminal contract by david arnesen after 14 years of teaching at the university gary laison assistant professor of mathematics has been denied tenure and given a terminal contract by the administration despite department recommendations to the contrary laison said it would be premature to comment further than to say he had been denied tenure albert zettlemoyer provost and vice president declined to comment on why laison had been denied tenure he said only that a terminal contract had been offered laison came to the university as an instructor in 1961 in 1970 he was appointed assistant professor after receiving a ph.d in mathematics from the university of pennsylvania in 1969 next year laison would have completed six of the seven required probationary years on which tenure is granted at the same time laison was appointed assistant professor the university for mally adopted rules for tenure and ap pointment according to ferdinand beer chairman of the department of mechanics and mechanical engineering and president of the local chapter of the american association of university professors aaup application of the rules were open to interpretation he said that the math department decided laison's probationary period of seven years would begin in 1970 laison then would be eligible for tenure next year his years as instructor did not count as time accrued 85 petitioners request club for gays by donna frabotta a petition signed by 85 students and faculty members requesting the creation of a homophile club at the university has been received by the dean of students office according to william quay dean of students the petition calls for university support but not recognition of a homophile group quay said he explained that petitioners did not specifically ask for recognition because they felt that it is implied by the word support whether or not a homophile group receives university funds is a separate matter he said adding that the university does recognize groups which do not receive financial support quay said he has not had the chance to act on the petitioners request (< i hope to have a definite decision at the very beginning of next semester he added i want to be open-minded get as many facts and consult with as many people as i can quay said he added there is not enough time left in the semester to seek out the ramifications of all this because there is so little time left in the semester organization would not be able to do very much anyway quay added that's why i'm aiming for september he explained one
