six-credit foreign language require ment for all liberal arts students was part of a preliminary proposal to the faculty by the arts and sciences policy committee last semester the proposal which will not affect anyone graduating before 1984 is still being studied by the policy committee a foreign language subcommittee is con sidering the feasibility of the foreign language requirement of all the revisions the policy committee is considering such as a required western civilization course and a math requirement the language requirement has stimulated the most controversy according to j donald ryan professor of geoiogy and language subcommittee chairman the subcommittee has not begun formulating their proposal yet however ryan said he was very strongly in favor of a language requirement the international image of americans as illiterate in languages is widespread and unfortunate ryan said he ex plained that oil was discovered in equador while he was teaching there engineers from the united states and several other nations worked on the project for three years ryan said unfortunately only the americans never learned to speak any other language it is important that we have americans who can handle a foreign language i think the world laughs at americans in that respect and rightly so albert wilansky professor of mathematics and chairman of the policy committee said people who don't have a foreign language have lost a dimension he added a person who claims to be educated in the liberal arts ought to know a foreign language commented joseph mc fadden professor of journalism and a member of the language requirement sub committee real life is interdisciplinary being a well-rounded person requires a certain sympathy for all areas according to david lewis chairman of the modern foreign language department liberal arts majors with breadth in their education plus specialization are the most likely to survive the higher you go up the pyramid the more breadth you need lewis continued from the practical standpoint lewis said studying a language gives students the basic skills to go on learning after they've left college he added that studying a foreign language gives students a new approach to their own language speaking from her experience as an english teacher jan fergus assistant warren square variance may be decided march 28 by linda pickens a decision on the university's ap plication for a permanent zoning variance for warren square was postponed at wednesday's meeting of the bethlehem zoning hearing board city solicitor joseph leeson asked the university to address specific conditions that must be met in order to grant a special exception to the city's zoning code attorney robert holland legal counsel for the university must prove in a brief that warren square housing meets six conditions before the permanent zoning variance from residential to in stitutional — can be approved these conditions include the suitability of the property for dormitory use for extension of public utilities and the effects on traffic and safety in the area more testimony on warren square will be accepted at next month's march 28 meeting of the board and a decision will probably come at that time under city law the board must decide on the matter within 45 days of wednesday's hearing which is april 14 according to steven chanitz zoning officer instead of granting a permanent variance the board can grant another temporary variance chanitz said it's also very possible to deny as well as grant it the board's position is that they're also interested in the complaints of the neigh bors chanitz added although a temporary variance would probably suffice i'd like to see the whole situation cleared up said anthony corallo director of physical planning corallo prepared the appeal for the per manent variance for the university testimony both university administrators and residents who were not notified of the meeting by the city until monday testified at wednesday's meeting three spoke out against the permanent variance while holland presented the case for the university in the appeal corallo cited he university's improvements in the warren square area including new sidewalks and curbing correction of a drainage problem that affects a neighbor ( at a cost of 4,500 , and the installation of two parking lots providing 22 additional spaces 7 of which are reserved for neighbors at a cost of over 20,000 janet gebec of 224-226 warren square testified that many things have to be done to the parking lots let's have them finished first
