used as cover plates for airplane in strument dials two of lehigh's chemistry staff volunteered to look for the answer to the prob lem during the summer of 1942 drs neville and hazelhurst worked out formulas for a glass etching process which involves three sep arate steps in order to etch glass it must first be cleaned so as to insure uniform etching the first etching is done with a mixture of ammonium fluoride and hydro fluoric acid this is called the rough etch the second etch is done with hydrofluoric acid alone which smooths out the rough spots and gives a more uniform surface the process requires a very close control over the etching since the transparency of the glass may be come seriously impaired by too much etching the research men discovered that the company's difficulties with the process were caused by the cleaning of the glass and not much by the etching although most of the production of this glass is diverted to war use at the present there is some use
