brown and white bethlehem pa friday december 8 1078 2 1 vol *> oj council publicity chairman faces impeachment hearing by jim morrison james michener chosen to speak to senior class by lee ann lusardi pulitzer prize-winning author james michener will speak at commencement craig solomon senior class president announced monday we are one of the first universities m the country to announce a commencement speaker solomon said i am very pleased with the choice michener who lives m nearby piper sviiie won the pulitzer prize m 1948 for his tales of the south pacific he also is the author of hawaii centennial the source and the recently-released chesapeake solomon noted that michener was on a list of candidates compiled last spring after a survey of the senior class seme seniors have voiced discontent with the speaker selection process see letter p 4 every year there is a con flict solomon said every year the seniors make a list and their fin choice ultimately is not chosen the speaker comes from a watered-down list which has been worked out through compromise with the administration woody allen the first choice of the class was not asked to speak because university president deming lewis who ultimately choses the speakers found him unac ceptable the administration does not give the senior class specific criteria for a speaker solomon explained this haziness is a matter of misunderstanding between students and administration which is perpetuated every year he said rh-1 2 to be spring lottery option ry jim donahue rh-12 will be included m next spring's residence hall lottery preston parr vice president for student affairs said at wednesday's forum meeting james pouiin president of the residence halls council rhc told the forum during the courtesy of the floor that the rhc believes the building will not be ready m time for the beginning of school next fail he asked the administration to make a contingency plan m case the building is unfinished he also called on the administration to tell students who choose rh-12 during room selection what those contingency plans are parr replying to poulin's remarks said the administration is making up alternate housing plans but the administration and the contractor believe the building will be finished by august he noted that the alternative plans will not be prepared before the lottery next semester pouiin said the rhc might recommend to students not to choose rh-12 h the lottery if the administration does not have a contingency housing plan parr said the university will continue to use polk gardens bishopthorpe and warren square for student housing in regular forum business the forum censured two students mike silverman vice-chairman said the forum previously sent out letters to six students who have not attended any forum meetings they were asked to respond to the letters by last friday four of the students responded by resigning and three others by defending their positions before the steering com mittee the steering committee was satisfied with all three students and decided not to move against them he stated the remaining two students ronald ner sesian 81 and cary nemovicker a graduate student did not respond to the letter so the steering committee recommended that they be censured a bylaw change that facilitates the filling of vacancies on the forum was adopted the change states that if more than 12 student or faculty seats are vacant they will be filled by a special election if 12 or less seats are vacant the student caucus will fill student vacancies and the faculty caucus will fill faculty vacancies a motion that directs the academic environment committee to prepare a new motion on the add-drop fee was passed the new motion would incorporate wor ding changes m priorities rules and regulations pr&r that the board of trustees will have to make to eliminate the fee last month the forum passed a resolution abolishing the acid-drop fee preston parr spriggs granted leave of absence starting january richard spriggs vice president for administration has been granted a one year leave of absence effective jan 1 university president deming lewis an nounced monday spriggs will join the staff of the national materials advisory board of the national academy of sciences as a visiting senior staff associate vice president for planning and ad ministrative services eric ottervik will assume responsibility for campus police formerly under spriggs jurisdiction ottervik also will become equal op portunity officer for the support and professional staffs and for the han dicapped spriggs other staff responsibilities will be transferred to various vice presidents lewis said lewis added he is not sure who will assume the title of vice president for ad ministration we haven't worked out the details so i can't be very definite about it he said a replacement for spriggs office might be sought he said or someone could assume a title such as vice president for staff and administration spriggs said he is thrilled with the move it gives me a chance to renew my scholarship he said spriggs has worked at the university for 14 years shattered a resolution to impeach student ac tivities council sac publicity chairman jay yanavok was passed 11-1 at wed nesday's council meeting the resolution proposed by council vice president john nersesian means that a special meeting of the council will be held sunday at 10 p.m in university center room 210 at the meeting a hearing will be held on the matter if eight members of the council excluding yanavok vote for removal it passes no charges were made at wednesday's meeting however sac president rob rosenthal said wednesday that yanavok will be told about the charges and will have at least 48 hours to make a defense rosenthal would not comment specifically on the charges however he did say the charges stem from the fact that yanavok has got no one's trust and confidence on the council and has been a detriment also rosenthal said he felt yanavok had done a poor job as publicity chairman yanavok said he felt personally it impeachment is a direct result of the dec 5 brown and white article rosenthal and nersesian both claimed the impeachment proceedings were not entirely a result of yanavok's recent charges about sac payments to swank films inc no this wasn't a direct result of the article what it the story was was the last straw that did it < impeachment had been considered for a much longer period of time rosenthal said rosenthal was the only council member to vote against the resolution while yanavok voted for it rosenthal said he dissented because if rosenthal voted no people would not feel it was a grudge or personal matter yanavok said he voted for the resolution because he welcomed the hearing to prove my innocence there was no discussion of dissension about the resolution prior to the vote according to article x section two of the sac constitution a member of the student activities council other than the president may be removed from office by a vote of eight of 11 members excluding b4vw photo by klein the campus continued to look like a president deming lewis who ultimately choses the speakers found him unac ceptable the administration does not give the senior class specific criteria for a speaker solomon explained this haziness is a matter of misunderstanding between students and administration which is perpetuated every year he said rh-1 2 to be spring lottery option ry jim donahue rh-12 will be included m next spring's residence hall lottery preston parr vice president for student affairs said at wednesday's forum meeting james pouiin president of the residence halls council rhc told the forum during the courtesy of the floor that the rhc believes the building will not be ready m time for the beginning of school next fail he asked the administration to make a contingency plan m case the building is unfinished he students who have not attended any forum meetings they were asked to respond to the letters by last friday four of the students responded by resigning and three others by defending their positions
